Covalent Bonding Problem Solving Session

  • 0:01 - 0:05
    >In this video, we're going to
    practice drawing covalent bonds,
  • 0:05 - 0:08
    so we're going to practice
    drawing Lewis structures.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    Lewis structures...
  • 0:10 - 0:14
    ...and we need Lewis structures
    when we form covalent bonds.
  • 0:14 - 0:19
    So reminder, if I have
    all over here, my nonmetals,
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    plus a nonmetal,
  • 0:20 - 0:23
the the type of bond, the thing
that holds those two atoms together
  • 0:23 - 0:26
is going to be called a covalent bond.
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    Okay, so let's get started.
  • 0:29 - 0:34
    All of these examples,
my very first element is a group 4,
  • 0:34 - 0:38
so I find my group 4,
that's over on the right side,
  • 0:38 - 0:42
and I have four valence electrons,
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    and it forms four bonds.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
So carbon has four valence electrons.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    (You can picture it
    like this if you'd like.)
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    It has four valence electrons,
and to get to the eight,
  • 0:51 - 0:54
it needs to form four bonds.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
Okay, and the same thing for Si,
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    the same thing--
  • 0:59 - 1:09
    [spoken audio stops,
but changes on the screen continue]
