How does Hollywood help whitewash Israel’s ‘image problem’?

  • 0:01 - 0:03
    Only a handful of American
movie stars speak up for Palestine,
  • 0:03 - 0:06
and those few are made to pay
the price for their public sport.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
Why is it so important for the
movie industry to silence those voices?
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    Israeli historian Giora Goodman says.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
So I was surprised again and again to find just
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    how much effort and care
    and thought
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    had been put in by
    Israeli government officials
  • 0:33 - 0:35
by Israeli IDF officers into bringing
  • 0:38 - 0:41
over to Israel's cause what is
    the global entertainment capital.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    So Hollywood matters
to Israel because it is influential.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
But why does Israel matter to Hollywood?
  • 0:49 - 0:51
It is difficult to ask that question,
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    let alone answer it without
    attracting charges of anti-Semitism.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
Mr. Cartman, you're on dangerous freaking
  • 0:58 - 1:00
ground here, buddy. I'm sorry, why is it
  • 1:00 - 1:02
so offensive to say who runs Hollywood?
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    People like Hollywood. Hollywood's cute.
  • 1:04 - 1:05
The Jews should be honored to be in
  • 1:05 - 1:07
charge of it. It is true that widespread
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    anti-Semitism conspiracy theories about
  • 1:09 - 1:12
Jews running Hollywood exist and fuel a
  • 1:12 - 1:14
dangerous mentality. But making the whole
  • 1:14 - 1:16
topic taboo to talk about is not the
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    answer. Israeli historian Giora Goodman
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    and British historian Tony Shaw
  • 1:21 - 1:23
co-authored a book called Israel and
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    Hollywood. The authors told the
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    University of Southern California that.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
Hollywood bosses such as Barney Balaban
  • 1:30 - 1:32
in the 1950s, Arthur Crim in the
  • 1:32 - 1:35
1960s and Haim Saban in the 21st
  • 1:35 - 1:37
century have also sought to use their
  • 1:37 - 1:39
political influence in the White House
  • 1:39 - 1:41
and with U.S. decision makers to promote
  • 1:41 - 1:44
the goals of Israeli diplomacy in war and
  • 1:44 - 1:46
peace. It is undeniable that Hollywood
  • 1:46 - 1:49
has a very real influence on U.S.-Israel
  • 1:49 - 1:52
relations, and that influence is linked
  • 1:52 - 1:54
to Hollywood's Jewish roots. For a people
  • 1:54 - 1:56
so small in number, our impact is
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    staggering. Dozens of
  • 1:59 - 2:01
Emmy and Golden Globe winners and
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    almost 40% of Oscar-winning directors
  • 2:04 - 2:06
are members of the tribe. That is
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    Israel's very own Genesis Price
  • 2:09 - 2:11
Foundation. It is a widely known fact
  • 2:11 - 2:14
that modern America first saw light on a
  • 2:14 - 2:16
Hollywood screen. It was largely the
  • 2:16 - 2:19
product of 6 movie studios established in
  • 2:19 - 2:22
the 1920s. And run for over 30 years
  • 2:22 - 2:25
by a group of Jewish immigrants. They had
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    strikingly similar backgrounds. These
  • 2:27 - 2:29
five or six Jewish immigrants ended up
  • 2:29 - 2:32
building all the first major studios that
  • 2:32 - 2:35
created Hollywood from scratch. All of
  • 2:35 - 2:38
these men who founded Hollywood were
  • 2:38 - 2:40
born within a 500 mile radius of one
  • 2:41 - 2:43
another, and all of them wound up roughly
  • 2:43 - 2:45
within 15 miles of one another. In Los
  • 2:45 - 2:47
Angeles, the influence Hollywood and its
  • 2:47 - 2:49
movie stars had in the US would soon be
  • 2:49 - 2:52
utilized to garner support from American
  • 2:52 - 2:54
Jews and Gentiles alike for the Zionist
  • 2:54 - 2:56
project. This kind of movie going was
  • 2:56 - 2:58
religious because it had to do with
  • 2:58 - 3:01
worship. It had to do with the screen
  • 3:01 - 3:04
being larger than you were and you
  • 3:04 - 3:06
being in awe of what you were looking at.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    The Jewish production studio heads
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    organized fundraisers with their movie
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    stars and wealthy influential connections
  • 3:13 - 3:15
and collected 10s of millions of dollars
  • 3:15 - 3:17
for a massive emigration of Jews to
  • 3:17 - 3:19
Palestine under the British Mandate. One
  • 3:19 - 3:22
of these men, Barney Belaban, head of
  • 3:22 - 3:24
Paramount Pictures from the 1930s to the
  • 3:24 - 3:26
60s, would even help found the most
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    influential Israeli lobby group in
