The 1 Strategy To Beat The “Pusher”

  • 0:00 - 0:03
What would it take for you to finally frustrate
  • 0:03 - 0:05
the pusher instead of the pusher frustrating you?
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    My name is Jeff Salzenstein,
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    founder of Tennis Evolution.
  • 0:09 - 0:12
And you might be struggling against the pusher.
  • 0:12 - 0:15
You may be actually using the wrong strategies,
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    but in today's video,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
I want to actually give you one
  • 0:18 - 0:21
specific strategy that you're probably not using that's going
  • 0:21 - 0:24
to be an absolute game changer for you.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
Let's get you to that video right now.
  • 0:26 - 0:27
The pusher likes to do one thing.
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    He likes to
  • 0:29 - 0:29
    stand,
  • 0:30 - 0:31
usually stand deep in the court,
  • 0:33 - 0:35
and just get the ball back.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    He'll move the ball around,
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    he'll slice and dice you,
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    he'll hit high balls,
  • 0:40 - 0:41
he'll hit deep down the middle.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
He's just trying to frustrate you,
  • 0:44 - 0:47
and what ends up happening is you end up overhitting and missing shots.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
And a lot of times, players
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    play straight ahead
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    down the middle,
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    or straight ahead
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    down the line.
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    Okay?
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    Or
  • 0:59 - 0:59
    deep,
  • 1:02 - 1:02
    deep
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    cross-court.
  • 1:05 - 1:05
    Okay,
  • 1:05 - 1:08
that seems to be the base play until eventually you miss,
  • 1:09 - 1:12
and I just don't see enough players using angle.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
Now I realize for some of you that might be
  • 1:14 - 1:17
easier said than done because you're not practicing your angles.
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    But I hope
  • 1:18 - 1:21
after watching this video, you'll see and understand
  • 1:21 - 1:24
the importance of hitting angles against the pusher.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    So, when you play deep down the middle;
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    number one,
  • 1:29 - 1:33
that's good to be patient and play down the middle till you get the right ball.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    But where it's not good
  • 1:35 - 1:37
is that you're just hitting it back to the
  • 1:37 - 1:40
pusher over and over again and you're not making him
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    or her move.
  • 1:42 - 1:46
We've got to make the pusher move a little bit at different times,
  • 1:46 - 1:46
    okay?
  • 1:46 - 1:48
Get him or her out of the comfort zone.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
So, you think about making him move.
  • 1:51 - 1:51
    Okay,
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    you start hitting cross-court deep,
  • 1:55 - 1:58
how far does the pusher have to move when you hit cross-court and deep?
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    Not that far.
  • 2:01 - 2:01
    Okay,
  • 2:01 - 2:04
he just has to take a few steps over.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
So, that's where the angle comes in.
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    When you hit angles,
  • 2:09 - 2:12
when you hit balls that go off of the single sideline
  • 2:13 - 2:13
    before
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    it hits the baseline,
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    when you do that,
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    you start to make
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    the pusher move.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
So, that ball is down the middle.
  • 2:22 - 2:23
That ball is down the middle,
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    patience,
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    and now there's a chance
  • 2:26 - 2:27
to hit this ball with angle.
  • 2:28 - 2:28
    So look,
  • 2:29 - 2:31
that ball went off at this angle here.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    Off of the single sideline,
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    like I was saying,
  • 2:35 - 2:36
    that's your goal.
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    When you're playing tennis,
  • 2:37 - 2:39
if you can get the ball to land short
  • 2:39 - 2:41
and go off of the court
  • 2:42 - 2:44
before it crosses over this baseline,
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    off of the single sideline,
  • 2:45 - 2:48
you want to get the ball going in this direction.
  • 2:48 - 2:49
If you can get that to happen,
  • 2:50 - 2:52
you're going to start beating more pushers.
  • 2:52 - 2:55
And it's usually beneficial to do this on the forehand
  • 2:55 - 2:57
side because a lot of players can hook the ball
  • 2:58 - 3:00
with their forehand easier than their backhand.
