Nouman Ali Khan Bio:

Nouman Ali Khan began his formal Arabic training during his childhood schooling in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He continued his Arabic grammar study in Pakistan, where he received a scholarship for ranking among the top 10 scores in the national Arabic studies board examination. Under the guidance of Dr. Abdus-Samie, founder and formal principal of Quran College in Faisalabad, Pakistan, he developed a keen methodical understanding of Arabic grammar. He further benefited from Dr. Abdus-Samie by internalizing his unique teaching methods and later translating his work into English for the benefit of his own students. Nouman currently serves as professor of Arabic at Nassau Community College and has taught Modern Standard and Classical Arabic at various venues for nearly 6 years with over 700 students. His handbook published by the Bayyinah Arabic Studies Institute for ARA-201 is also being used as a class aide at the Jaamiah-Al-Uloom Al-Islamiyyah, Institute of Islamic Education in Ajax, Canada.

[Nouman Ali Khan] Taqwa is being shown a couple of hundred times in the Quran.

A couple of hundred times Allah talks about taqwa.

If Allah talks about taqwa that many times -

actually, let me not finish that sentence:

So how many people here have teen-age kids?

Teen-age kids? OK.

Arabic (?)

Irvin is about to erupt. Give it 5 years.

All these little - little monkeys we've got running around, they're going to be teen-agers.

Those are scary times.

Those are scary times: my kids and your kids.

The average age here is very young, but give it five years. Oh, my goodness.

They're going to be teen-agers and people are going to say

how many people have teen-agers, there's going to be people crying '[mock crying] I have teenagers"

You know. How many times do you have to call your teen-agers to do their homework?

[From the audience: hundred times]

[Nouman Ali Khan] Oh, my God! "Do your homework! Do your homework! Do your homework!

Did you do your homework? Did your homework? You're going to do it, right?

OK. Just hey, by the way, do it."

[laughter]

[Nouman Ali Khan] Why do you have to tell them so many times?

If you tell the people - if I came over to your house as a guest,

and you keep telling your child "Do your homework" I'll stop you and say:

"Why do you tell him so many times?" And you'll say - well, what will you say?

[from the audience: inaudible]
"Because he doesn't do it! He doesn't listen!"

And then I have to say: "You know what? You're the father, you're the mother, you know him better.

You know him better.

So the fact that you are repeating so much, you must know what you're doing."

Allah repeats taqwa a couple of hundred times in the Quran.

Does that tell you something? Who is He talking to?

You and me.

Arabic (?)

He keeps saying, and he keeps saying, and he keeps saying.

Well, what does that mean, logically? [laughs]

"Ah, you don't really do it." (?)

If we did it, how many times would He have to mention it? (?)

One - done.

Let me give you a proof. Allah says "fast" in the Quran. One time in the Quran. One time.

Lot of us fast already (?) or no?

Aw man. [laughs] 2:06

He didn't have to tell us a hundred times "Fast in Ramadan Fast in Ramadan Fast in Ramadan"

He's done.Finish.

Done deal.

He says "have taqwa" hundreds of times.

So which one is harder, fasting in Ramadan or taqwa?

[Nouman Ali Khan] Taqwa is hard. Taqwa is hard.

Now, I told you there are two haya (?).

There's the haya (?) about Ramadan itself,

but there is an haya (?) before about fasting.

There is an haya (?) before about fasting.

So before you finish the hayat (?) about Ramadan, I want to tell you something about fasting itself.

Allah says

[Arabic (?)]

You are given fasting so you can get taqwa.

Basically, the premiss of that haya (?) is, you can develop -

hopefully, you can develop taqwa fully by the act of fasting.

What is the - what's the connection between me not drinking and eating, and developing taqwa?

Not drinking and eating is something physical, yes?

You feel the effects of it physically or spiritually?

[From the audience] Physically.

[Nouman Ali Khan] Physically.

But taqwa is something physical or spiritual?
[From the audience] Spiritual.

[Nouman Ali Khan] Ah, so Allah says, do something physical

and you will have spiritual effects.

Isn't that what He's saying?

So we have to understand how can this be?

We have to figure this out.

Listen: if you've fasted before, and I know all of you have,

it's a hot day, you're with your co-worker, and he's gulping like [makes gulping noise]

right next to you.

and youre looking at him drink

and your throat is begging, your throat is screaming at you,

"Just take some water!"

You're starving. You're starving and you know, just before it's ..... time,

right before you're sitting at the table,

you can hear the fries frying, you know

and the food .... has been put on the table,

you're looking at it (4:00)

Taqiyya is mentioned a couple of hundreds of times in the bible

a couple of hundred times it talks about Taqiyya

if Alla talks about Taqivva that many times

Allah mentions Taqiyya a couple hundred times in the bible, does that tell you something?
