Sunil Grover on his return to TV, clean comedy and cameo in Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha with Ajay Devgn

Ajay Devgan was of course there in the

film, Kajol was also there in that film

so, they had come for a shoot at

Chandigarh and I used to study at

Chandigarh college and did theatre over

there; over a period of time the thing

I understood that it's an amazing task

to make people laugh and if you have the

ability and you can do it, then do it for

surely. Many a times I stay cool too,

it might be feeling that every time I do

that I mumble, it's sometimes even that

I am calm. By God's grace, I have started

working, I feel normal everything is

normal-laughter is the best medicine

welcome to you also- Mr. Sunil, you have

been in this industry for a really really

long time and you have done

-not this much-you have -just a few time

-haha-long time was of Raj Kapoor sir

or Prithvi Raj sir's, y'all added 2 reels

-yes-count only one reel-okay

-will remove one reel but for even that

few span of time you have really performed

each type of character-yes-say it comedy

small roles in the movies, TV shows-

-correct-I just heard you were saying you

even dubbed over a voice actor so, how do

you see your growth as an individual, as

an artist over this period of time

-mine is like who first walking on foot

then by sitting on bullock-cart, by

hanging behind someone's tractor

then by sitting with 3 of them in truck

via bus, umm train, airport airplane;

all these journey, I've done!-[laughs]

-one or two things might be missed in

between so, I've experienced things for

some time, different different things

I really enjoyed, I'm grateful that I

got a chance to experience all of these

and my choice also stays this only

and this is a bit, many of the decisions

from this are intentional too because

my bend towards experience, towards

experiencing different mediums; has been

a lot!- "united Kachhe", this title when

you heard it for the first time, what was

the first thing that came into your mind

-the thing which I liked-hmm-I didn't

accept the show due to the title, I liked

that Kacche means illegal elements and

this concept in which it was like

I want to do a Sit-Com whose concept is

like this and in one house, some people

stay and life around them, the vicinity

will be shown like this-hmm-so, it was

very sweet and felt that; as far as I know

setting up of such type of Sit-Com in

London is good thing and Big thing-hmm

-so, I said that yes, I'll do! on hearing

that, I felt pretty good, so, I did it.

because such type of attempt has never

been happened-correct! So, if we speak

about your actor, we saw trailer, teaser

it's very interesting so, in real life, is

there any of your resemblance with

that character?-Like, Tango's character

in it, he is from Panjab and I'm also

Punjabi and my house where we used to

stay on Haryana, Punjab,Rajasthan's

border, so, I've seen many of such

type of people who have a dream of going

abroad; now also I see it so, there are

many relatable things that we want to go

out and many of them have dream who have

kept the land on lease and went abroad

many of them sell it and go abroad

so, I have seen this type of people

I can relate to this, and one thing that

our aspirations, each human has it that

I go to some new place or by doing

some new work, I get in it and create a

destination, settle over here, it's there

in each profession, at each place, this

emotion is there-umm you had done a

role in Pyar toh Hona Hi Tha-yes, it was

my first film-it was you first film!-hmm

-so, now, in parties and with all the

stars, now, you are also a star, when you

meet all did you discuss about this with

Mr. Ajay that you know I was there in

Houseful-yes yes!-how was his reaction,

what was the..?-do you know that Anees

Bazmee sir was director in that and

Rohit Shetty was Associate director in

that and so, of course Ajay Devgan was

there in that film so, Kajol was also

there in that film. So, they came

Chandigarh for shooting and I used to

study at Chandigarh college and did

theatre over there, I was popular

so, a local actor was needed so I was

called over there by the coordinator

did this role, felt very nice, just before

few time, I met Ajay Devgan sir so,

he discussed this [Mimics Ajay Devgan]

of course he knows-you had done some time

before, Gutter Gu which is a silent

comedy show-yes yes-and your last show

on Television was Kanpur Waale Khuranas

-yes-Since then, how has comedy as a genre

evolved and how have you personally

benefitted from it?-I don't know about

evolvement, I know a bit much..

I, as per myself modify and do it

so, when you know that you have

understood, that's the time when you

have forgotten, you have not understood

anything! so, just keep doing it, I feel;

like whatever you understand

Keep doing which you thing is right

and when you yourself feel like

laughing, firstly, definitely do it

if people laugh, it feels even more better

so, over a period of time, I've understood

that it's a very great job to make people

laugh and if you have the ability and you

can do it then definitely do it because

this is a very enjoying job because

people want is people forgetting sadness

pain and smiling then why should you not

do it if you can- definitely! on your

Instagram too, all your posts are

hilarious, all are funny memes, usually,

celebrities us it for their film

promotion for this or for that, but

yours in general, whichever post it is,

it's all related to comedy only so, that

is intentional or you are just like that

as a person- Maybe, I'm like this only

I like it and I feel if someone has come

on the page, if any post is there due to

which a slight smile comes on her face

and I don't take so much effort, time

on it-hmm-so, I just put it, but I wish

I become more active, I'm less active

maybe!-hmm-every person derives

inspiration from some place or some

incident or anything as a comic artist,

where do you look for more source of

inspiration for your content?-In our

surroundings only, people, things are

there and if you make them relatable,

so, it's more nice that if it's more

relatable then people will understand and

laugh on it so, the listeners and watchers

and you, both can relate to that so, then

eventually, it becomes comedy maybe!

your surrounding area, talks happen.