  • 3:01 - 3:02
    So, let's watch this again.
  • 3:05 - 3:06
    Rally down the middle,
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    be patient,
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    no rush whatsoever.
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    Ball's coming down the middle.
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    Now this ball right here,
  • 3:12 - 3:14
you'll notice that it's hit with more angle.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
So, Mads is on the near side here
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    has moved over
  • 3:19 - 3:21
towards the forehand corner of the court.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
He's got more angle to work with,
  • 3:23 - 3:25
so it doesn't make sense to hit an angle
  • 3:26 - 3:28
if you're standing in this part of the court.
  • 3:28 - 3:30
You can't hit as good of an angle.
  • 3:30 - 3:35
So, your goal is to wait until you get a ball that comes in this direction,
  • 3:36 - 3:36
    or in this case,
  • 3:36 - 3:37
if you're gonna hit a backhand,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
it would come in this direction,
  • 3:39 - 3:41
where you have more angle to use it.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    And at this point again,
  • 3:43 - 3:45
your goal is to hit the angle
  • 3:45 - 3:48
so that it bounces around the service line.
  • 3:48 - 3:49
    We want the service line.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
We do not want the baseline.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    If you aim deep cross-court,
  • 3:53 - 3:54
    like I said before,
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    you're not making
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    the pusher move very far.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
But when you hit the angle,
  • 4:00 - 4:02
he's going to have to move
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    this far.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
That's a good distance to have to cover.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
And not only does he have to move across,
  • 4:08 - 4:09
    but in many cases,
  • 4:09 - 4:12
he's going to have to move up a little bit.
  • 4:12 - 4:13
    So, it's a double whammy.
  • 4:14 - 4:18
Lots of advantages to using an angle to beat the pusher,
  • 4:19 - 4:22
and you have the whole court to do whatever you want on the next shot.
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    Now,
  • 4:23 - 4:23
    in my opinion,
  • 4:23 - 4:26
it's not enough just to hit forehand angles.
  • 4:26 - 4:28
You want to be able to hit backhand angles as well.
  • 4:29 - 4:29
    Now,
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    we talked about earlier,
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    how
  • 4:31 - 4:35
many times it's easier to hook the ball with the forehand off the court.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
Just easier to hit angles with forehands,
  • 4:38 - 4:39
but if you can hit angles with your backhand,
  • 4:39 - 4:41
whether you have a two-hander or one hander,
  • 4:42 - 4:44
you're going to be at a distinct advantage,
  • 4:44 - 4:46
so this is a shot you should practice.
  • 4:46 - 4:49
When you're practicing or on a ball machine,
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    get comfortable hitting backhand angles,
  • 4:51 - 4:53
it will serve you well against the pusher.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    Now let's notice this rally.
  • 4:55 - 4:57
A lot of balls being hit down the middle of the court.
  • 4:58 - 4:58
    Again,
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    we're focusing on patience,
  • 5:00 - 5:01
    playing down the middle,
  • 5:01 - 5:03
not taking a lot of risk.
  • 5:03 - 5:04
The pusher's just standing back there,
  • 5:05 - 5:06
and then when you get a little bit of angle,
  • 5:06 - 5:07
    you can hit that
  • 5:07 - 5:08
    angle backhand,
  • 5:09 - 5:10
    open up the court,
  • 5:10 - 5:11
    and win the point.
  • 5:13 - 5:13
    So,
  • 5:13 - 5:15
one reason why it's so important
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    to use the backhand angle
  • 5:18 - 5:21
is that many players have worse backhands.
  • 5:21 - 5:25
So, you'll notice that Mads is playing down the middle for two, three balls.
  • 5:25 - 5:28
And then as soon as this ball comes with angle to his backhand,
  • 5:29 - 5:31
you'll notice he has a shot to hit an angle on now.
  • 5:31 - 5:33
Look how far out he is.
