The Real Assassin's Creed: Deadliest Special Forces Of The Dark Ages | Ancient Black Ops | Chronicle

  • 0:07 - 0:11
They are the deadliest special forces
    in the Medieval World.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    Their symbol is the dagger.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
Experts in disguise, masters of stealth,
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    they strike out of nowhere.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
They made themselves appear like ghosts.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
They would come in, stabbed, disappear.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    Terror is their greatest weapon.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    Psychological warfare it's about
    the impact that you have.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
This is the story of how a tiny community
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    takes on the most
    feared warlords of their day.
  • 0:46 - 0:50
    They were a small marginalized
    persecuted sect.
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    They would become a legend.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    The first true assassins.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    100 miles north of Jerusalem
    lies the port of Tyre.
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    In the 12th century
    it is a crusader stronghold.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    Its ruler, Conrad of Montferrat
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    is about to become
the most powerful man in the Holy Land.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    the Crusader King.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    That night, Conrad
    is returning home from dinner.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    He's going along a particularly
    narrow street.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
There's two men sat one on either side.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    He believes they are monks,
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    trusted members of his household.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
But Conrad is about to fall victim
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    to the most feared
black ops force of his time,
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    the legendary Assassins.
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    The origins of the Assassins
    lie hundreds of miles away,
  • 3:01 - 3:02
    from the Holy Land.
  • 3:02 - 3:07
In 11th century Persia the country
    we now know as Iran.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
The Islamic world is torn apart
  • 3:15 - 3:19
    by the age-old struggle
    between Sunni and Shiite Muslims.
  • 3:22 - 3:26
It's a division about who follows
    the truest Islamic tradition.
  • 3:28 - 3:32
The Sunni believe that they are
the rightful preservers of that tradition.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
They're the party of the community.
  • 3:39 - 3:42
    Their rivals,the Shiites,
    support a different tradition.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    They take its authority
    from the prophet Muhammad's descendants.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
The followers of Ali, the son-in-law
and the cousin of the Prophet
  • 3:53 - 3:57
say that the imams, the political
    religious leaders of their faith
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    should descend from him.
  • 4:03 - 4:08
Even today this rivalry within Islam
    fuels bitter religious conflicts.
  • 4:15 - 4:21
In a remote area of Northern Persia
is the mountain fortress of Alamut,
  • 4:27 - 4:33
It is here that a particular Shiite community,
    the ismaelis, takes refuge.
  • 4:36 - 4:41
    There were a small marginalized
    persecuted sect of Islam
  • 4:41 - 4:45
at a time when it was extremely unhealthy
to be any of those things.
  • 4:49 - 4:53
Their base is known as the Eagle's Nest.
  • 4:54 - 4:57
Alamut itself is a natural fortress.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
it's not like a crusader castle
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    that's built with a tremendous
    amount of science
  • 5:02 - 5:06
but it sits atop a natural redoubt
that's 300 ft almost like a sheer cliff
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    and at the bottom,
    you got very deep gorges,
  • 5:10 - 5:12
it's very, very difficult to approach.
  • 5:18 - 5:25
The leader of this small remote community
is Hasan i-Sabbah, a charismatic man
  • 5:26 - 5:30
    who demands total devotion
    from his followers.
  • 5:32 - 5:34
One wonders if he had a rather magnetic
  • 5:34 - 5:37
    or perhaps hypnotic personality
    about him as well
  • 5:37 - 5:39
to draw these people to him
  • 5:39 - 5:41
despite the fact that he's actually
    asking them
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    to submit to a very,
    very harsh regime indeed.
  • 5:48 - 5:52
    Hassan's Ismailis are facing
    overwhelming odds.
  • 5:53 - 5:57
His Sunni enemies have a vast army
    of 300,000 men.
  • 5:59 - 6:03
He will have to wage what we now call
    asymmetric warfare.
  • 6:06 - 6:08
He's not in a position to fight back.
  • 6:08 - 6:11
He's not got large armies at his disposal.
  • 6:14 - 6:18
To survive, Hasan has to find
    something he can do
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    even with limited manpower.
  • 6:25 - 6:28
Finally, he hits on a radical solution.
