    The Simple Joy and Power
    of Detached Witnessing
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    18 February 2025
    (with subtitles)
  • 0:17 - 0:21
Q1: Guruji, I want to say thank you.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    It's ...
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    Yeah.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    I feel blessed.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    M: Yes.
  • 0:35 - 0:40
    Q1: Yeah. It's ...
  • 0:40 - 0:44
Q1: It looks like, inside the something, it's ...
  • 0:44 - 0:48
I cannot say if 'changed' is a good word,
  • 0:48 - 0:54
    but I don't know, something ...
    It's happening inside.
  • 0:54 - 0:58
    M: It's happening, something? It's good.
    Q1: Yes.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    Q1: Yeah, and ...
  • 1:05 - 1:10
    Sometimes there are hard moments,
  • 1:10 - 1:21
but something can witness the whole ...
    [checks word with friend]
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    Friend: The scene.
  • 1:23 - 1:29
Q1: The scene of the person that is suffering,
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    and it's enjoying too.
  • 1:32 - 1:37
    M: Is the witness ...
What the word witness means, actually,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    is that which is aware,
  • 1:39 - 1:43
the one who is aware of something,
    but is not involved.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    M: That's what witnessing means, isn't it?
    Q1: Yeah.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    M: That's why they call,
    'Who's the next witness?'
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    In court they ask,
    'Can the next witness come?'
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    If the next witness comes
and the court case, as I said before,
  • 1:56 - 2:01
is like, someone was walking along,
  • 2:01 - 2:04
and saw that the traffic lights come,
  • 2:04 - 2:08
    and somebody went through it
    and hit another car.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
And they came out and started fighting.
  • 2:11 - 2:15
And one man came and hit this person,
  • 2:15 - 2:19
and the person's dog came out
and bit the man and ...
  • 2:19 - 2:21
And then it all goes to court.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
Then they ask, 'Can we have a witness?'
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    So witness number one comes,
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    And they say,
'Please tell us. Where were you?'
  • 2:29 - 2:32
'We were standing by the traffic lights,
    Your Honour.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
And I saw this red car come
    and hit the blue car.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
I saw this man come over
    and he hit this lady.'
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    'And then what happened?'
  • 2:43 - 2:47
'Then the dog came out of the car.'
  • 2:47 - 2:49
'Was the dog tied up in the car?'
  • 2:49 - 2:53
'No, the lady opened the door of the car,
  • 2:53 - 2:56
the dog came out, and bit the man.'
  • 2:56 - 3:01
    'OK. And then what?'
  • 3:01 - 3:04
'Well, I thought it was a bit one-on-one before,
  • 3:04 - 3:09
now with the dog it was too much.
So I went in and I grabbed the dog.'
  • 3:09 - 3:12
He said, 'But you're no longer a witness,
  • 3:12 - 3:14
because you're part of the crime scene!'
  • 3:14 - 3:18
    'Witness number two!' ...
    'Where were you standing?'
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    'Actually, I was standing
on the other side of the road.
  • 3:21 - 3:25
    I saw this man came,
and I heard what he said, also.'
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    'So then what happened?'
  • 3:27 - 3:30
'Then I saw this man interfering.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
I said, "Come on, leave the people alone.
  • 3:33 - 3:35
It's nothing to do with you."
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    He said, "Who are you?"
And I said, "I'm also just looking".
  • 3:38 - 3:42
And he hit me in the face
and I kicked him in the nuts.'
  • 3:42 - 3:44
'But you are not a witness.
  • 3:44 - 3:49
You are also part of the crime scene.'
    So who is the witness?
  • 3:49 - 3:55
You cannot really be the witness
if you get involved in that way.
  • 3:55 - 4:00
Because the minute you get involved,
    the witnessing is compromised.
  • 4:00 - 4:05
Unless you say, 'Then I saw that
    something in my mind
  • 4:05 - 4:09
    was going over there,
and I was kind of watching inside myself,
  • 4:09 - 4:11
and I saw that some anger came up inside
  • 4:11 - 4:14
and I was watching all of this as well.'
  • 4:14 - 4:17
    Which court will accept that?
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    This body got involved.
  • 4:19 - 4:24
    'This body hit this person,
and held the dog, and so on,
  • 4:24 - 4:28
but myself, I was quite calm inside my mind.'
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    Who would accept that?
    [laughter]
  • 4:30 - 4:33
    Nobody would accept it.
    [laughter]
  • 4:33 - 4:39
Is such a witness plausible in our example?
