xf0744 finding copyright cleared images using google

  • 0:02 - 0:04
Let’s start off by opening Google Images
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    at images.google.com
  • 0:08 - 0:10
Enter your search terms in the search bar,
  • 0:10 - 0:12
just as you would when searching
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    for written information.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
I am going to use the search terms
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    flamingos sunset and dusk.
  • 0:20 - 0:21
And then I’m going to click on
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    Google Search.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
Once my search has loaded, I'm now going
  • 0:29 - 0:31
click on the Tools button, which appears
  • 0:31 - 0:34
as one of the options underneath the
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    search bar.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
This now reveals various options for
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    filtering your search. Including
  • 0:40 - 0:45
by size, colour, time, and usage rights.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
We're going to look at the option, usage rights.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
When I click on the usage rights link
  • 0:53 - 0:55
a drop-down box appears which gives me the
  • 0:55 - 0:58
option of limiting my search by licence type.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
I am going to limit my search to images
  • 1:01 - 1:04
covered by the Creative Commons licences.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
Once I have chosen an image I simply click
  • 1:10 - 1:12
on it to select it, and it now appears
  • 1:12 - 1:14
towards the right of the screen.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
And then I click on the Visit button to
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    access the image.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
Even with images that have been labelled
  • 1:22 - 1:24
as Creative Commons with Google it's
  • 1:24 - 1:26
really important that you check the
  • 1:26 - 1:28
usage rights before using an image.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
This image states that it is under a
  • 1:33 - 1:36
Creative Commons CC0 licence, which allows
  • 1:36 - 1:39
free use or modification of images for any
  • 1:39 - 1:43
purpose, and no attribution is required.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
Even though the licence states that no
  • 1:48 - 1:51
attribution is legally required it is still
  • 1:51 - 1:53
good academic practice to include the
  • 1:53 - 1:55
source information in your academic work.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
I'd recommend therefore that you make a
  • 1:58 - 1:59
note of all the information that you would
  • 1:59 - 2:01
need to create a reference for an image
  • 2:01 - 2:03
when you download it from the internet.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
In this instance I'm going to record the
  • 2:07 - 2:09
creators name, which appears on the
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    right-hand side of the screen.
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    Mohamed Hassan
  • 2:13 - 2:15
I'm also going to record the publication
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    date, which is 2018.
  • 2:19 - 2:20
I'm also going to make a record of the URL
  • 2:20 - 2:23
for this page, and it would also be useful
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    to record the date that
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    I accessed the image.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
I'm now ready to download the image by
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    clicking on the download button.
