  • 0:00 - 0:01
    [MUSIC PLAYING]
  • 0:01 - 0:03
    SPEAKER: Mentoring
    students with disabilities
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    in research experiences.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    RICHARD LADNER: My
    name is Richard Ladner.
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    I'm the principal investigator
    for access computing,
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    an NSF-funded project with
    the goal of increasing
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    the participation and
    success of students
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    with disabilities
    in computing fields.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    Every summer, we
    support students
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    in the Computing Research
    Association's Distributed
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    Research Experiences for
    Undergraduates program.
  • 0:27 - 0:31
    Many of these students
    continue their research
  • 0:31 - 0:33
and go on to graduate school.
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    ERIN HOWARD: Hi, everyone.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    My name is Erin Howard.
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    I use she and they
    pronouns, and I
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    am a student at Western
    Washington University.
  • 0:39 - 0:44
I applied a lot of statistical
    analysis via Python
  • 0:44 - 0:51
    to programmatically pre-classify
    over 275,000 light curves
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    from stars in the Transiting
    Exoplanet Survey Satellite
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    database.
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    EMELIA BELDON: Hi.
  • 0:57 - 1:03
My name is Emilia Beldon, and
    I am from Gallaudet University.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    The project is about
    improving live captioning
  • 1:06 - 1:10
    and teleconferencing, like
    Zoom, Hangouts, and Meet.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    When I first saw the
    project, I thought, yes,
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    what better than to help
    improve the accessibility
  • 1:16 - 1:20
    of the deaf community and
    those who need access?
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    For me, mentors were what
    helped me be successful
  • 1:23 - 1:26
in computing and the IT field.
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    They have disabilities
    themselves.
  • 1:27 - 1:31
    They can't hear, can't speak,
    but that didn't stop them
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    from being successful.
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    BRIANNA WEIMER: Hi.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    My name is Brianna Weimer,
and I am currently a student
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    at the University of Alabama.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    My disability is ADHD.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    And so just for
    me, it's helped me
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    develop a passion of
what I want to work in
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    and develop that kind of
    determination behind it.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    My project over the
    summer was basically
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    about making a
    biofeedback game that
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    increases emotional regulation
    through respiration techniques
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    and uses positive reinforcement.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    ERIN HOWARD: The advice I'd
    give to research mentors working
  • 2:03 - 2:08
    with students who
    have a disability,
  • 2:08 - 2:18
be patient and be kind of
    aware of their situation.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    EMELIA BELDON: Also, be sure
to check in with the student
  • 2:20 - 2:24
    frequently and make sure they
    have access to information
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    as well as be able
    to communicate.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    BRIANNA WIMER: Take
    your time with them.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    Allow them to open
    up to you about it.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
Don't kind of push for it.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    Just allow them to get
    close enough to you.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    Because when they do, they
    will feel comfortable enough
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    to talk to you about
    their disability
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    and talk to you
    about what they need
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    as a student with
    disability to help them.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    And then once you
    know that information,
  • 2:44 - 2:46
you can help them to the
    best of your abilities.
  • 2:46 - 2:49