  • 6:30 - 6:35
He will decapitate his Sunni enemies,
    by murdering their leader.
  • 6:37 - 6:40
They're not going to be able
    to defeat him in battle
  • 6:40 - 6:42
so, they go in on a much narrower front.
  • 6:42 - 6:45
they're going to take out the man himself.
  • 6:49 - 6:52
At the top of the Persian hierarchy,
  • 6:52 - 6:56
    Nizam al-Mulk is a champion
    of Sunni Orthodoxy
  • 7:02 - 7:03
It is basically a one-man government
  • 7:03 - 7:07
and he has made it his work
    to root out heresy
  • 7:07 - 7:11
right at the center of the Persian State.
  • 7:13 - 7:17
    Hasan's Ismailis
are one of his prime targets.
  • 7:19 - 7:22
    He has described them
    as the puss of sedition.
  • 7:22 - 7:25
He really thinks they should be expelled
  • 7:25 - 7:28
so, if Hassan picks him out
    and if he removes him,
  • 7:28 - 7:31
he really will be striking a blow
    against the man
  • 7:31 - 7:34
    who is the real cheerleader
    against his group.
  • 7:40 - 7:45
Hasan starts to train an elite squad
    to carry out the mission.
  • 7:45 - 7:48
    They're chosen
    from his most devoted followers.
  • 7:48 - 7:50
    the Fedayeen.
  • 7:53 - 8:00
The early Fedayeen were almost certainly
from that particular area of Iran.
  • 8:01 - 8:04
So, these are tough mountain men.
  • 8:06 - 8:09
    Hasan begins by teaching them
how to fight at close quarters.
  • 8:11 - 8:14
    Their actual personal skills
are in many ways much higher
  • 8:14 - 8:17
than you find in armies today.
  • 8:17 - 8:20
So, commandos won't be so well trained
    in individual hand-to-hand combat
  • 8:21 - 8:22
    because they have technology
  • 8:22 - 8:24
    people today rely on technology.
  • 8:24 - 8:28
    Then they had no technology,
it was just them, they were the weapon.
  • 8:29 - 8:34
The key question is how to make the hit,
    to take out their target.
  • 8:35 - 8:38
They could have killed people using poison
  • 8:39 - 8:43
    but the victim could take
    an antidote and survive.
  • 8:44 - 8:48
    They could have killed people
    using arrows or projectile weapons
  • 8:50 - 8:53
    but there's always the risk
    of missing the vital organs.
  • 8:59 - 9:03
    Eventually, the weapon they choose
    is the dagger.
  • 9:07 - 9:10
    Striking up close,
you can make sure of a kill.
  • 9:12 - 9:15
A dagger gives you a greater chance
    of actually achieving your aim.
  • 9:18 - 9:22
    But using daggers in combat
    demands immense skill.
  • 9:24 - 9:25
    Throughout history
  • 9:25 - 9:28
    there's only three different types
of weapons available in a dagger.
  • 9:28 - 9:30
    You have a stabbing,
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    you have a slashing
  • 9:33 - 9:35
and you have a slashing and stabbing.
  • 9:36 - 9:39
Now, the first one we have
    is something like a stiletto.
  • 9:39 - 9:44
The key point about the stiletto
    is it's very strong.
  • 9:44 - 9:47
Thin blade for high penetration power.
  • 9:47 - 9:51
So, a stabbing of a stiletto
    goes straight through.
  • 9:51 - 9:53
    So, in and stab through.
  • 9:53 - 9:56
    With a weapon concealed,
    you walk towards him
  • 9:56 - 9:58
    pull out, stab walk on.
  • 10:00 - 10:03
The next type is a slashing blade.
  • 10:03 - 10:06
From here they will just draw and slash.
  • 10:06 - 10:08
As you can see, in one motion,
  • 10:08 - 10:11
    it would be very hard
to even see that it happened.
  • 10:16 - 10:20
The third major design would be
    a slashing and stabbing weapon.
  • 10:20 - 10:22
Now, this is a modern version,
  • 10:23 - 10:25
so, from here it's got sharp blade curves would also have a back blade so you can cut back if you miss very strong guard here this guard
    10:30
allows you to stab down very heavily so you have different options as to how you move and how to combine
