Adding Decimals

  • 0:01 - 0:05
Welcome to the presentation on adding decimals.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    Let's do some problems.
  • 0:07 - 0:22
So let's say I had point zero zero eight-- that's an eight-- five plus--
  • 0:22 - 0:33
and I'm writing it side by side on purpose-- one point seven nine nine.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    So at first you're like,
  • 0:35 - 0:38
these decimals, they confuse me, I give up.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
But I'm going to show you that it's actually very staightforward
  • 0:40 - 0:44
and it's actually no more difficult than doing normal addition.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
And there's only one thing you have to think about
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    when you do decimals.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
You have to line up the decimal points.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
So let's start with the first number
  • 0:52 - 0:55
and let's rewrite it so that we can actually do the math.
  • 0:55 - 1:02
    Point zero zero eight five.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    Now for the second number
  • 1:04 - 1:09
let's put the decimal point right below where that first decimal is on the top number,
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    and then rewrite the number.
  • 1:10 - 1:18
So it's one point seven nine nine.
  • 1:18 - 1:22
So all we did is we just rewrote both numbers with their decimal points lined up.
  • 1:22 - 1:23
And we could've flipped them around.
  • 1:23 - 1:28
We could've written the one point seven nine nine first and the point zero zero eight five below it.
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    What's key--
  • 1:29 - 1:31
and if you get this point and you already know how to do addition,
  • 1:31 - 1:34
you've already figured out how to do adding decimals--
  • 1:34 - 1:36
is that you line up the decimal points.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
So once you line up the decimal points
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    we're ready to start adding.
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    But hey Sal,
  • 1:42 - 1:45
there's something very strange here you might say.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
How can I add this five to a nothing?
  • 1:47 - 1:49
Well there's a very easy solution to that.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
Let's just put a zero right here.
  • 1:51 - 1:52
And how can I do that?
  • 1:52 - 1:56
How can I just randomly augment a number with a zero?
  • 1:56 - 1:59
Well, I don't know if I've already shown you in another module,
  • 1:59 - 2:02
but when you add trailing zeros to decimals,
  • 2:02 - 2:04
it doesn't really change the value of the decimal.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
And I think that make sense to you.
  • 2:06 - 2:11
If I said one point one zero, that that's the same thing as one point one.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
Which is the same thing as one point one zero zero.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
It's all one and one tenth.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
And these zeros just kind of add extra digits of precision,
  • 2:19 - 2:21
which actually, don't change the actual value.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
And maybe later when I'm teaching computer programming and computation,
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    the precision might matter.
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    But for now, it doesn't.
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    It's just the value.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
So I added this zero here and you can always do that.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    You can add trailing zeros
  • 2:31 - 2:33
without actually changing the value of the number.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
And now we're really ready to add.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    Five plus zero is five.
  • 2:38 - 2:43
    Eight plus nine is seventeen.
  • 2:43 - 2:47
One plus zero plus nine is ten.
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    Carry the one.
  • 2:48 - 2:53
One plus zero plus seven is eight.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
And then bring down this one
  • 2:55 - 2:57
because there's nothing to add it to.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
And we could have even added a leading zero here if you wanted to.
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    My wife's a doctor
  • 3:01 - 3:03
and she says it's key that you always add that leading zero
  • 3:03 - 3:05
so that no one gives someone the wrong amount of medicine.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
But anyway, so now we are almost done.
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    We've done the addition,
  • 3:09 - 3:10
and now we just have to figure out where to put the decimal point.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
Well, the decimal point just drops straight down.
  • 3:14 - 3:15
And we're able to do that
  • 3:15 - 3:17
because we already lined up the decimal points.
  • 3:17 - 3:21
So the answer to this problem is one point eight zero seven five.
  • 3:21 - 3:25
It seems complicated, but all you have to do,
  • 3:25 - 3:30
is line up the decimal points, add zeros where appropriate, and add.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
And if you know how to add you already know how to do this.
  • 3:32 - 3:37
    Let's do another problem.
  • 3:37 - 3:49
Fifty-eight point seven five plus point zero two eight.
  • 3:49 - 3:53
Now if you saw a problem like this, written in this format,
  • 3:53 - 3:55
your temptation might be to immediately start adding.
  • 3:55 - 3:59
Add the five to the eight, the seven to the two, the eight to the zero.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
And then just bring down the five or something of that nature.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    And you would be wrong.
  • 4:04 - 4:05
And I think you realize why you'd be wrong.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
Because you forgot the first step.
  • 4:07 - 4:09
The first step is line up the decimal points.
  • 4:09 - 4:12
When you're doing addition with decimals,
  • 4:12 - 4:15
the number one step is line up the decimal points.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
So let's line up the decimal points.
  • 4:17 - 4:20
So we can just rewrite that top number again.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    Fifty-eight point seven five.
