December 12 - But I Don’t Speak Albanian
-
0:07 - 0:09Leilani took a year
from studying at her university -
0:09 - 0:11to become a student missionary.
-
0:11 - 0:13She knew she wanted to serve overseas
-
0:13 - 0:16but didn’t know
where God wanted her to go. -
0:16 - 0:19I was just looking for a position
I could teach English -
0:19 - 0:21in a country that I had never heard of.
-
0:21 - 0:24So I prayed to God,
asked him to give me a place -
0:24 - 0:25I had never been to.
-
0:25 - 0:28Now I’m here, and it’s
the best decision I’ve ever made. -
0:30 - 0:33Leilani was nervous when her plane
touched down in Albania. -
0:33 - 0:35But now, just one month later,
-
0:35 - 0:38she’s discovering
both the joys and challenges -
0:38 - 0:40of being an Adventist Volunteer.
-
0:40 - 0:43She’s volunteering at this kindergarten,
-
0:43 - 0:46which is run by the humanitarian
organization ADRA Albania -
0:46 - 0:48in cooperation with local church leaders.
-
0:48 - 0:50The school was started with the belief
-
0:50 - 0:52that investing
in the community’s education -
0:52 - 0:55will create happy,
healthy children and families, -
0:56 - 0:58contributing to a stronger society.
-
1:11 - 1:14I’m the kindergarten ESL teacher.
-
1:14 - 1:18I teach three classes,
and all of them are in English. -
1:18 - 1:20Her classroom is bursting with energy
-
1:20 - 1:22as the kids engage in fun activities.
-
1:30 - 1:33Being a volunteer
is not always simple or easy. -
1:34 - 1:37Leilani has had to adapt
to a new language and culture. -
1:37 - 1:40When she arrived,
she couldn’t speak Albanian. -
1:40 - 1:43And then I come here
and I don’t understand anything, -
1:43 - 1:46and everybody’s translating for me.
-
1:46 - 1:49Another challenge is being so far
from her family and friends -
1:49 - 1:51in the United States.
-
1:51 - 1:55But the loneliest times
have only reinforced her trust in God. -
1:55 - 1:59My spiritual life
has definitely become stronger -
1:59 - 2:01just being here for a month.
-
2:01 - 2:02I didn’t even expect it.
-
2:02 - 2:05God is there every single day.
-
2:06 - 2:10I came here,
and my first day here I was like, -
2:10 - 2:13"What am I doing here?"
-
2:13 - 2:19But through this whole process
you can see God. -
2:19 - 2:21And so just being here I’m like,
-
2:21 - 2:23"Whoa, You do have me,
You do take care of me." -
2:23 - 2:26It just shocked me. It’s pretty cool.
-
2:26 - 2:28It’s actually really cool to know
-
2:28 - 2:29somebody’s watching out for you.
-
2:30 - 2:33Please pray
for Adventist Volunteers like Leilani, -
2:33 - 2:36who have accepted God’s call to serve.
-
2:36 - 2:39You too can visit AdventistVolunteers.org
-
2:39 - 2:42to see a list of current
volunteer opportunities. -
2:43 - 2:46Thank you for supporting
the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s work -
2:46 - 2:47around the world!
