Sarah Silverman's Brief But Spectacular take on saying goodbye

Eoff: Sarah Silverman is known

as one of the most fearless

voices in comedy pushing the art

in new directions.

In her new special she talks

about losing her father and

stepmother just days apart and

tonight she shares her brief but

spectacular take on the synergy

between humor and grace.

>> My dad was the funniest in

the family.

Everyone called him Schleppy.

And he ran a ladies discount

store.

He did his own radio ads and

they were terrible.

At the end he would say, when

you want the very best but

you're too cheap.

he taught me a bunch of

swearwords.

My mother, she was Diane

chambers from Chairez.

She was very passionate about

action and grammar.

My step mom Janice called

herself the wicked stepmother.

She was like -- did you talk to

that boy Jeff that you told me

about?

They loved each other very much.

My mother died nine years ago

and she was holding the hand of

Janice/

life is long if you let it.

My special is called

"Postmortem."

The most surface meaning, after

the deaths of my parents.

The stand up I did was about

them dying.

I was lucky.

I actually adored my parents.

They came over every Sunday and

it was my favorite day of the

week.

My step mom Janice passed away

and my dad was going and we were

taking care of him at home.

He was not afraid of death at

all.

I asked him.

And he said, not at all.

But he said, I am scared though

that it will hurt.

He was terrified of pain.

The doctor called and said, this

is it.

He is guiding.

But he did say the way he will

die is kidney failure which just

happens to be a painless death.

And I was so happy for him

because I knew his one fear was

that it would hurt.

And Iran in and said -- great --

and I ran in and said, great

news.

There really is no age that you

are ready to be without your

parents.

I will still email them.

I know they are not online -- or

are they?

But it just feels nice to send

them an email or a text

sometimes.

>> I've heard people say that

the last thing your parents

teach you is how to die.

You feel like your dad taught

you?

>> Being a comedian I've learned

how to die several times.

Now that I have been through

this side of it, I feel like

people are like -- I could never

change the diaper of my parents

or care for them in that way.

But, yes you can.

You will find that you can and

you are so grateful to do that.
