Analyzing Group Policy using Group Policy Analytics Tool

  • 0:01 - 0:03
Hi, everyone. Thanks for watching this
  • 0:03 - 0:06
video. Hope you all are doing well today.
  • 0:06 - 0:07
During this video, I will discuss and
  • 0:07 - 0:10
demonstrate the Group Policy Analytics tool,
  • 0:10 - 0:11
which is part of Microsoft Endpoint
  • 0:11 - 0:15
    Manager--or Microsoft Intune--and can help
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    organizations in planning the migration
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    of Windows management from
  • 0:19 - 0:22
traditional Group Policy Objects to a
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    cloud-based MDM solution. Organizations
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    generally leverage Group Policy Objects
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    to configure settings on personal
  • 0:27 - 0:30
computers or any other on-premise devices.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    But these days,
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    many organizations are also
  • 0:33 - 0:36
looking for some kind of cloud solution
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    to manage
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    their
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    their Windows 10 devices,
  • 0:40 - 0:43
because users are no longer limited to
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    the organization's perimeter network. So,
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    Group Policy tools can help
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    organizations in analyzing on-premise
  • 0:49 - 0:53
Group Policy Objects, which can further lead to planning
  • 0:53 - 0:55
the migration strategy for Windows 10
  • 0:55 - 0:57
management from Group Policies to a
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    cloud-based solution.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
So, let's get into the demo now. And the
  • 1:02 - 1:04
first thing we need to do is...
  • 1:04 - 1:07
we export the Group Policy as an XML file.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
Let's log in to the domain controller and
  • 1:09 - 1:12
export a Group Policy as an XML file.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
This is my domain controller, and
  • 1:16 - 1:20
let's go to Group Policy Management.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
And this is one of the policies--MD
  • 1:24 - 1:26
Onboarding GPO. This is one of the policies
  • 1:26 - 1:28
where I have made some changes.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
So, let's export this policy as an XML file.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    If we go to
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    Save Report,
  • 1:35 - 1:36
    then
  • 1:36 - 1:39
choose the location--let's save it here
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    in the C drive. And
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    Save as type.
  • 1:43 - 1:47
Change the Save as type from HTML to XML file.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
So now we have an XML document for this. Let
  • 1:49 - 1:53
me copy it onto my local system.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    And
  • 1:56 - 1:59
now, the second thing we need to do
  • 1:59 - 2:02
is import this XML file into the
  • 2:02 - 2:04
Group Policy Analytics tool. So let's go
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    to Microsoft Endpoint Manager.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
If you go to Devices, you have an option
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    for Group Policy Analytics.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
Now, let's import the settings XML file.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    First,
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    choose the XML file.
  • 2:19 - 2:23
Import has been completed. Let's close this.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
So you can see there's 70% of the
  • 2:25 - 2:27
settings that are supported by the MDM
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    solution--settings marked in
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    green. These settings can be
  • 2:32 - 2:35
configured using your MDM solution. Now,
  • 2:35 - 2:38
if you go to the reports
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    and
  • 2:39 - 2:41
if you want to see the Group Policy
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    Analytics report,
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    you can click here and
  • 2:45 - 2:48
you can just do a refresh.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
It will show you the Readiness mark.
  • 2:51 - 2:52
Ready for migration means there are
  • 2:52 - 2:54
11 settings that are ready for
  • 2:54 - 2:57
migration, and there are 12 settings
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    that are not supported.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    And there are 23 settings
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    which are in total.
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    If you go to Reports,
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    then Group Policy Migration Readiness,
  • 3:07 - 3:10
you can click on this report and
  • 3:10 - 3:13
you can see that all these policies are
  • 3:13 - 3:16
    ready for migration.
  • 3:16 - 3:17
This means you can configure these
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    policies using
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    the cloud-based MDM solution on
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    Windows 10 devices.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
So, now this report section gives you
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    some idea that
  • 3:26 - 3:29
these are the settings which are
  • 3:29 - 3:31
available in the MDM solution. And
  • 3:31 - 3:33
in case, If you plan to migrate
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    your
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    Windows management solution from
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    your Group Policy to your
  • 3:38 - 3:41
cloud-based MDM solution, then these are the
  • 3:41 - 3:43
settings that are available and can be
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    configured using the MDM solution.
  • 3:45 - 3:48
So this concludes our demonstration of the
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    Group Policy Analytics tool, and
  • 3:51 - 3:53
I hope this was informative for you.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
Please do share and subscribe if you
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    really find this
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    work for you.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
If, in case, if you want me to cover
  • 4:00 - 4:03
more videos on specific topics, please
  • 4:03 - 4:05
do mention in the comment section of
  • 4:05 - 4:07
this video. I will try to cover those
  • 4:07 - 4:09
topics in my future videos. Thank you.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    Have a nice day.
