As with all myths, there are many versions of the origin of this mini god. So I'm going to tell you my favourite one, or at least the one that makes the most sense, in my opinion.

You might be a bit confused right now, thinking Zagreus is Hades' son, even though there's also a version that talks about this. But I think it makes far more sense that he's the son of Zeus.

Zeus had a daughter with his sister, the goddess Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, without her consent. She didn't want anything to do with Zeus, but he forced her, and from their union Percephone was born, the famous Percephone. If you didn't know, her first name wasn't Percefone, it was Core, which means maiden.

Demeter knew perfectly well that her daughter was in danger at the Mount Olympus, and in fact anywhere else. She knew that Zeus, Poseidon and many other gods would want to sleep with her. And Demeter tried to protect her daughter Persephone by hiding her.
