Calculating profit with multiplication | 4th grade math (TX TEKS) | Khan Academy

  • 0:00 - 0:04
    - [Instructor] We're told
    that Sarah spent $79.98
  • 0:04 - 0:06
on materials to create custom candles.
  • 0:06 - 0:11
She sold 12 candles for $14 each.
  • 0:11 - 0:15
    What was Sarah's profit
    from the candle sales?
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    So pause this video,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
have a go at that before
    we do this together.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    So let's just remind
    ourselves what profit is.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
Profit is going to be equal
  • 0:24 - 0:26
to the money that you earn,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
maybe I'll write that in green
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    'cause that's a good thing,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    money that you earn,
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    but you probably spent some
    money to get that money,
  • 0:35 - 0:39
minus the money that you spent.
  • 0:40 - 0:44
    So let's think about the
    money that Sarah earned here.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
Well, we see here that she sold 12 candles
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    for $14 each.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
So the money that she earned
is going to be 12 times $14.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
So there's several ways we could do that,
  • 0:56 - 1:00
    but let's just do 12 times 14.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
We could say 4 times 12.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
Well, I'll just do it the standard way
  • 1:04 - 1:06
just to not confuse you a little bit.
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    4 times 2 is 8,
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    4 times 1, it's really 4 times 10,
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    is 4 or 40.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
Since we're looking at the place values,
  • 1:13 - 1:13
    we'll put a 0 here
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    since we're gonna be
    multiplying everything
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    times this one now.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    And then 1 times 2 is 2,
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    1 times 1 is 1.
  • 1:21 - 1:22
Or another way to think about that,
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    4 times 12 is 48
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    and 10 times 12 is 120.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
And now we can add all of this together,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    8 plus 0 is 8,
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    4 plus 2 is 6,
  • 1:33 - 1:35
and then we have this 1 here.
  • 1:35 - 1:39
So the total money earned is $168.
  • 1:39 - 1:40
And what is the money spent?
  • 1:40 - 1:45
Well, it says that Sarah spent $79.98,
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    so minus 79.98.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
If I figure this out, I know
    what the total profit is.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
Some of you might be able
to do this in your head,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
but I will just break this down
  • 1:55 - 1:57
just to make this a little
    bit more straightforward.
  • 1:57 - 2:01
So we are going to have,
let me do that green color,
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    168.00 minus
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    - 79.98.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
And what is this going to be equal to?
  • 2:13 - 2:15
Well, I'm gonna have to do a little bit
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    of regrouping over here.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
And so I am going to,
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    well, even here, this
8 is less than this 9,
  • 2:22 - 2:23
the 6 is less than the 7.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
So let's take this 100 and
put it into the tens place,
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    so it'd be 10 tens.
  • 2:28 - 2:29
So if we add those 10 tens
  • 2:29 - 2:30
to the 6 tens that are already there,
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    we get 16 tens.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
And now I can take one of those 16 tens,
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    so I have 15 tens,
  • 2:36 - 2:38
and turn that into 10 ones,
  • 2:38 - 2:40
so now I have 18 ones.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
And then I can take one of those 18 ones
  • 2:42 - 2:44
so now I have 17 ones
  • 2:44 - 2:46
and turn it into 10 tenths.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    And then I can take
    one of those 10 tenths,
  • 2:48 - 2:49
so now I have 9 tenths
  • 2:49 - 2:52
and turn it into 10 hundredths.
  • 2:52 - 2:53
And now I'm ready to subtract,
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    10 hundredths minus 8
    hundredths is 2 hundredths.
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    Nine hundredths..
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    Sorry, 9 tenths minus
    9 tenths is no tenths.
  • 3:01 - 3:06
And then 17 ones minus 9 ones is 8.
  • 3:06 - 3:10
And then 15 tens minus 7 tens
  • 3:10 - 3:14
is going to be equal to
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    15 tens minus 7 tens
  • 3:16 - 3:19
is also going to be equal to 8.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    And so then we have...
  • 3:21 - 3:22
Let's see, did I do all that right?
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    Okay, there we go,
  • 3:24 - 3:27
    we have $88.02.
  • 3:28 - 3:30
And I like to just double check that.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
If I were to subtracting $80,
  • 3:32 - 3:35
so if I just add 2 cents to this,
  • 3:35 - 3:37
if I were to subtract $80 from this,
  • 3:37 - 3:40
I would get straight to $88,
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    but I'm subtracting 2
    cents less than that,
  • 3:41 - 3:44
so it makes sense that I got to $88.02.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
Let's do another example. These are fun.
  • 3:47 - 3:51
    So here we are told
  • 3:51 - 3:54
that Elena bought 15 vases for $12 each.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
She cleaned and polished the vases,
  • 3:56 - 4:00
then she sold them for a total of $279.67.
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    What was Elena's total
    profit from the vase sales?
  • 4:03 - 4:04
    Again, pause the video,
  • 4:04 - 4:07
    try to figure this out
    before we do this together.
  • 4:07 - 4:07
    Well, just remember,
  • 4:07 - 4:10
profit is money earned minus money sold.
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    So what's the money earned?
  • 4:12 - 4:13
Well, that's what she sold them for.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    She sold them for a
    total of $279.67 cents,
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    $279.67.
  • 4:19 - 4:23
And from that we need to
    subtract the money spent.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
Some money spent, what's the money spent?
  • 4:26 - 4:30
Well, she bought 15 vases for $12 each,
  • 4:30 - 4:33
    so let's multiply 15 times 12.
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    2 times 15 is 30,
  • 4:36 - 4:40
    and then 10 times 15 is 150,
  • 4:40 - 4:43
we're going to get to 180.
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    So you have $279.67
  • 4:45 - 4:47
minus the total amount she spent,
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    which is $180.
  • 4:49 - 4:51
And so this is going to be equal to,
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    some of you...
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    I'll do it both ways.
  • 4:54 - 4:55
    Well, actually, it gets
    a little complicated
  • 4:55 - 4:57
so I'll just do the subtraction
  • 4:57 - 5:02
    so we're gonna have $279.67
  • 5:02 - 5:06
    minus $180.
  • 5:06 - 5:08
That's going to give us our total profit.
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    7 minus 0 is 7,
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    6 minus 0 is 6,
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    9 minus 0 is 9.
  • 5:14 - 5:18
I could just think of 27 minus
18 is 9 and put that here
  • 5:18 - 5:19
or I could do a little bit of regrouping,
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    take one of these hundreds
  • 5:21 - 5:24
and make that into 10 tens.
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    So 17 minus 8 is 9,
  • 5:26 - 5:28
and then I have no hundreds left,
  • 5:28 - 5:29
so I get a total profit
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    of $99.67.
  • 5:34 - 5:36
Another way that you could just make sure
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    you're in the right ballpark.
  • 5:37 - 5:38
    If this was $280,
  • 5:38 - 5:41
so just a little bit more minus $180,
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    that would've been $100.
  • 5:45 - 5:47
But we are just a little bit less,
  • 5:47 - 5:48
we're 33 cents less than that,
  • 5:48 - 5:50
and so it makes sense that we're 33 cents
  • 5:50 - 5:52
less than $100 right over here.