  • 5:33 - 5:36
This is a perfect opportunity for him
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    to hit a sweet,
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    sweet angle over here.
  • 5:41 - 5:41
    If
  • 5:42 - 5:45
Mads had tried to hit an angle
  • 5:45 - 5:47
from this area of the court more through the middle,
  • 5:47 - 5:50
then the angle wouldn't have been as good,
  • 5:51 - 5:52
    and then it doesn't make
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    Simon move as much.
  • 5:55 - 5:58
So, it's definitely better to wait until you get your
  • 5:58 - 6:01
opponent to hit a ball actually towards the sideline,
  • 6:02 - 6:03
and as long as you're balanced,
  • 6:03 - 6:06
you do not want to hit an angle here if you're off balance.
  • 6:06 - 6:07
    But you can see
  • 6:07 - 6:09
that Mads is on his front foot,
  • 6:09 - 6:10
    so
  • 6:10 - 6:11
    he's in a position
  • 6:12 - 6:14
where he can hit an angle because he's balanced.
  • 6:14 - 6:15
He's not struggling on this ball.
  • 6:15 - 6:19
So, just keep that in mind that if you're not balanced and you're moving out wide,
  • 6:20 - 6:22
just play the ball deep cross-court or deep through
  • 6:22 - 6:24
the middle or even high down the line.
  • 6:24 - 6:26
So, now watch this angle here.
  • 6:27 - 6:28
    Lots of spin on it.
  • 6:29 - 6:30
    The ball
  • 6:30 - 6:32
    actually lands,
  • 6:32 - 6:33
the net's gonna block it a little bit,
  • 6:34 - 6:38
but the ball actually lands way inside the service box.
  • 6:38 - 6:40
So, he hit this ball like a passing shot.
  • 6:40 - 6:43
You want to think about dipping it like a passing shot,
  • 6:43 - 6:44
    even playing mini tennis.
  • 6:44 - 6:46
Sometimes, I tell my high-level students,
  • 6:47 - 6:49
"Hit a lot of spin with top spin and try to
  • 6:49 - 6:52
land it inside the service box and get that feel."
  • 6:52 - 6:54
Many players don't have the feel
  • 6:54 - 6:56
and then the ball ends up landing
  • 6:57 - 7:00
deep cross-court here and it really doesn't do a whole lot.
  • 7:00 - 7:03
So, practice landing that ball inside the service box.
  • 7:03 - 7:04
    Now,
  • 7:04 - 7:06
something else that I want to show you technically.
  • 7:07 - 7:08
    So, if we look at
  • 7:09 - 7:10
    Mads' backhand here,
  • 7:11 - 7:14
    he's got a beautiful one-hander.
  • 7:14 - 7:15
You'll notice a couple of things.
  • 7:16 - 7:16
    One,
  • 7:16 - 7:19
he's on his front foot and he's stepped across his body.
  • 7:19 - 7:21
A lot of coaches say never step across,
  • 7:21 - 7:22
    but on a one-hander,
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    it's actually quite natural
  • 7:24 - 7:25
    to step across,
  • 7:25 - 7:27
so don't worry about that too much.
  • 7:27 - 7:31
You'll also notice that his grip is pretty far over towards the backhand,
  • 7:31 - 7:33
so it's easy for him to hit topspin
  • 7:33 - 7:34
If he had a continental grip,
  • 7:35 - 7:36
this would be more difficult to hit angle,
  • 7:37 - 7:38
he might have to go to a slice here.
  • 7:39 - 7:39
    Now,
  • 7:39 - 7:40
    let's
  • 7:40 - 7:42
fast forward this one frame at a time.
  • 7:47 - 7:48
    Look at his off-hand,
  • 7:49 - 7:50
    really helping him with balance,
  • 7:50 - 7:51
    okay?
  • 7:51 - 7:54
And it really doesn't flail too far back away from his body,
  • 7:55 - 7:57
but what I really want you to notice is look at that finish.
  • 7:58 - 8:00
    Look at that finish.