  • 4:39 - 4:43
    I saw faces going, 'Hmmm'.
    [laughter]
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    Witnessing means here,
  • 4:45 - 4:49
that you are seeing your emotions coming,
  • 4:49 - 4:52
you see scenarios being created in the mind.
  • 4:52 - 4:55
You're feeling judgments coming, like this,
  • 4:55 - 4:58
but you stay detached from them.
  • 4:58 - 5:04
You see scenarios where you'd be
    strongly emotionally identified,
  • 5:04 - 5:07
but somehow, you don't log into their energy.
  • 5:07 - 5:12
    Something stays back,
and has to keep on remembering,
  • 5:12 - 5:14
'That I'm just here as a witness.
  • 5:14 - 5:18
    In this witnessing,
    nothing is happening to me
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    because I'm not involved.'
    You see?
  • 5:20 - 5:24
    If you're not involved,
the scene cannot go on, actually,
  • 5:24 - 5:31
    because it needs
    the involvement of the 'you',
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    which it normally gets.
  • 5:34 - 5:40
But as you keep holding the attention
    in the Self-awareness,
  • 5:40 - 5:45
    witnessing becomes Self-aware,
    rather than situation aware,
  • 5:45 - 5:48
    that's what happens.
  • 5:48 - 5:51
    First you are looking,
  • 5:51 - 5:54
    and the mind is throwing
    one story after another.
  • 5:54 - 5:59
    You feel this,
    and then you're called, 'Witness!'
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    'Detach!'
  • 6:01 - 6:05
The mind is still ... [demonstrates turmoil]
  • 6:05 - 6:08
What is that which is aware of all of this,
  • 6:08 - 6:11
    including the personal feelings?
  • 6:11 - 6:14
Say of this, 'What is this?'
  • 6:14 - 6:19
And everything begins to slow down.
  • 6:19 - 6:24
And this is every time that you look.
  • 6:24 - 6:29
    And from witnessing,
    something greater happens,
  • 6:29 - 6:32
    Self-awareness comes alive.
  • 6:32 - 6:36
    And when Self-awareness becomes alive,
  • 6:36 - 6:40
the scenes lose their magnetism for you.
  • 6:40 - 6:43
Because here there is no excitement.
  • 6:43 - 6:50
There is a spacious joy of presence!
  • 6:50 - 6:53
    But in the beginning,
    it takes tremendous effort
  • 6:53 - 6:58
to keep out of the reflex to get identified.
  • 6:58 - 7:02
    This is what I say,
  • 7:02 - 7:07
Learn to let it not be your business.
  • 7:07 - 7:10
But even the sense of the person which is ...
  • 7:10 - 7:14
If the sense of the person is not there,
    you are detached!
  • 7:14 - 7:21
    So really, watch the person!
    You see?
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    Gradually, it becomes like this.
  • 7:23 - 7:32
I would say that this is one of the most
    potent spiritual exercises!
  • 7:32 - 7:35
Because it doesn't need other support,
  • 7:35 - 7:40
just looking and clarifying, which is you.
  • 7:40 - 7:45
    You beyond 'you'.
    You beyond 'you the person'.
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    Something is here.
  • 7:47 - 7:51
    And at a certain point,
you cannot even call it 'you'.
  • 7:55 - 8:00
It's just a presence is here.
  • 8:00 - 8:04
And it's not a presence that feels,
  • 8:04 - 8:08
    'Where did you come from?'
  • 8:08 - 8:12
    It absorbs the 'I' inside
  • 8:12 - 8:14
    and it fills everything here.
  • 8:14 - 8:19
    Every cell is rejoicing,
  • 8:19 - 8:24
in a space of peace and serenity and joy.
  • 8:26 - 8:32
You may even call it love.
  • 8:32 - 8:37
And the heat of the moment is transformed.
  • 8:37 - 8:39
    It's like it's radiating.
  • 8:39 - 8:42
    It's conquering everything.
  • 8:42 - 8:44
    That is your power!
  • 8:47 - 8:50
And the more you exercise this,
  • 8:50 - 8:53
    more and more
    something feels [long slow exhale].
  • 8:53 - 8:58
The world gets off your chest.
  • 8:58 - 9:01
    It becomes like ...
  • 9:06 - 9:08
    It's as though you're cocooned.
  • 9:08 - 9:12
You're cocooned in an invisible space.
  • 9:12 - 9:16
Like a silent cocoon, and you are moving,
  • 9:16 - 9:19
    and through this cocoon
    you can shake hands,
  • 9:19 - 9:21
say, 'Hi, how are you?' And so on.
