What is the Woke Right? | James Lindsay

  • 0:00 - 0:04
woke ideology has been spreading among conservatives
  • 0:04 - 0:07
and it could destroy the Republican Party
  • 0:07 - 0:10
welcome to American covered I'm Chris Chapel
  • 0:10 - 0:14
more than half a century ago the Soviets had a plan to destroy America
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    not with bombs or guns
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    but by subverting American culture
  • 0:19 - 0:23
by taking the existing movement for racial and gender equality
  • 0:23 - 0:27
and subverting it using the ideology of class struggle
  • 0:27 - 0:30
eventually this gave way to what we call woke
  • 0:30 - 0:34
some who is woke has supposedly woken up to the truth
  • 0:34 - 0:37
that all of history is about victims and oppressors
  • 0:37 - 0:42
and America is a fundamentally racist patriarchy designed
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    to suppress minorities
  • 0:44 - 0:46
that might sound like the progressive left to you
  • 0:46 - 0:49
and it is but some of this woke ideology
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    has also become popular
  • 0:51 - 0:53
among some groups on the far right
  • 0:53 - 0:56
and it could rip the conservative movement apart
  • 0:56 - 0:59
Matt Shelly and I sat down to talk about this
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    with Dr James Lindsay
  • 1:00 - 1:05
he's an author political commentator and founder of the website and podcast new discourses
  • 1:05 - 1:09
and he's joined us on our latest China unscripted podcast
  • 1:09 - 1:12
so why did I start caring about this woke right all of a sudden
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    and like you said
  • 1:13 - 1:16
uh we've just had this big victory right and um
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    what is it
  • 1:18 - 1:22
well the what is it is easil easy to answer
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    it's people on the right
  • 1:24 - 1:27
that have adop adopted the woke left tactics
  • 1:27 - 1:30
they think like the woke left they act like the woke left
  • 1:30 - 1:33
in other words they walk like a duck and they talk like a duck
  • 1:33 - 1:35
so they're a duck in other words
  • 1:35 - 1:38
they have different values different conclusions
  • 1:38 - 1:40
they want to push so-called Trad values
  • 1:40 - 1:43
sometimes they call themselves postmodern Trad
  • 1:43 - 1:46
or postmodern traditionalists so not real Traditional Values
  • 1:46 - 1:51
you know this kind of like hipster Pastiche of of Traditional Values
  • 1:51 - 1:53
but they're going to try to push that and force everybody into it
  • 1:53 - 1:56
they use cancel culture they use smears
  • 1:56 - 2:00
they use you know all the all the nasty woke tricks that you're used to
  • 2:00 - 2:03
they believe that power is the be all that ends all
  • 2:03 - 2:06
they think that pursuing and grabbing and wielding power
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    is absolutely necessary
  • 2:08 - 2:09
    and despite the fact
  • 2:09 - 2:12
one of their biggest claims for the last several years
  • 2:12 - 2:14
because these have been around for several years
  • 2:14 - 2:16
has been we're not going to be able to vote our way out
  • 2:16 - 2:18
of this what are you going to do vote harder
  • 2:18 - 2:22
and then allegedly we just had this Victory where we actually did vote harder
  • 2:22 - 2:24
and got our way out of it like um
  • 2:24 - 2:26
so their their prediction about how things work
  • 2:26 - 2:28
didn't seem to work out exactly right
  • 2:28 - 2:30
but uh so that's what they are
  • 2:30 - 2:33
but like I said they've been around for a few years
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    um what they've done is
  • 2:34 - 2:37
they've taken up with the sort of they consider them
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    forbidden right-wing philosophers
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    not necessarily traditional conservatives
