What do you really want? | Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh | #mindfulness

  • 0:05 - 0:11
We know that in our modern time, we work very hard.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    Everyone is working very hard,
  • 0:17 - 0:30
and we do not have the time to take care of our body, our feelings, or our emotions.
  • 0:32 - 0:37
We do not have enough peace and happiness within us.
  • 0:39 - 0:56
And we do not know, even if we had time, we do not know how to
handle our body, our feelings, or our emotions.
  • 0:57 - 1:07
There is suffering and conflict inside.
  • 1:08 - 1:16
And there may be some loneliness inside.
  • 1:17 - 1:26
Most of us do not want to go home to ourselves,
  • 1:26 - 1:39
because we feel that if we do, we will encounter the blocks of pain, suffering, and loneliness inside.
  • 1:43 - 1:55
So the tendency is to run away from ourselves, and that is a characteristic of our civilization.
  • 1:55 - 2:07
People feel the need to run away from themselves because they don't want to be with themselves.
  • 2:07 - 2:24
Because they have the fear that if they go back to themselves, they will be overwhelmed by
the suffering, despair, anger, and loneliness inside.
  • 2:25 - 2:31
We are running away from ourselves. Away from ourselves.
  • 2:31 - 2:38
So we do not have the time to take care of ourselves.
  • 2:38 - 2:48
If you are not able to take care of yourself, how can you take care of the person you love, your family?
  • 2:50 - 3:01
So not only are we running away from ourselves, but we are also running away from our families and friends.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    We let them down.
  • 3:04 - 3:12
At the same time, we do not have the time to go back to nature, to Mother Earth.
  • 3:14 - 3:22
Mother Earth has the capacity for nourishing and healing.
  • 3:22 - 3:39
But we are running away from her, and we may cause damage to nature with our technology.
  • 3:42 - 3:51
You want to be number one, and you want to be happy at the same time.
  • 3:51 - 4:12
But if you want to be number one, you have to devote all your time to your work, sacrificing family and self.
  • 4:12 - 4:17
To be number one, you have to sacrifice happiness.
  • 4:18 - 4:24
But what is the use of being number one without happiness?
  • 4:25 - 4:32
So we have to ask ourselves the question, "What do we really want?"
  • 4:32 - 4:41
Do we want happiness, or do we want success to be number one?
