What it's like to live on the International Space Station

  • Not Synced
    I'm an astronaut.
  • Not Synced
I flew on the Space Shuttle twice,
  • Not Synced
and I lived on the International
Space Station for almost six months.
  • Not Synced
People often ask me the same question,
which is, "What's it like in space?"
  • Not Synced
As if it was a secret.
  • Not Synced
And space belongs to all of us,
  • Not Synced
and I'd like to help you understand
  • Not Synced
why it's a place that is
    magic for all of us.
  • Not Synced
The day after my 50th birthday,
  • Not Synced
I climbed aboard a Russian capsule
  • Not Synced
    in Russia
  • Not Synced
    and launched into space.
  • Not Synced
    Launching is the most
    dangerous thing that we do,
  • Not Synced
and it's also the most thrilling.
  • Not Synced
    Three, two, one... liftoff!
  • Not Synced
    I felt every single bit
    of the controlled fury
  • Not Synced
    of those rocket engines
as they blasted us off the Earth.
  • Not Synced
We went faster, faster, and faster,
  • Not Synced
until, after eight and a half minutes,
  • Not Synced
on purpose, those engines stop --
  • Not Synced
    kabunk --
  • Not Synced
    and we are weightless,
  • Not Synced
and the mission and the magic begin.
  • Not Synced
    Dmitry and Paolo and I
    are circling the Earth
  • Not Synced
    in our tiny spacecraft
  • Not Synced
    approaching a space station carefully.
  • Not Synced
    It's an intricate dance
    at 17,500 miles an hour
  • Not Synced
    between our capsule,
  • Not Synced
the size of a smart car,
  • Not Synced
    and the space station,
the size of a football field.
  • Not Synced
We arrive when those two craft dock
  • Not Synced
    with a gentle thunk.
  • Not Synced
    We open the hatches,
  • Not Synced
have sloppy zero-G hugs with each other,
  • Not Synced
    and now we're six.
  • Not Synced
We're a space family, an instant family.
  • Not Synced
My favorite part about living up there
  • Not Synced
    was the flying.
  • Not Synced
    I loved it.
  • Not Synced
It was like being Peter Pan.
  • Not Synced
    It's not about floating.
  • Not Synced
Just the touch of a finger
  • Not Synced
    can actually push you across
    the entire space station,
  • Not Synced
    and then you sort of
    tuck in with your toes.
  • Not Synced
    One of my favorite things
    was drifting silently
  • Not Synced
    through the space station,
  • Not Synced
which was humming along at night.
  • Not Synced
    I wondered sometimes
if it knew I was there,
  • Not Synced
    just silent,
  • Not Synced
    but sharing the wonder
    of that with the crew
  • Not Synced
was also part of what was important to me.
  • Not Synced
    A typical day in space
  • Not Synced
    starts with the perfect commute.
  • Not Synced
    I wake up,
  • Not Synced
    cruise down the lab,
  • Not Synced
and say hello to the best
    morning view ever.
  • Not Synced
    It's a really fast commute,
    only 30 seconds,
  • Not Synced
    and we never get tired
    of looking out that window.
  • Not Synced
    I think it reminds us
    that we're actually still
  • Not Synced
    very close to Earth.
  • Not Synced
Our crew was the second ever
to use the Canadian robotic arm
  • Not Synced
    to capture a supply ship
the size of a school bus
  • Not Synced
    containing about a dozen
    different experiments
  • Not Synced
and the only chocolate that we would see
    for the next four months.
  • Not Synced
    Now, chocolate aside,
every single one of those experiments
  • Not Synced
    enables yet one more
    scientific question answered
  • Not Synced
that we can't do down here on Earth,
  • Not Synced
and so it's like a different lens,
  • Not Synced
allowing us to see the answers
    to questions like,
  • Not Synced
    "What about combustion?"
  • Not Synced
    "What about fluid dynamics?"
  • Not Synced
    Now, sleeping is delightful.
  • Not Synced
My favorite -- I mean, you could be
upside down, right side up --
  • Not Synced
    my favorite, curled up
in a little ball and floating freely.
  • Not Synced
    Laundry? Nope.
  • Not Synced
    We load our dirty clothes
    into an empty supply ship
  • Not Synced
and send it off into space.
  • Not Synced
    The bathroom.
  • Not Synced
    Everyone wants to know.
  • Not Synced
    It's hard to understand,
so I made a little video
  • Not Synced
because I wanted kids to understand
  • Not Synced
    that the principle of vacuum
    saves the day,
  • Not Synced
and that just a gentle breeze
    helps everything go
  • Not Synced
    where it is supposed to.
  • Not Synced
Well, in real life it does.
  • Not Synced
    Now, recycling, of course,
  • Not Synced
    so we take our urine,
  • Not Synced
we store it, we filter it,
  • Not Synced
    and then we drink it,
  • Not Synced
    and it's actually delicious.
  • Not Synced
    Sitting around the table,
  • Not Synced
    eating food that looks bad
    but actually tastes pretty good,
  • Not Synced
    but it's the gathering around
    the table that's important,
  • Not Synced
    I think both in space
  • Not Synced
    and on Earth,
  • Not Synced
    because that's what cements
    a crew together.
  • Not Synced
For me, music was a way to stay connected
to the rest of the world.
  • Not Synced
I played a duet between Earth and space
  • Not Synced
with Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull
  • Not Synced
    on the 50th anniversary
    of human spaceflight.
  • Not Synced
Connecting to family was so important.
  • Not Synced
I talked with my family almost every day
the whole time I was up there,
  • Not Synced
and I would actually read books to my son
as a way for us just to be together.
  • Not Synced
    So important.
  • Not Synced
    Now, when the space station
    would go over Massachusetts,
  • Not Synced
    my family would run outside
  • Not Synced
and they would watch the brightest star
    sailing across the sky,
  • Not Synced
    and when I looked down,
    I couldn't see my house,
  • Not Synced
but it meant a lot to me to know
that the people I loved the most
  • Not Synced
were looking up while I was looking down.
  • Not Synced
So the space station, for me, is the place
where mission and magic come together.
  • Not Synced
The mission, the work are vital steps
  • Not Synced
in our quest to go further than our planet
  • Not Synced
    and imperative for understanding
    sustainability here on Earth.
  • Not Synced
I loved being a part of that,
  • Not Synced
and if I could have taken
    my family with me,
  • Not Synced
I never would have come home.
  • Not Synced
And so my view from the station showed me
  • Not Synced
that we are all from the same place.
  • Not Synced
We all have our roles to play.
  • Not Synced
Because, the Earth is our ship.
  • Not Synced
    Space is our home.
  • Not Synced
And we are the crew of Spaceship Earth.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