-we know you as a star, we know you as a

person who has been seen on the television

but off screen, how is Sunil Grover as a

person with his family, with his friends

how is he?-I am useful for picking up

everyone's bag umm if they say to pass it,

I just pass it, pick up that, then I pick

it up so, I like to host for people or to

do something for people whom I love,

so, I am telling it because I am the same

as I started or before that in childhood

More or less, I am like that and most of

the time I stay calm it might feel,

every time I am bouncing, it's not

like that, many a times, I am very calm

too-I wanted to ask that only that you

have calm nature also!-Mood keeps on

fluctuating that some day a lot bouncing

happens, so, when I go out for roaming

around then I become a very different

person-hmm- I really like travelling

going to different places-hmm-and visiting

and exploring new places. At that point,

mine every thing changes, on thinking that

I become happy. I like to spend time at

home, with family too-You have worked

on Television, OTT and you also have done

films, as an artist, through which medium

do you get to explore yourself more?

-when I used to do theatre, drama umm

so in that one thing is like you get

instant result, you performed people

in front like it, either applauses either

silence either talks so, you get to know

it accurately whether if you are right or

wrong and instant ratification you get in

a second. In TV it takes 1 or 2 weeks,,

in films, it takes 6 months, 1year,

2 years-hmm-in OTT too it takes this much

time. different different mediums has

different different things, in radio when

I used to do, it's I used to know after

a few while; there is one more medium,

Social Media, where you put something

you get instant results from people

-if you post any post on Instagram, do

you keep checking again and again that

how many views are there, what's the

engagement with it or you just let it be

after posting it!-no, sometimes I do

check and I tried in between that I

understand many a times when you post

something then people see it, when you

post, sometimes people don't see

how much is coming! and I don't bother

that much, post it and you just get aside

it's their own technology, how much we

will put where we will put and the

purpose is... at that should be because

the more you get inside it, you will get

much more inside-hmm-my main medium

is this where I am part of Story telling

in a long format and I enjoy it so, better

I just put some things for fun, then it's

put! and my obligation can't be there

I'm so hardworking and there is not so

much capability in me that I deliver I

work on 4 5 mediums, I want to do that

for fun or for sharing something, I want

to take this as a work so, it's a long

format and I really enjoy it!-talking

about comedy, it has many extensions to it

the genre itself has a lot of umm

sub-sections to it so, which kind of

comedy do you like? like Satire, clean

comedy, dark humor-in which we can laugh

it's good! initially, that's the first

requirement, rest, we try that do such

things which can be watched with family

in comedy because there are few

subjects where you get different

certificates for various reasons but I

prefer that, my effort is so that if you

are watching it with family then that

family also gets a chance to spend time

together-hmm-and it's a beautiful thing

recently, I had gone to perform live show

so there 80-90 years old senior citizens

had also come along with 5-6 years

children there were 8 years children too

so, I was becoming a lot happy that

grandpa, grandma, their children then

their children, 3 generations have come to

watch the show together and they are

enjoying, the show which they are watching

it's a one thing, along with they too get

a chance to spend time with one another

today, so many of them are busy

so, it becomes a reason that all can

sit together, it feels really nice

-anything else that you are going to come

up on television right now? like we have

a list of things, your upcoming movie

Jawaan and then Sunflower-yes-

anything on television-television is a

very big medium and I like it a lot

and I'm everything due to television

and there, I've a wish to do something

if something knew comes then definitely

I will do-it has been almost a year, I

think more than a year and a month

since you suffered heart attack which is

very very shocking for everyone of us and

you dealt with it, what are the changes

that you have made into your lifestyle

after that and how has perspective holds

life change after that?-that was one

incident, I had caught COVID and I was

suffering from COVID during which this

happened so, I was told that due to

this reason, at many places this cloth

occurs and happens like this so, I tried

understanding the things but till I

understood that, my surgery was done and

slowly slowly...that thing that comes

to you, I took it like that only now it

has come you can't ignore it and can't

do anything but the only way is bringing

some discipline in lifestyle, do few

slight changes and before also, I was

very discipline, it was somewhat

here-there, still a little bit too but

effort should be like stay happy,

enjoy and do your work nicely

It's by God's Grace that I have started

working again, I feel normal, everything

is normal and I feel good about it,

exercise has started, work has started

now, I don't even know what had happened
