December 12 - But I Don’t Speak Albanian

  • 0:07 - 0:09
    Leilani took a year
    from studying at her university
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    to become a student missionary.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
She knew she wanted to serve overseas
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    but didn’t know
where God wanted her to go.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
I was just looking for a position
    I could teach English
  • 0:19 - 0:21
in a country that I had never heard of.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    So I prayed to God,
asked him to give me a place
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    I had never been to.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    Now I’m here, and it’s
the best decision I’ve ever made.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
Leilani was nervous when her plane
    touched down in Albania.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
But now, just one month later,
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    she’s discovering
    both the joys and challenges
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    of being an Adventist Volunteer.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    She’s volunteering at this kindergarten,
  • 0:43 - 0:46
which is run by the humanitarian
    organization ADRA Albania
  • 0:46 - 0:48
in cooperation with local church leaders.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
The school was started with the belief
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    that investing
    in the community’s education
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    will create happy,
    healthy children and families,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    contributing to a stronger society.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    I’m the kindergarten ESL teacher.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
    I teach three classes,
and all of them are in English.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
Her classroom is bursting with energy
  • 1:20 - 1:22
as the kids engage in fun activities.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    Being a volunteer
is not always simple or easy.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    Leilani has had to adapt
to a new language and culture.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    When she arrived,
    she couldn’t speak Albanian.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    And then I come here
    and I don’t understand anything,
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    and everybody’s translating for me.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
Another challenge is being so far
    from her family and friends
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    in the United States.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    But the loneliest times
have only reinforced her trust in God.
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    My spiritual life
    has definitely become stronger
  • 1:59 - 2:01
just being here for a month.
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    I didn’t even expect it.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
God is there every single day.
  • 2:06 - 2:10
    I came here,
and my first day here I was like,
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    "What am I doing here?"
  • 2:13 - 2:19
    But through this whole process
    you can see God.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
And so just being here I’m like,
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    "Whoa, You do have me,
You do take care of me."
  • 2:23 - 2:26
It just shocked me. It’s pretty cool.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
It’s actually really cool to know
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    somebody’s watching out for you.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    Please pray
    for Adventist Volunteers like Leilani,
  • 2:33 - 2:36
who have accepted God’s call to serve.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    You too can visit AdventistVolunteers.org
  • 2:39 - 2:42
to see a list of current
    volunteer opportunities.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    Thank you for supporting
    the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s work
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    around the world!