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    largely people like Thomas Carlile
  • 2:43 - 2:46
who's considered the father of both maoism
  • 2:46 - 2:48
and the father of uh fascism
  • 2:48 - 2:50
they take up with people like Carl Schmidt
  • 2:50 - 2:54
who was the crown jurist of the Third Reich
  • 2:54 - 2:57
um who came up with a very variety of political philosophies
  • 2:57 - 3:00
about the absolute sovereignty of the executive
  • 3:00 - 3:04
and um the idea that all politics comes down to a violent conflict
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    between friend and enemy
  • 3:06 - 3:08
and if that sounds a lot like how the Chinese use it
  • 3:08 - 3:12
that's because the Chinese adopted all of Schmidt in the 1980s or earlier
  • 3:12 - 3:15
and have been explicitly schmidan for a long time
  • 3:15 - 3:18
uh I mean they actually you can look that up ccp's
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    actual political philosophy is is
  • 3:20 - 3:25
Schmidt attached to um what was either ma dong or Duna ping thought
  • 3:25 - 3:28
so like that's that's their guy they've got like
  • 3:28 - 3:31
I said Alistair McIntyre who's like Marx is right
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    except about his conclusions
  • 3:33 - 3:36
because Marx wanted to maintain the fruits of modernity
  • 3:36 - 3:39
but the fact is that modernism itself is the problem
  • 3:39 - 3:41
so Marx's critique is can be salvaged
  • 3:41 - 3:44
    and retooled to destroy modernism
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    and Classical liberalism completely
  • 3:46 - 3:49
but Marx was essentially right this is one of their core philosopher
  • 3:49 - 3:53
s um they've taken up with the fascist philosopher Julius aola
  • 3:53 - 3:56
uh so these are the kind of guys that they're talking they're big fans of
  • 3:56 - 4:01
Hans Herman hop who was also very keen on Marxist thought and Marxist methods
  • 4:01 - 4:02
    although to different conclusions
  • 4:02 - 4:06
some of them flirt with Hitler who explicitly said that he was using Marxist methods
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    and intended to complete them
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    although for his own methodologies
  • 4:10 - 4:12
they're they're a lot of them are nationalists
  • 4:12 - 4:15
but their definition of nation is ethnonationalist
  • 4:15 - 4:18
and it matches exactly Stalin's definition of nationalism
  • 4:18 - 4:21
from Marxism and the national question in 1913
  • 4:21 - 4:23
which he adopted in Vienna after going
  • 4:23 - 4:26
and seeing he bringing his Bolshevik ideology
  • 4:26 - 4:30
and witnessing the way that uh German folk uh
  • 4:30 - 4:33
nationalism kind of interacted in the Austrian Malo
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    before um World War I
  • 4:36 - 4:40
and so it's like this is just a hot mess of bad ideas
  • 4:40 - 4:42
that have kind of come together in this
  • 4:42 - 4:44
uh pursuit of power for these guys so
  • 4:44 - 4:47
yeah I started to use the term a few months ago
  • 4:47 - 4:50
I didn't coin the term I've I think popularized it
  • 4:50 - 4:52
and put it on a map
  • 4:52 - 4:54
um as I tend to do I've tried to expose these guys
  • 4:54 - 4:57
but the problem is frankly nobody cares
  • 4:57 - 4:59
uh what people are doing is you know
  • 4:59 - 5:01
as my friend said to me the other day
  • 5:01 - 5:04
the boys just want 5 days in the sun to celebrate
  • 5:04 - 5:05
and here you are saying this thing
  • 5:05 - 5:07
but I'm going to point out you know you know
  • 5:07 - 5:11
you asked we just had this Victory there's kind of this tone like do we have to do this now
  • 5:11 - 5:13
and I think we do have to do this now
  • 5:13 - 5:16
and in fact I started before the election we had not done this Victory
  • 5:16 - 5:19
I decided at the beginning of October this year
  • 5:19 - 5:20
so a full month before the election
  • 5:20 - 5:24
I'd been holding my tongue and holding my tongue is like it's strategically unwise
  • 5:24 - 5:26
let the election happen then we can tackle the woke right
  • 5:26 - 5:29