  • 9:21 - 9:25
It's like the noise [makes big engine noise]
is kind of more far away.
  • 9:25 - 9:28
    And there is a peace,
  • 9:28 - 9:32
    and a real appreciation.
  • 9:32 - 9:37
The sense of being threatened personally
    has moved away,
  • 9:37 - 9:43
and is replaced by a universal feeling
    of oneness and joy.
  • 9:43 - 9:45
    Maybe not all at once.
  • 9:45 - 9:51
Maybe all you feel is just to be here.
  • 9:51 - 9:56
But the more you give respect to that,
  • 9:56 - 10:00
    self-respect to that,
  • 10:00 - 10:05
    it's like you are charging:
    You are on Self-charge.
  • 10:05 - 10:08
    It's very good.
  • 10:08 - 10:11
    Q1: I pray every day,
  • 10:11 - 10:21
that God gives me more wisdom and strength.
  • 10:25 - 10:32
Because something can see that there is,
  • 10:32 - 10:37
    like you said before,
there is a sort of avoidance.
  • 10:37 - 10:42
    There is both.
There is avoiding, but there is the other side.
  • 10:42 - 10:45
There is love. There is ...
  • 10:45 - 10:50
    [Q1 checks words with friend]
    Friend: Desire.
  • 10:50 - 10:53
    Q1: There is desire, urge,
  • 10:53 - 10:59
    there are both sides, still.
  • 10:59 - 11:02
M: Even upon the realisation of the Self,
  • 11:02 - 11:04
the play of duality is still active.
  • 11:04 - 11:08
But it has a different tone about it.
    You know?
  • 11:08 - 11:11
We should not be surprised at that.
  • 11:11 - 11:14
Duality plays, but it has a different tone.
  • 11:14 - 11:20
When the ego force has subsided,
    then it's happening in presence.
  • 11:20 - 11:24
Then you're not experiencing the world
    through person,
  • 11:24 - 11:29
    but through presence.
  • 11:29 - 11:33
And presence is infinitely more kind
    than the person.
  • 11:33 - 11:43
    Q1: Yeah, it's less attachment
    to the ego-mind person.
  • 11:43 - 11:48
    And ...
    Thank you.
  • 11:48 - 11:57
    M: Yes, this unassociated presence
is the Guru of the world, in each one.
  • 12:01 - 12:04
Q2: Guruji, can I ask one small thing?
    M: OK.
  • 12:04 - 12:09
    Q2: ... Is it possible,
that there could be a playing in this?
  • 12:09 - 12:11
    M: Yeah.
  • 12:11 - 12:15
Q2: Is it possible that there could be
    playing in this system?
  • 12:15 - 12:19
    Just one screw, one pivot,
    where the identity is fixed.
  • 12:19 - 12:24
That there's just one thing holding,
  • 12:24 - 12:26
Q2: and when you pull that out,
  • 12:26 - 12:30
Q2: that it could just dis ...
  • 12:30 - 12:36
M: This pulling out is the seeing that
    the person is itself phenomenal.
  • 12:36 - 12:40
Because we are the presence itself,
    the beingness itself,
  • 12:40 - 12:46
that is expressing through the belief,
    'I am this body'.
  • 12:46 - 12:49
    'I'm a woman.' 'I'm a man'. 'I'm this age'.
    And so on.
  • 12:49 - 12:52
It's taking all the qualities of the body
  • 12:52 - 12:56
and claiming them to be qualities of itself.
    It is the beingness.
  • 12:56 - 13:00
    And to do that,
it takes on the identity of a person.
  • 13:00 - 13:05
When it takes on the identity of a person,
    it definitely becomes a type.
  • 13:05 - 13:08
    It becomes one amongst many.
  • 13:08 - 13:12
When it reverts back to beingness,
in the way that I'm speaking,
  • 13:12 - 13:18
    it becomes universal consciousness.
  • 13:18 - 13:25
Q2: Could there be like one belief,
    one ego belief that's ...
  • 13:25 - 13:30
M: The belief is, 'I am this'.
The belief is, 'I am this person'.
  • 13:30 - 13:33
    'I am this structure.
  • 13:33 - 13:35
    I was born here.
  • 13:35 - 13:38
This is my age.' This belief.
  • 13:38 - 13:45
    You can call it one,
based upon the body as its location.
  • 13:45 - 13:47
    'I am this.'
