China’s Military is Broken! We Have Nothing to Worry About!

  • 0:00 - 0:03
There’s a new Pentagon report about
    China’s military.
  • 0:03 - 0:04
    And it’s pretty bad.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
Welcome to China Uncensored. I’m Chris Chappell.

  • 0:24 - 0:26
And now, on with the show.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
China’s military is a rapidly growing menace.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
Not even the chill guy can stay
chill when it comes to China.
  • 0:33 - 0:37
Last month, the Pentagon released its
    latest China Military Power Report,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
and it does not paint a pretty picture.
  • 0:39 - 0:44
The Chinese Communist Party has been making
huge strides in building up its arsenal.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
There’s a lot of alarming things in this
    report,
  • 0:45 - 0:50
but I want to focus on what is clearly the most important to Xi Jinping
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    The PLA Rocket Force.
  • 0:52 - 0:57
Yes, they’re so cartoonishly evil they
actually have their own Team Rocket.
  • 0:57 - 1:03
    Between 2023 and 2024, there’s been a big
build up of missiles and missile launchers,
  • 1:03 - 1:06
from short range all the way up to ICBMs.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
Sure, China’s economy is going down
and Chinese people can’t find work,
  • 1:10 - 1:13
but at least they’ve got a lot more missiles now.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
    The spike in medium-range ballistic
    missiles is especially concerning.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
    This is a thirty percent
    increase in just one year.
  • 1:21 - 1:26
To give you perspective, the Center for a
New American Security estimated back in 2017
  • 1:26 - 1:31
that China had the capability to strike
    every US base in Japan—
  • 1:31 - 1:34
cratering runways, hitting ships in port,
  • 1:34 - 1:38
    and destroying
command centers and aircraft on the ground.
  • 1:38 - 1:45
And in 2017, China had just 200 to
    300 medium range ballistic missiles.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
Things are a lot worse now.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    This build up happened fast.
  • 1:49 - 1:53
Just 2 years ago, the Pentagon
    reported that there were only
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    around 500-plus medium-range ballistic missiles.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
Which means they’ve more than doubled
their arsenal in just two years.
  • 2:00 - 2:05
Why is the PLA Rocket Force rapidly
    building up its missile arsenal?
  • 2:08 - 2:09
Well, let me throw this on
    top.
  • 2:09 - 2:13
The PLA Rocket Force also oversees China’s nuclear arsenal.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
And they’ve been building that up too.
  • 2:16 - 2:23
By mid-2024, China already had more
    than 600 operational nuclear warheads.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    Last year it was 500.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
While the US tries to reduce
    its nuclear arsenal,
  • 2:28 - 2:31
China built 100 in a year.
  • 2:31 - 2:37
At this rate, China will likely have more
than 1,000 operational warheads by 2030,
  • 2:37 - 2:43
most of which will be fielded on systems
capable of striking the US mainland.
  • 2:43 - 2:47
Remember, we’re only about 5 years away
    from 2030.
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    Feeling old yet?
  • 2:48 - 2:53
Actually, this news makes me feel less “old”
and more “I’m too young to die!”
  • 2:53 - 2:55
This is assuming the rate stays constant.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    It’ll actually probably be more.
  • 2:58 - 3:04
Because the CCP is also ramping up its
    ability to make nuclear weapons.
  • 3:04 - 3:08
The Pentagon report notes that China has
    “probably” completed constructing
  • 3:08 - 3:12
one of its two fast breeder nuclear reactors
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    to
    produce plutonium for nuclear weapons.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    But guess what?
  • 3:16 - 3:20
According to Pavel Podvig at the
    Russian Nuclear Forces Project,
  • 3:20 - 3:25
    that reactor has already
    been operational since 2023.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    However, there’s something very
    strange about this Pentagon report.
  • 3:28 - 3:32
Clearly China has been able to
    rapidly increase the size
  • 3:32 - 3:36
and sophistication of its missile and
nuclear arsenal in a short time.
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    But the Pentagon basically says,
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    nawww, don’t worry about it.
  • 3:41 - 3:44
Because this report has a new section called
    special topics.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    The first one is corruption.