so for you know better part of a year
  • 5:29 - 5:31
I've been sitting here waiting for this freaking election
  • 5:31 - 5:34
so I can just be Unleashed to talk about this problem
  • 5:34 - 5:35
    that I've been watching build
  • 5:35 - 5:37
but in October I was like holy crap
  • 5:37 - 5:40
they're positioning themselves to fill Trump's Administration if he wins
  • 5:40 - 5:43
or to spark a civil war if he loses
  • 5:43 - 5:45
    so better speak up now
  • 5:45 - 5:48
and so I started to speak up ahead of the election very concerned
  • 5:48 - 5:50
that these people like all wokes
  • 5:50 - 5:52
who are obsessed with gaining power
  • 5:52 - 5:55
and multiplying their own power are going to insinuate themselves
  • 5:55 - 5:57
into every single possible thing that they can
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    following this Trump win
  • 5:59 - 6:03
and even though most of them were like vigorously Pro disantis
  • 6:03 - 6:06
    during the uh nasty primary
  • 6:06 - 6:08
and then they were some of them were outright
  • 6:08 - 6:10
anti-trump in the leadup to the election
  • 6:10 - 6:13
they've all now claimed the mantle of Trump trump Trump trump
  • 6:13 - 6:17
we're Trump and we're you know we're the true inheritors of trump
  • 6:17 - 6:19
this was a big rejection of woke left racism
  • 6:19 - 6:22
and that's what this is all about um
  • 6:22 - 6:25
and so they are claiming to be the only true conservatives
  • 6:25 - 6:27
and the only true people who understand the problem
  • 6:27 - 6:29
people like me don't know what the problem really is
  • 6:29 - 6:32
we don't have Solutions blah blah blah
  • 6:32 - 6:35
and we're troublemakers so we all have to be excluded from access to Trump World
  • 6:35 - 6:40
I get told daily you will have no access to Trump World anymore at all
  • 6:40 - 6:41
    no chance
  • 6:41 - 6:42
because we're going to keep you boxed out
  • 6:42 - 6:45
by these lunatics so my goal has been to think
  • 6:45 - 6:48
you know what are these guys are going to do if they get in positions of power
  • 6:48 - 6:49
they're going to do what woke people always do
  • 6:49 - 6:52
they're going to use their position of power to hire more people exactly like them to
  • 6:52 - 6:54
    consolidate their power
  • 6:54 - 6:57
until we have a problem that we can't freaking manage
  • 6:57 - 6:59
and um I don't even think that's their main purpose
  • 6:59 - 7:01
but I felt like it was important to speak up
  • 7:01 - 7:04
I think they have a totally different main purpose was
  • 7:04 - 7:05
what what do you think their main purpose is
  • 7:05 - 7:07
I think their main purpose is
  • 7:07 - 7:10
to split the Coalition that delivered Trump into pieces
  • 7:10 - 7:13
it's to get rid of the Jews get rid of the disaffected Democrats
  • 7:13 - 7:15
get rid of all these people
  • 7:15 - 7:17
who just came over for the first time
  • 7:17 - 7:20
voted for Trump maybe the first time they ever voted for Republican first of all
  • 7:20 - 7:23
that's a broad broad Coalition of people who voted for Trump
  • 7:23 - 7:25
first we got to get rid of them
  • 7:25 - 7:29
so Trump loses his gigantic uh cross-dimensional
  • 7:29 - 7:31
or what cross political base of support
  • 7:31 - 7:35
probably does not have enough vote power to carry
  • 7:35 - 7:37
    in 26 or 28
  • 7:37 - 7:40
then there are some deep fault lines actually in the conservative movement
  • 7:40 - 7:42
    are we pro-israel or anti-israel
  • 7:42 - 7:46
let's drive a it's never about the CCP they don't talk about the CCP for a minute
  • 7:46 - 7:48
because everybody should be on the same side of that one
  • 7:48 - 7:50
what they talk about is Israel
  • 7:50 - 7:53
why because they know that they can drive a wedge
  • 7:53 - 7:55
    into the conservative movement itself
  • 7:55 - 7:57
while scaring off all the Jews
  • 7:57 - 7:59
if they can just Hammer that wedge down on
  • 7:59 - 8:00
    yes Israel know Israel
  • 8:00 - 8:04
we can make it very simple we don't have to get into their fancy terminology of Zionism or
  • 8:04 - 8:07
Jewish power or any of these other conspiracies or whatever else
