    <Fulfilling My Late Grandfather's Wish>
  • 0:09 - 0:13
    (Questioner) Hi Ven. Pomnyun Sunim
Thank you so much for coming again.
  • 0:13 - 0:21
I have a question about something,
I have wanted to do for a very long time.
  • 0:21 - 0:27
My grandfather and my father are
    from North Korea.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    My grandfather has long passed.
  • 0:30 - 0:38
He had dying wish to go to North Korea,
pay his respects to his mother's grave.
  • 0:38 - 0:46
My father tried to help my grandfather
    do that by suggesting.
  • 0:46 - 0:51
My grandfather come to the United States,
and then they have to go through China.
  • 0:51 - 0:56
    My grandfather said,
"Absolutely not. I want to go straight."
  • 0:56 - 1:03
From where he lived at the time in Seoul,
go up to Sinuiju, which is the town.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
A journey he was never able to make.
  • 1:06 - 1:14
I grew up in this country, but my parents
didn’t tell me much about Korea.
  • 1:14 - 1:20
I grew up wanting to learn more about it
    and about my family.
  • 1:20 - 1:31
Only my father's father, from that side
of the family made it to South Korea.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
    I don’t have any relatives
    from my father’s side.
  • 1:35 - 1:43
My mother was an only child,
so I have no relatives on her side either.
  • 1:43 - 1:47
I work in the film industry.
  • 1:47 - 1:54
When I was in college, I received a grant
to record my grandfather’s oral history.
  • 1:54 - 2:00
The story of their running from N. Korea
to South Korea during the Korean War.
  • 2:00 - 2:08
I have long held this hope. Someday, I
would be able to go to North Korea.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    Somehow find
    my great grandmother's grave.
  • 2:11 - 2:15
    Pay my respects even though
    my grandfather could not.
  • 2:15 - 2:23
Of course, I know, it's very difficult
for Americans to go to North Korea.
  • 2:23 - 2:29
I also know in the context of just
everything that's happening in the world.
  • 2:29 - 2:36
    My responsibilities as a mother
and my desire to work on sustainability.
  • 2:36 - 2:47
I wonder if my attachment to want to go
and fulfill this dream is foolish.
  • 2:47 - 2:53
Within the context of all the politics.
Every time I say something to my parents
  • 2:53 - 2:56
about how I want to go to
    North Korea or South Korea
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    They're just like,
"Oh, it's so dangerous don't go."
  • 2:58 - 3:04
    I'm just curious Sunim,
how you would advise me? Thank you.
  • 3:04 - 3:22
    (Sunim) We live sometimes
    we fulfill our goals.
  • 3:22 - 3:28
Of course, not all our desires come true.
  • 3:28 - 3:40
Perhaps, we actually don't get our way
more often than we get our way.
  • 3:40 - 3:49
At the same time, we also cannot satisfy
    others' desires of us.
  • 3:49 - 3:55
This is the realities of our lives.
  • 3:55 - 4:04
If you accept the reality of our lives
    that go on this way.
  • 4:04 - 4:06
There is no cause for suffering.
  • 4:06 - 4:12
We often kind of mistake ourselves.
  • 4:12 - 4:23
We often attached to that idea,
all our dreams, desires should come true.
  • 4:23 - 4:32
    We predecide
that all our goals should be achieved.
  • 4:32 - 4:38
    That's why we get disappointed
    which leads to suffering
  • 4:38 - 4:40
when some of them don't come true.
  • 4:40 - 4:55
    You're not suffering
just because your desire didn't come true.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
    You're suffering,
    because you have this expectation.
  • 4:58 - 5:01
All your goals should be achieved
and your desire should come true.
  • 5:01 - 5:11
If we make an effort to achieve our goals
if it does come true then that's great.
  • 5:11 - 5:17
If it doesn't, that's also okay
    because it happens so often.
  • 5:17 - 5:26
If you want to achieve it,
    try again, then try again
  • 5:26 - 5:35
    Take lessons learned from your
previous failure and adjust your strategy.
  • 5:35 - 5:39
    You can always stop quit
  • 5:39 - 5:46
If you try again with different strategy,
    it might happen.