  • 8:00 - 8:01
Part of it's because of the grip,
  • 8:01 - 8:02
    but you'll see
  • 8:02 - 8:06
the strings are facing in the direction of where he wants the ball to go.
  • 8:06 - 8:08
And then as this goes forward,
  • 8:08 - 8:11
look how the strings are still facing at this point,
  • 8:11 - 8:14
still facing in the direction of where he wants the ball to go,
  • 8:14 - 8:16
and he uses what I call the "French flair."
  • 8:17 - 8:19
He turns that hand over like the French do,
  • 8:19 - 8:22
and that's how he gets that added topspin.
  • 8:22 - 8:25
So, you want to add that French flair at the very end,
  • 8:25 - 8:27
    but make sure
  • 8:27 - 8:28
    when you do that,
  • 8:28 - 8:29
    that you extend first.
  • 8:29 - 8:32
A lot of players don't extend when they use that French flair.
  • 8:33 - 8:35
    So, let's go forward,
  • 8:35 - 8:35
    excuse me,
  • 8:35 - 8:36
    a little bit more.
  • 8:37 - 8:38
    Notice when
  • 8:38 - 8:40
    he finishes,
  • 8:41 - 8:42
he squares up a little bit,
  • 8:42 - 8:43
    not a lot,
  • 8:43 - 8:44
    but he squares up enough,
  • 8:45 - 8:45
    and then
  • 8:46 - 8:48
look at where the racket is still.
  • 8:48 - 8:52
The ball's about to go over the net and the racket is still in this position.
  • 8:52 - 8:54
He hasn't brought it down to the ready position yet.
  • 8:54 - 8:55
    So,
  • 8:55 - 8:57
this is an awesome position to model
  • 8:58 - 9:00
when you're wanting to hit this backhand angle.
  • 9:00 - 9:03
Just a little some technical footwork stuff that you can take a look at
  • 9:03 - 9:04
as you're trying to beat the pusher,
  • 9:05 - 9:07
you might as well know how to move and how to swing
  • 9:07 - 9:08
    as you're hitting this angle.
  • 9:09 - 9:10
And, of course, he hits a great ball here,
  • 9:10 - 9:14
and what I love about this is that remember Simon was back here
  • 9:14 - 9:19
instead of running across the court because the angle was hit so steep and short,
  • 9:19 - 9:22
he has to move up and reach for this low ball.
  • 9:22 - 9:24
I'm gonna do that arrow again.
  • 9:24 - 9:25
    He has to reach.
  • 9:26 - 9:27
    He has to move up
  • 9:30 - 9:31
It's got a mind of its own.
  • 9:31 - 9:32
    He has to move up
  • 9:32 - 9:34
    and reach for this ball.
  • 9:35 - 9:36
    And that's what we want.
  • 9:36 - 9:39
We don't want Simon to be hitting this ball in his strike zone.
  • 9:39 - 9:41
    We want him reaching down
  • 9:42 - 9:43
    to his shoelaces,
  • 9:43 - 9:44
by his shoelaces to hit that ball.
  • 9:44 - 9:45
    Look,
  • 9:45 - 9:48
That ball's dropping and he's reaching for it,
  • 9:48 - 9:51
and that's all because of the angle was hit so short.
  • 9:51 - 9:52
    He hit it so well,
  • 9:52 - 9:53
    the ball's popped up
  • 9:53 - 9:56
and now Mads can just hit the ball to the open court.
  • 9:56 - 10:00
I hope you got a lot of value out of this video lesson today.
  • 10:00 - 10:00
    And again,
  • 10:00 - 10:02
if you use this one strategy
  • 10:03 - 10:04
    to hit angles,
  • 10:04 - 10:08
to hit those angles against the pusher that's standing far behind the baseline,
  • 10:08 - 10:09
    you can completely
  • 10:09 - 10:11
    frustrate the pusher.
  • 10:11 - 10:12
So, here's what I want you to do right now.
  • 10:12 - 10:14
    If you haven't already,