  • 8:07 - 8:10
we don't have to get it or is it is it anti-Semitism is it's not no
  • 8:10 - 8:13
No the goal is um pro-israel anti-israel and
  • 8:13 - 8:15
to split the conservative movement around that
  • 8:15 - 8:18
and to make it as messy and nasty as possible
  • 8:18 - 8:20
so that again we're not unified
  • 8:20 - 8:23
we're not pouring our resources into fixing the country
  • 8:23 - 8:26
in the time that we have to do that right now
  • 8:26 - 8:30
and that we're not um we're not likely to win in 26 or 28
  • 8:30 - 8:34
and then finally there's another deep fault line in the conservative movement
  • 8:34 - 8:38
which is the uh Freedom versus virtue if you will line
  • 8:38 - 8:42
are we Americans who believe in individual liberties and freedom
  • 8:42 - 8:43
or are we people who are going
  • 8:43 - 8:48
to take an image of virtue and impose it upon the population
  • 8:48 - 8:50
and their argument is that their vision of virtue is
  • 8:50 - 8:53
necessary to correct the cultural excesses
  • 8:53 - 8:55
that the left has visited upon us
  • 8:55 - 8:58
and the subversion of the Soviets and the the Chinese have brought upon us um
  • 8:59 - 9:01
I mean the CCP there of course uh
  • 9:01 - 9:05
and therefore we have to impose a vision of virtue on the society
  • 9:05 - 9:06
in order to renew it from within
  • 9:06 - 9:11
so um that's going to actually be that's a deep fault line in conservatism
  • 9:11 - 9:14
so again you have two deep fault lines within the conservative movement
  • 9:14 - 9:18
that you want to split and keep us fighting and ununified
  • 9:18 - 9:20
weaken the Electoral potential in 26
  • 9:20 - 9:22
weaken the Electoral potential in 28
  • 9:22 - 9:25
while generating massive amounts of stuff that
  • 9:25 - 9:29
the left can then just come out with and say look they're anti-semitic look
  • 9:29 - 9:32
they hate black people look they hate gay people look they hate women
  • 9:32 - 9:35
because that's all they ever talk about is how much they hate all these groups that
  • 9:35 - 9:37
they feel have been oppressing them
  • 9:37 - 9:42
and so you are you're creating the conditions to massively lose in 26
  • 9:42 - 9:45
so Trump becomes ineffective for his last two years in office
  • 9:45 - 9:47
    and massively lose in 28
  • 9:47 - 9:52
where all the Democrats have to do and it's to be fair not entirely clear
  • 9:52 - 9:54
    that they can do it
  • 9:54 - 9:58
but all the Democrats have to do is start being very reasonable on issues of race
  • 9:58 - 9:59
    and talk about economic class
  • 9:59 - 10:04
which is exactly what they're pivoting to after the murder of that uh CEO the healthcare CEO
  • 10:04 - 10:07
that's all class class class now it's billionaire billionaire billionaire
  • 10:07 - 10:10
if they shut up about race and sex and sexuality
  • 10:10 - 10:12
they drag the drag queens off the stages
  • 10:12 - 10:13
    stop pushing that everywhere
  • 10:13 - 10:17
they look reasonable the radical right looks insane
  • 10:17 - 10:19
and we lose hard in 26 and
  • 10:19 - 10:21
we lose hard again in 28
  • 10:21 - 10:24
when I say we I mean I mean people who care about
  • 10:24 - 10:27
getting the Communist threat out of this country
  • 10:27 - 10:30
and so they're their their objective their purpose
  • 10:30 - 10:32
some most of the people in it probably don't realize this
  • 10:32 - 10:34
and are just beating their chest and
  • 10:34 - 10:37
thinking you know as they spell it lfg
  • 10:37 - 10:41
but the fact of the matter is what the purpose of this movement is is to
  • 10:41 - 10:44
Splinter and destroy all the Electoral
  • 10:44 - 10:46
potential going forward of the right uh
  • 10:46 - 10:50
RIT large this Trump Coalition this pro-america magga Coalition
  • 10:50 - 10:53
that is the literally Beacon of Hope For The World
  • 10:53 - 10:56
their job is to toxify and split that in half
  • 10:56 - 10:58
and if you don't believe that's the case
  • 10:58 - 11:01
just look at the alleged tenant media Sting the doj published
  • 11:01 - 11:06
what was its purpose why did it allegedly receive $10 million of Russian money
  • 11:06 - 11:08