  • 5:46 - 5:50
But, then again, it might not.
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    You can quit.
  • 5:53 - 6:01
If you still want to achieve that goal,
    then you try again.
  • 6:01 - 6:03
    Adjust again,
    strategies again and try again.
  • 6:03 - 6:06
    That's our lives.
  • 6:06 - 6:10
Why does that lead to suffering?
  • 6:10 - 6:31
The suffering happens because we expect
to achieve something once or twice
  • 6:31 - 6:35
    when it should really take
10 attempts to actually get there.
  • 6:35 - 6:48
We want to achieve that results faster
based on the little effort that we put in.
  • 6:48 - 6:58
It's not the failure to achieve
    your goals that causes suffering.
  • 6:58 - 7:02
    It's the expectation
that you should achieve your goals.
  • 7:02 - 7:11
The same thing with the desires
    that others have for us.
  • 7:11 - 7:20
There are often times we suffer
because we were not able to satisfy
  • 7:20 - 7:26
what our parents wish of us or
satisfy what our children expect of us.
  • 7:26 - 7:44
We often suffer because we think,
    we disappointed our parents,
  • 7:44 - 7:49
our family members by not being able to
    fulfill their desires of us.
  • 7:49 - 7:53
But then again, we can't fulfill
    everybody's expectations of us.
  • 7:53 - 8:01
We suffer because we mistake into thinking
  • 8:01 - 8:05
    that we can actually fulfill
all of our other desires of us.
  • 8:05 - 8:09
    We overestimate ourselves.
  • 8:09 - 8:17
We're not this all powerful being,
    can actually grant everybody's wishes.
  • 8:17 - 8:21
    If we can, let's do.
  • 8:21 - 8:27
If we can't, we just apologize and, go on
  • 8:27 - 8:32
    You're not apologizing
    because you did something wrong.
  • 8:32 - 8:41
    We're apologizing
    because that in their shoes.
  • 8:41 - 8:46
    We're not able to fulfill,
    what they want of us.
  • 8:46 - 9:04
    To summarize basically,
sometimes our dreams, our goals come true.
  • 9:04 - 9:09
    Sometimes they don't.
We can actually satisfy others' desire of us.
  • 9:09 - 9:15
Sometimes we can't. The fact that's life
shouldn’t be a cause for suffering.
  • 9:15 - 9:20
    Going back to your question.
  • 9:20 - 9:29
    Grandfather wanted to go back
where he was born in North Korea,
  • 9:29 - 9:33
    and pay his respects
    to his mother's grave.
  • 9:33 - 9:46
He wasn't able to go back to North Korea
due to the geopolitics of the region.
  • 9:46 - 9:58
He asked his son in my stead,
  • 9:58 - 10:03
    "Can you go back and
pay your respects to your grandmother?"
  • 10:03 - 10:18
Due to the prevailing geopolitics of
    the day that continues.
  • 10:18 - 10:20
    He wasn't able to
    fulfill that wish either
  • 10:20 - 10:24
    That it's not great suffering
  • 10:24 - 10:30
    It's just the fact that,
    it wasn't possible to achieve.
  • 10:30 - 10:40
    You take that wish that
    you have inherited and say,
  • 10:40 - 10:45
"What it's going to be tough to do
so I can't do it" and that's okay.
  • 10:45 - 10:57
If you really want to fulfill,
your grandfather's wish, then you can try.
  • 10:57 - 11:01
Maybe I'll come to you maybe you won't.
  • 11:01 - 11:09
    All you can do is
try your best if you want to do it
  • 11:09 - 11:14
I am saying that should not
    lead to any suffering.
  • 11:14 - 11:22
This is not a matter of issue of you
    being foolish or wise.
  • 11:22 - 11:30
If you feel burdened by this
    then that is foolish.
  • 11:30 - 11:42
But to have this as your aspiration,
    I think it's a good thing.
  • 11:42 - 11:51
    Because there's nothing that tells
you have to have this aspiration or not.
  • 11:51 - 11:55
    That's really your choice.
  • 11:55 - 12:11
    Basically, my recommendation is
    do what you want.
