Converting decimals to fractions example 3 | Decimals | Pre-Algebra | Khan Academy

  • 0:01 - 0:08
    Let's see if we can
    write 0.36 as a fraction.
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    There are several
    ways of doing it.
  • 0:09 - 0:13
The way I like to do it
    is to say, well, 0.36,
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    this is the same thing
    as 36 hundredths.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    Or one way to think
    about it is this
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    is in the hundredths place.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    This is in the
    tens place, or you
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    could view this
    as 30 hundredths.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
You could view this as 3
    tens, or 30 hundredths.
  • 0:30 - 0:34
So we could say that this is
the same thing as 36 hundredths,
  • 0:34 - 0:38
or this is equal to 36/100.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    And we've already
    expressed it as a fraction,
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    but now we could
    actually simplify it
  • 0:42 - 0:46
    because both 36 and 100
    have some common factors.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    They're both divisible
    by, well, looks
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    like they're both
    divisible by 4.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    So if we could
    divide the numerator
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    by 4 and the
    denominator by 4, we're
  • 0:55 - 0:56
doing the same thing to both.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    So we're not changing the
    value of the fraction.
  • 0:58 - 1:04
    36 divided by 4 is 9, and
    then 100 divided by 4 is 25.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    And now these two
    characters don't
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    seem to share any
    other common factors.
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    And so we've written
    it in simplified form,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    and we're done.