    to give to conservative influencers
  • 11:08 - 11:12
it was specifically to seow Discord and dis and
  • 11:12 - 11:14
and emnity within the conservative movement
  • 11:14 - 11:16
to split the conservative movement from within
  • 11:16 - 11:18
and that's what I think the true purpose of this movement
  • 11:18 - 11:23
is is to split apart the humongous to
  • 11:23 - 11:25
    scatter it like billiard balls
  • 11:25 - 11:28
the humongous Coalition that delivered Trump a historic win
  • 11:28 - 11:32
and frankly allowed us to vote our way
  • 11:32 - 11:34
maybe vote our way out of Communism
  • 11:34 - 11:37
they are they are a spoiler to all of that
  • 11:37 - 11:38
    that's what they're for well
  • 11:38 - 11:40
what's the what's the end game there
  • 11:40 - 11:46
because if you so the the woke you're saying that the woke rights end game
  • 11:46 - 11:49
is for the woke left to succeed
  • 11:49 - 11:52
yeah well you got to understand how these movements work
  • 11:52 - 11:56
most of the woke right people like if you had a woke right guy debating me
  • 11:56 - 11:58
he'd say none of us want that
  • 11:58 - 12:01
no you're wrong you so you're infiltrated
  • 12:01 - 12:07
you have a KGB Handler or an FSB Handler somewhere in your hierarchy you don't know about
  • 12:07 - 12:10
you have deep State actors in your hierarchy you don't know about
  • 12:10 - 12:15
you have billionaires on the left laundering money through NGO to come to you
  • 12:15 - 12:18
to make sure that you do the wrong thing so their guys win in two years
  • 12:18 - 12:21
and so you guys are all totally organic
  • 12:21 - 12:26
but you're not organic in the fact that you're getting propped up by Bad actors with lots of money
  • 12:26 - 12:30
and so I would I would this sounds totally conspiratory
  • 12:30 - 12:32
that's exactly how it works I hate to tell you that's exactly how it works
  • 12:32 - 12:35
I mean this is a show about China right about CCP
  • 12:35 - 12:38
that's how the CCP does it it's called dripping it's a technique
  • 12:38 - 12:40
you find people that are doing activism productive to your goals
  • 12:40 - 12:43
and you drip money on them in a way that they don't
  • 12:43 - 12:45
know that they're getting money given to them
  • 12:45 - 12:48
it's what they did in the the thought reform prisons in China
  • 12:48 - 12:50
when when prisoners would do the things that
  • 12:50 - 12:51
they were supposed to do in line with their thought reform
  • 12:51 - 12:54
they would be randomly rewarded with cigarettes
  • 12:54 - 12:56
or food or snacks or candy or treats
  • 12:56 - 12:58
and never told why they were rewarded
  • 12:58 - 13:01
and it was actually just oper conditioning to get them to do it
  • 13:01 - 13:05
so yeah you've got influencers all throughout this network of conservatives
  • 13:05 - 13:07
who are on the take or on the dime
  • 13:07 - 13:09
who are working for the other side
  • 13:09 - 13:11
who are leading these poor fools
  • 13:11 - 13:14
into supporting something that's going to be their own destruction
  • 13:14 - 13:16
so where everywhere they can what they do is they take power
  • 13:16 - 13:19
and then what they do is try to get their friends in power with them
  • 13:19 - 13:23
and so that is the model for institutional capture
  • 13:23 - 13:27
and they can get a relatively sizable amount
  • 13:27 - 13:29
    relatively quickly
  • 13:29 - 13:31
but again I don't think that's their purpose
  • 13:31 - 13:35
I think their purpose is to uh shatter the conservative movement
  • 13:35 - 13:37
and provide and I don't mean the purpose
  • 13:37 - 13:40
from the people on the ground don't think they're doing this purpose
  • 13:40 - 13:44
they are the foot soldiers of of of of a strategy that's written for them
  • 13:45 - 13:47
um this to shatter the conservative movement
  • 13:47 - 13:51
and to create basically the basis for propaganda from the left
  • 13:51 - 13:55
to say we're the reasonable ones we told you not to vote for the fascist right
  • 13:55 - 13:57
we told you not to vote for Trump
  • 13:57 - 14:00
that was just one piece of our almost two 2 hourong interview