  • 3:46 - 3:50
I should be celebrating that the US is talking
    more about CCP corruption,
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    but this isn’t it.
  • 3:52 - 3:56
The report makes it clear China’s
    military is plagued by corruption
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    Including the Rocket Force.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
Looks like Team Rocket is blasting off again.
  • 4:00 - 4:05
The report also talks about how the
    Chinese defense industry lacks competition
  • 4:05 - 4:09
    and has "little incentive to
    improve efficiency or reduce costs"
  • 4:09 - 4:12
The report also mentions how the PLA's
    dependence
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    on foreign technologies and components
  • 4:14 - 4:17
    likely increases
    long-term production costs.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
But China is not alone in that
    regard.
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    As far as I’m aware,
  • 4:20 - 4:25
the US still heavily relies on China
    for military component materials.
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    Even materials for ammo.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
The impression you get from reading
    the Pentagon report
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    is that China’s military
  • 4:31 - 4:34
    is so plagued by inefficiency
    and corruption
  • 4:34 - 4:40
that it can’t and won’t do something like a military invasion of Taiwan.
  • 4:40 - 4:41
But if that were really the case,
  • 4:41 - 4:47
    then how do you
explain how quickly it developed and expanded?
  • 4:47 - 4:52
Captain James Fanell , the former Director
    of Intelligence and Information Operations
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    for the US Pacific Fleet
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    and friend of
    China Uncensored,
  • 4:55 - 4:58
warns that this way of seeing Chinese corruption
  • 4:58 - 5:02
    feeds into what
he calls a “threat deflation mentality”.
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    Basically, thinking that China
isn’t that big of a threat.
  • 5:04 - 5:07
Like that new mole you’ve got.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    I’m sure
it’ll be fine to just ignore it.
  • 5:10 - 5:13
According to Fanell, the US has been
    plagued
  • 5:13 - 5:15
    with threat deflation for decades.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
It’s because of threat deflation that the US
  • 5:17 - 5:21
hasn’t taken the necessary steps to counter China.
  • 5:21 - 5:23
Instead, it has allowed China’s military
  • 5:23 - 5:26
    to
    grow at an alarming rate,
  • 5:26 - 5:29
as seen in these infographics of Chinese capabilities
  • 5:29 - 5:33
    between
2000 and 2022 that Captain Fanell made.
  • 5:33 - 5:37
The US is playing a major game of
catch-up when it comes to China,
  • 5:37 - 5:39
and it’s still not doing as much as it should.
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    As Captain Fanell points out,
  • 5:41 - 5:42
    China’s leaders, like Xi Jinping,
  • 5:42 - 5:46
use corruption as a tool to purge enemies
  • 5:46 - 5:48
and bend the military to their will.
  • 5:48 - 5:53
    Corruption in China under the
CCP is a feature, not a bug.
  • 5:53 - 5:56
In fact, corruption can feed into
    Chinese aggression
  • 5:56 - 6:00
and make China even more dangerous and determined, not less.
  • 6:00 - 6:04
"The issue is not how 'corruption'
    impacts military effectiveness
  • 6:04 - 6:07
but whether it will have a critical impact
    on war
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    and Xi’s decision-making."
  • 6:09 - 6:12
The last thing we need is for
    people to conclude that corruption
  • 6:12 - 6:16
can somehow magically stop the CCP in its tracks.
  • 6:16 - 6:19
US Naval War College professor Andrew Erickson
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    likewise warns against getting complacent,
  • 6:21 - 6:27
pointing out that some of Xi’s reforms have
enabled China to be a much more lethal force.
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    According to him, “[N]othing
    revealed in the report
  • 6:29 - 6:36
suggests problems sufficient to frustrate Xi’s
    pursuit of his top-priority target:
  • 6:36 - 6:41
    military modernization to help assert
control over Taiwan first and foremost”
  • 6:41 - 6:46
China is in the midst of the most dramatic
military buildup we’ve seen since World War II.
  • 6:46 - 6:49
It’s about time the US and likeminded countries
  • 6:49 - 6:53
react accordingly and stop acting like The Chill Guy.
  • 6:53 - 6:56
This free episode would not have
