This presentation highlights the importance and relevance of studying quantum phenomena in biological systems. Classical Biology, a natural science, is the study of living organisms, which covers many specialized fields like physiology, anatomy, morphology, while broadly dealing with study of plants (Botany) and study of animals (Zoology). Quantum biology is the study of how the principles of quantum mechanics (the physics that governs the behavior of atoms and subatomic particles) play a role in biological processes. Quantum Biology illustrates how the concepts of Physics, Chemistry and Biology are relevant to the understanding of life's molecular processes, like photosynthesis, enzyme catalysis, and even our sense of smell. Migration of animals (marine or avian) had been a mystery for a long time. Scientists now have evidence that it may involve quantum effects allowing migratory birds, like the European Robin, to sense (hear and see) Earth's magnetic field! As more and more research is being carried out, our understanding about fields like biotechnology, nanotechnology and even quantum computing itself is becoming clear. This presentation on Quantum Biology would focus on exploring the potential of this field to our understanding of natural world and the interplay between quantum mechanics and biological systems, which can help reshaping industries like energy, medicine and computing.