  • 4:23 - 4:25
And now let's rewrite the bottom number
  • 4:25 - 4:27
so that the decimal points line up.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
So we'll put the decimal points right below it.
  • 4:29 - 4:34
And it's point zero two eight.
  • 4:34 - 4:38
    And now we can add.
  • 4:38 - 4:39
And just like before you might say,
  • 4:39 - 4:41
how can I add nothing to this eight?
  • 4:41 - 4:43
We can add a trailing zero to this top number
  • 4:43 - 4:46
because it really doesn't change the value of the number
  • 4:46 - 4:47
and now it kind of gives us a sense of security.
  • 4:47 - 4:50
We have something to add to the eight.
  • 4:50 - 4:51
    So let's do that.
  • 4:51 - 4:54
    Zero plus eight is eight.
  • 4:54 - 4:57
    Five plus two is seven.
  • 4:57 - 5:01
    Seven plus zero is seven.
  • 5:01 - 5:05
Eight plus blank space is eight.
  • 5:05 - 5:06
And we could have added a zero there,
  • 5:06 - 5:07
and it would've been the same thing.
  • 5:07 - 5:08
    Having the leading zero,
  • 5:08 - 5:11
we wouldn't have given someone the wrong amount of medicine.
  • 5:11 - 5:14
Five plus blank space is five.
  • 5:14 - 5:18
And we just drop down that decimal point, and we're done.
  • 5:18 - 5:19
    It's that straightforward.
  • 5:19 - 5:21
You line up the decimal points,
  • 5:21 - 5:24
add any zeros that might make you feel more comfortable,
  • 5:24 - 5:29
because it's often more comfortable to add to a zero than to add to a blank space.
  • 5:29 - 5:30
And then you do your addition
  • 5:30 - 5:31
and then you drop down the decimal point.
  • 5:31 - 5:34
The answer is fifty-eight point seven seven eight.
  • 5:34 - 5:37
And it's always good to kind of do a reality check.
  • 5:37 - 5:39
To say, well, does my answer make sense?
  • 5:39 - 5:45
I have fifty-eight point seven five, so roughly fifty-eight, almost fifty-nine.
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    Fifty-eight and three fourths.
  • 5:46 - 5:48
And I'm adding a very small number to it.
  • 5:48 - 5:51
I'm adding point zero two eight.
  • 5:51 - 5:55
So my answer shouldn't change much
  • 5:55 - 5:57
I guess is the way that you could view it.
  • 5:57 - 5:59
It should still be around fifty-eight something,
  • 5:59 - 6:02
because I'm only adding a very small amount.
  • 6:02 - 6:03
If you had done it this way,
  • 6:03 - 6:06
and you had just started adding immediately,
  • 6:06 - 6:09
you would have gotten fifty-nine point something.
  • 6:09 - 6:12
And you're like, boy, but I only added point zero two eight not point two eight.
  • 6:12 - 6:15
And you would've been a little bit suspicious of your answer.
  • 6:15 - 6:16
    I hope I didn't confuse you,
  • 6:16 - 6:20
but it's really healthy to always think about the magnitude of your numbers
  • 6:20 - 6:23
and get a feel for just what you are adding
  • 6:23 - 6:26
and not always do it purely mechanical.
  • 6:26 - 6:30
Although sometimes it is fun just to chug through things.
  • 6:30 - 6:34
Now let's do one more problem just for good measure.
  • 6:34 - 6:39
I have some time left on the video.
  • 6:39 - 6:48
One hundred two point one plus two point five six.
  • 6:48 - 6:49
So once again, think about magnitude.
  • 6:49 - 6:52
One hundred two point one plus two point five six,
  • 6:52 - 6:55
that should be like one hundred four point something.
  • 6:55 - 6:56
I won't do it in my head.
  • 6:56 - 6:58
    We'll do it on paper.
  • 6:58 - 6:59
So first thing, we line up the decimal points.
  • 6:59 - 7:09
One hundred two point one plus-- line up the decimal points-- two point five six.
  • 7:09 - 7:11
Now we could add a trailing zero here and we're ready to add.
  • 7:11 - 7:14
    Zero plus six is six.
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    One plus five is six.
  • 7:16 - 7:18
    Two plus two is four.
  • 7:18 - 7:20
    Zero plus nothing is zero.
  • 7:20 - 7:23
    One plus nothing is one.
  • 7:23 - 7:24
    Bring down that decimal point.
  • 7:24 - 7:26
    One hundred four point sixty-six.
  • 7:26 - 7:27
    It was that easy.
  • 7:27 - 7:28
    Hopefully it's easy.
  • 7:28 - 7:31
I don't want to make you think that it's easy if you're finding it hard
  • 7:31 - 7:34
because it actually is hard the first time you do it.
  • 7:34 - 7:34
    But anyway,
  • 7:34 - 7:38
I think you're ready now to try the module on adding decimals.
  • 7:38 - 7:40
    I hope you have fun!