  • 3:29 - 3:31
America, APEC. But money and political
  • 3:31 - 3:34
connections were only secondary to their
  • 3:34 - 3:36
main efforts, which was to tell a
  • 3:36 - 3:38
romanticized story about the creation of
  • 3:38 - 3:41
Israel. The first feature length Zionist
  • 3:41 - 3:43
film made by Hollywood was secretly
  • 3:43 - 3:45
funded in large part by the controversial
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    Jewish National Fund. JNF, established
  • 3:48 - 3:51
in 1901, is the financial arm of the
  • 3:51 - 3:53
Zionist organization. The film did not do
  • 3:53 - 3:56
well, but the partnership between Israel
  • 3:56 - 3:58
and Hollywood was not going to fizzle out
  • 3:58 - 4:00
that easily. They made film after film
  • 4:00 - 4:03
until they hit the jackpot with the 1960
  • 4:03 - 4:05
movie Exodus. Exodus was based on a
  • 4:05 - 4:08
racist novel by the same name that the
  • 4:08 - 4:10
Israeli Foreign Minister Golda Meir at
  • 4:10 - 4:12
the time said was more influential than
  • 4:12 - 4:14
60 years of Zionists and Israeli
  • 4:14 - 4:17
propaganda. As a film, Exodus went even
  • 4:17 - 4:19
further than the book in totally erasing
  • 4:19 - 4:21
the Nakba, the massive ethnic cleansing
  • 4:21 - 4:24
    and displacement of 750,000
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    Palestinians in 1948. The Jewish
  • 4:27 - 4:29
hero of the story, Ben Canaan, begs the
  • 4:29 - 4:32
Arabs to stay in their homes and become
  • 4:32 - 4:34
an equal part of the state, but they
  • 4:34 - 4:37
refuse and leave. After the 1960s,
  • 4:37 - 4:38
    Hollywood moved on from completely
  • 4:38 - 4:41
    ignoring the Palestinians. To portraying
  • 4:41 - 4:43
Arabs and Muslims as irrational, evil
  • 4:43 - 4:45
terrorists who often had no real
  • 4:45 - 4:48
motivation beyond they hate our freedoms.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    Arab enemies were dehumanized while
  • 4:50 - 4:52
telling the story of Jewish victims of
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    the Holocaust helped melt American
  • 4:54 - 4:56
    hearts. A 1978 TV
  • 4:56 - 4:59
    miniseries called Holocaust featuring
  • 4:59 - 5:01
Meryl Streep was watched by nearly 100
  • 5:01 - 5:04
million Americans. It told the story of
  • 5:04 - 5:07
the Holocaust in four episodes over 9 1/2
  • 5:07 - 5:10
hours and ended with Jewish orphans being
  • 5:10 - 5:12
smuggled into Palestine illegally. It was
  • 5:12 - 5:15
not until Israel's invasion of Lebanon in
  • 5:15 - 5:17
1982, when Israel killed thousands of
  • 5:17 - 5:20
civilians, that tides started turning and
  • 5:20 - 5:22
public opinion that Israel was the
  • 5:22 - 5:24
underdog started to change in the US in
  • 5:24 - 5:27
the 1980s with the first Lebanon war and
  • 5:28 - 5:30
then the first Zindifadan. The the
  • 5:30 - 5:33
moral doubts about Israel's use of
  • 5:33 - 5:36
force and the direction of its
  • 5:36 - 5:39
government, and that is the younger, the
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    younger liberals, they are more
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    ambivalent about Israel, while the
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    old generation,
  • 5:47 - 5:50
such as Kirk Douglas, would support
  • 5:50 - 5:52
Israel. According to a 2004 report by the
  • 5:52 - 5:55
    American Jewish Committee, a younger
  • 5:55 - 5:57
    Netanyahu met with Hollywood executives
  • 5:57 - 6:00
in 2001. And challenge them to do
  • 6:00 - 6:01
    something about Israel's image problem.
  • 6:02 - 6:04
    Netanyahu has long enjoyed close
  • 6:04 - 6:06
relations with his buddies in Hollywood.
  • 6:06 - 6:07
One of the most shocking Hollywood
  • 6:07 - 6:09
stories is that of his pal, producer
  • 6:09 - 6:12
Arnon Milken. Milken is behind massively
  • 6:12 - 6:14
    successful commercial films like Pretty
  • 6:14 - 6:16
Woman, Fight Club, 12 Years a Slave,
  • 6:17 - 6:19
Little Woman, and many more. During his
  • 6:19 - 6:21
time as an Israeli spy and arms dealer,
  • 6:21 - 6:24
one of Milken's jobs was to acquire
  • 6:24 - 6:26
uranium from South Africa for Israel's
  • 6:26 - 6:29
nuclear program, and in exchange, he ran
  • 6:29 - 6:31
this massive pro apartheid campaign in
  • 6:31 - 6:34
Hollywood on behalf of South Africa. In
  • 6:34 - 6:35
the end, one of the most important things
  • 6:35 - 6:38
Hollywood did to rally American support
  • 6:38 - 6:40
for Israel was to tell the story of the
  • 6:40 - 6:42
Holocaust and connect it to the
  • 6:42 - 6:44
    establishment of Israel. while completely
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    disregarding and erasing the suffering
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.
  • 6:49 - 6:51
Countless films, TV shows, and fictional
  • 6:51 - 6:53
    characters work to make often
  • 6:53 - 6:55
    white-looking Israeli heroes relatable to
  • 6:55 - 6:57
white people in the US, and to paint
  • 6:57 - 6:59
Muslims and Arabs as the violent and
  • 6:59 - 7:02
savage enemy of the unified, peace-loving
  • 7:02 - 7:04
Judeo-Christian people. What do you think?
  • 7:05 - 7:07
Do Hollywood films and celebrities still
  • 7:07 - 7:09
hold influence over what people think of
  • 7:09 - 7:10
    Israel and Palestine?