  • 13:47 - 13:49
    That thought alone
  • 13:49 - 13:55
    generates lifetimes
    of varied experiencing and struggle.
  • 13:58 - 14:02
Q2: So that's why you just said,
    'Do you believe it?'
  • 14:02 - 14:08
M: Yes, as long as we believe,
    and we do believe,
  • 14:08 - 14:15
it is the gasoline of the engine of personhood.
  • 14:15 - 14:18
    It goes on like that.
    And it doesn't just drop.
  • 14:18 - 14:23
Rarely. Sometimes it can just go.
  • 14:23 - 14:28
Sometimes, it's just with repeated seeing that
    it loses power, actually.
  • 14:28 - 14:35
Considering how long it may be going on for,
    it loses it very quickly.
  • 14:35 - 14:38
The natural orientation of being is to evolve.
  • 14:38 - 14:43
Evolve means to dissolve the ego.
  • 14:43 - 14:47
But where you come back to,
is never going to be a shock.
  • 14:47 - 14:52
    It's always a delight.
As when you come back, you find you're still here!
  • 14:52 - 14:57
But not with all that baggage of personhood.
  • 14:57 - 14:59
    Some traits may continue,
  • 14:59 - 15:04
but gradually, they also will just go away.
  • 15:07 - 15:11
Q2: Guruji, I do see that
much is dissolving just by itself.
  • 15:11 - 15:14
    It's just ...
There's a lot of dissolving just happening.
  • 15:14 - 15:17
Q2: And by your grace, in the last ...
  • 15:17 - 15:21
M: Don't pay too much attention to it,
    because it's tricky.
  • 15:21 - 15:24
    You're thinking now,
'Five, four, three, two, seven! Seven?
  • 15:24 - 15:27
    Six, five ... Fifteen?'
    [laughter]
  • 15:27 - 15:30
You see, don't pay too much attention to it.
  • 15:30 - 15:33
It's more that whatever it is,
    it is seen.
  • 15:33 - 15:40
    And if it is seen,
that which sees is not a number.
  • 15:40 - 15:44
Don't give any shape to that.
Don't give a shape to that.
  • 15:44 - 15:47
If you give a shape to that,
    it becomes an entity.
  • 15:47 - 15:49
The Self is not an entity.
  • 15:49 - 15:55
    It's pure consciousness, pure awareness.
  • 15:55 - 15:59
    Limitless.
  • 15:59 - 16:02
For the human expression of consciousness
  • 16:02 - 16:06
to awaken to this is rare, rare.
  • 16:06 - 16:10
    And yet, each is that!
  • 16:12 - 16:15
And we are here for this.
  • 16:15 - 16:19
Or at least from my standpoint,
    we are here for this!
  • 16:19 - 16:22
    But ...
The ego mind doesn't just give up and say,
  • 16:22 - 16:25
'Okay, so now you're going there.
    Okay, I'll leave you.'
  • 16:25 - 16:28
    No, you stay with it.
    It doesn't matter how long.
  • 16:28 - 16:32
'Oh, you've been left for hundreds of ...'
    It doesn't matter.
  • 16:32 - 16:35
    It doesn't matter.
    It doesn't matter.
  • 16:42 - 16:47
    Om
    Thank you, thank you.
  • 16:47 - 16:53
    Lord of this universe,
  • 16:53 - 16:57
shining inside the heart of each one,
  • 16:57 - 17:02
as that vibration, that intuition, 'I Am'.
  • 17:02 - 17:09
Know that to be the embodied Self.
  • 17:13 - 17:15
    And this embodied Self
  • 17:15 - 17:24
    comes out from the Parabrahman,
    the Supreme.
  • 17:24 - 17:27
    M: Amen.
    Group: Amen.
  • 17:27 - 17:30
    [silence]
  • 17:47 - 17:52
I would just like to close today
    with this blessing
  • 17:52 - 17:57
    that in whichever heart
    feels a response to this,
  • 17:57 - 18:01
without having to go to the mind
    for any self-reference.
  • 18:01 - 18:06
    If your feeling is,
'I may not grasp everything here,
  • 18:06 - 18:10
but I open my heart to faith
  • 18:10 - 18:16
and to receive the grace that
has brought me to this very point.'
  • 18:16 - 18:19
Take the darshan of God's grace.
  • 18:19 - 18:22
So be it. So be it.
  • 18:22 - 18:28
    Om. Hallelujah. Alhamdulillah. Amen.
  • 18:28 - 18:32
    M: Thank you.
    Group: Thank you.
