Meet Melissa Perez

  • 0:08 - 0:09
    My name is Melissa Perez.
  • 0:09 - 0:13
I was born and raised in the Bronx, New York City,
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    but my parents are Mexican.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
Two years ago, graduating high school
  • 0:18 - 0:22
was not even in my plans.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
I was doing horribly in school.
  • 0:26 - 0:32
Going to a school that has metal detectors is stressful.
  • 0:32 - 0:37
You have to stand in line 25 minutes to an hour.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
I would only go in third period
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    and come out fourth.
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    I went third period
  • 0:43 - 0:46
because I knew they didn't take attendance first and second.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
So, basically, if you were going third period,
  • 0:48 - 0:50
they would mark you present for the whole day.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
I just wasn't interested in school.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    Then, when I was 17,
  • 0:56 - 0:59
I gave birth to my daughter, Madeline.
  • 0:59 - 1:04
Getting pregnant changed my approach tremendously.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    I thought, "I'm pregnant, I don't have a diploma.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
So what I am I going to be working the rest of my life?
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    $7.25 an hour?
  • 1:11 - 1:15
No! I have to graduate and go to college."
  • 1:16 - 1:21
Being a mom, still going to high school is, ummm,
  • 1:21 - 1:24
overwhelming, I would say, at the beginning,
  • 1:24 - 1:28
but I had this math teacher who encouraged me
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    to go on with school.
  • 1:30 - 1:34
She always said that she saw something in me.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
She was like, "I know there's something inside you there
  • 1:36 - 1:38
that wants to fight for it."
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    She always pushes me,
  • 1:40 - 1:43
she always gives me the hard questions
  • 1:43 - 1:46
because she knows that my favorite subject is math.
  • 1:46 - 1:47
She's always like, "Melissa, figure this out.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    Melissa, figure that out."
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    And I'm like, "Okay, okay."
  • 1:50 - 1:50
    I like that about her
  • 1:50 - 1:52
because she always tends to push me.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    Thelma is the first teacher
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    that has treated me,
  • 1:58 - 1:59
    you know,
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    I guess, special.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
After I had my baby, I got my head into the game
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    and I passed my classes.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
Being a mom at a young age
  • 2:10 - 2:12
either makes you or breaks you,
  • 2:12 - 2:14
but, in my case, it made me.
  • 2:14 - 2:18
It made me have a total different visual for my future.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
I am the first person in my family
  • 2:23 - 2:30
    to graduate from high school.
