What do you really want? | Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh | #mindfulness

  • 0:05 - 0:11
We know that in our modern time,
    we work very hard.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    Everyone is working very hard,
  • 0:17 - 0:29
and we do not have the time to take care of
our body, our feelings, our emotions.
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    We do not have enough
    peace and happiness in us.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
And we do not know how,
even if we have the time,
  • 0:44 - 0:54
we do not know how to handle our body,
    our feelings, our emotions.
  • 0:57 - 1:05
    There is suffering inside,
    there is conflict inside.
  • 1:08 - 1:15
And there may be some loneliness inside.
  • 1:17 - 1:24
And most of us do not want
    to go home to ourselves,
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    because we feel
that if we go home to ourselves,
  • 1:29 - 1:37
we will encounter the blocks of pain,
    and suffering, and loneliness inside.
  • 1:43 - 1:48
    So the tendency is
    to run away from ourselves,
  • 1:50 - 1:54
    and that is a characteristic
    of our civilization.
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    People feel the need
    to run away from themselves
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    because they don't want
    to be with themselves.
  • 2:06 - 2:10
    Because they have the fear
that if they go back to themselves,
  • 2:10 - 2:15
    they'll be overwhelmed by suffering,
  • 2:16 - 2:22
by the despair, by the anger,
by the loneliness inside of them.
  • 2:25 - 2:30
    We are running from ourselves,
    away from ourselves.
  • 2:31 - 2:37
So we do not have the time
    to take care of ourselves.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
And if you are not able
    to take care of yourself,
  • 2:41 - 2:46
how can you take care of
the person you love, your family?
  • 2:50 - 2:54
    So not only are we
    running away from ourselves,
  • 2:54 - 2:58
but we are also running away
    from our families and friends.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    We let them down.
  • 3:04 - 3:11
At the same time, we do not have the time
to go back to nature, to Mother Earth.
  • 3:14 - 3:20
Mother Earth has the capacity of
    nourishing and healing.
  • 3:22 - 3:25
But we are running away from her,
  • 3:26 - 3:31
and we may cause damage to nature
  • 3:32 - 3:37
    with our technology.
  • 3:42 - 3:50
You want to be number one,
and you want to be happy at the same time.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
But if you want to be number one,
  • 3:53 - 3:59
    you have to devote
all your time to your work,
  • 4:02 - 4:06
    sacrificing family and self.
  • 4:08 - 4:09
Do you want to be number one?
  • 4:12 - 4:17
    To be number one,
    you have to sacrifice happiness.
  • 4:18 - 4:23
But what is the use of being number one
    without happiness?
  • 4:25 - 4:31
So we have to ask ourselves the question,
    "What do we really want?"
  • 4:32 - 4:39
    Do we want happiness,
or do we want success to be number one?
