Wigan - Liverpool - Chester | Circular Route

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    GLOVESTRAINS: Hey, everyone!
    GLovesTrains 'ere.
  • 0:02 - 0:04
    Now recently
    I've been thinking back
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    to a vlog I made
    on a circular route
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    connecting the Wigan
    with Carlisle and Leeds.
  • 0:09 - 0:10
And it's really put me in the mood
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    to do another circular route.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
The one I've come up with
    is gonna see me
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    starting here at the Wigan,
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    going to Liverpool,
    to Chester
  • 0:18 - 0:19
    and then, hopefully
at the end of the day,
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    ending up right back here
    in the Wigan.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
Reyt, let's go to the train station!
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    Just walking past where
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    pretty much the whole
    of Wigan town centre
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    is being demolished
    at the moment.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    (MACHINERY NOISE)
These photos that are up, which show what
  • 0:37 - 0:38
the centre's going to look like,
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    hopefully at some point
    in the future,
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    they do actually remind me
    of Salford Quays.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 0:46 - 0:47
I'm 'ere at the Wigan Wallgate now.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
It's not often I start my vlogs
    from the Wigan anymore!
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    I am just waiting
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    for the 0912 service
    to Kirkby.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
    I'm on a loud 150. It's 150138.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
And it is one of the ones
    with what I think
  • 1:02 - 1:03
are the nicer kind of seats.
  • 1:03 - 1:04
So I am happy about it!
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    With regards to the tickets,
    I am travelling
  • 1:09 - 1:12
on a the Wigan to Chester
    Off-peak Day Return.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
It does allow you to go
    via Liverpool to Chester.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
Or the usual way I travel to Chester
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    via Warrington.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    I was on the lookout
  • 1:25 - 1:28
for the new Headbolt Lane station
    which is being built.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    It is very exciting
    that we're gonna have
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
a brand new station in the North West!
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    (TRAIN DOORS BEEP)
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
    At Kirkby now, changing from
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    the Northern side
    onto the Merseyrail side.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    And of course, the 777s
    have now entered service.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    And they are running
    down the Kirkby line.
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    But whether or not
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    I'm gonna actually
    get on one right now?
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    It's complete pot luck.
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 1:52 - 1:54
So I was planning on getting the
  • 1:54 - 1:55
    0958 service.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    But I've just seen
    that it's six coaches.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    And the one after
    which is at 1013,
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    is four coaches.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
So I've decided I am going
    to wait for that one.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    Well, I'm chuffed!
I finally get to ride on a Buzzy Bee.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    It's 777018.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    I have been on
    stationary 777s before.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    (TRAIN DOORS BEEP)
But not yet a moving one.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    So I am looking forward
to riding this one in service.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    ANNOUNCEMENT:
    'This Merseyrail service to
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    'Liverpool Central'.
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    (TRAIN NOISE)
G: So one thing I didn't get to hear
  • 2:30 - 2:31
the last time I was on these units
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    (ANNOUNCEMENT BEGINS)
    was...the announcements.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
And it does sound like that is
    a totally different Merseyrail voice.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    The screens above the windows
that show like the CCTV and that
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    aren't currently working.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
    But the Wi-fi and
    the power outlets are.
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 2:50 - 2:51
    Ahhh, we're in
    the scary Merseyrail tunnel!
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
    (TRAIN DOORS BEEP)
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    (TRAIN NOISE)
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 3:00 - 3:02
G: Well, I really did enjoy that!
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    I'm now at Moorfields,
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    where I'm gonna change over
    from the Northern Line
  • 3:06 - 3:06
    to the Wirral Line.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 3:13 - 3:16
    Just waiting for
the 1041 service to pull in.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    I will be back
    on a lovely PEP now.
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    (TRAIN NOISE)
Just making our way through Liverpool
  • 3:21 - 3:24
    on 507033
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    as we're heading down
    the Chester Line.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
Question is, is my seat squeaky?
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    (SQUEAKING SOUNDS)
    It is!
  • 3:31 - 3:32
    (TRAIN BELL DINGS TWICE)
  • 3:32 - 3:33
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    (TRAIN NOISE)
I have gotten off the train at Port Sunlight.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    Because the first time
    I was here,
  • 3:39 - 3:41
I had such a quick changeover,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    I had no time whatsoever
  • 3:43 - 3:45
to go out into the area.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
And I have been to Merseyside
    a lot since.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    And again, have yet
    to come to Port Sunlight!
  • 3:50 - 3:52
So whilst I'm in Merseyside today,
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    I've made sure to
    give myself loads of time
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    to spend at Port Sunlight!
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    Blimey! It was worth
just coming outside of the station
  • 4:03 - 4:04
    to see the station front.
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    It is absolutely gorgeous!
  • 4:06 - 4:09
I am off for a walk,
I think it's about half an hour,
  • 4:09 - 4:11
to a park called River Park.
  • 4:11 - 4:12
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 4:13 - 4:14
    My new friend!
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 4:18 - 4:19
Hey look, it's half of me!
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    I've reached the park.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
Well, I mean I'm sorta just
    on this path that's walking...
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    It feels like it's walking
    all the way outside but
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    then that just looks like
    a load of trees.
  • 4:30 - 4:33
    (WIND NOISE)
I am headed towards the River Mersey.
  • 4:33 - 4:34
And I think it is coming up,
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    because it's getting
    more and more windy!
  • 4:36 - 4:37
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 4:40 - 4:43
This is one of the oddest parks
    I've been to.
  • 4:43 - 4:45
It is basically just like a walking path.
    (LAUGHS)
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    But in front of me,
    there's this statue, right?
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    And, genuinely, as I was
    walking down from over there,
  • 4:51 - 4:52
I thought it was a real person.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    But I am now overlooking
  • 4:54 - 4:56
    some beautiful flowing water!
  • 4:56 - 4:58
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    (SHOUTS) Squishy boobies!
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 5:06 - 5:09
May as well have a walk
    up to the summit 'ere!
  • 5:09 - 5:10
    Doesn't look too high.
  • 5:10 - 5:11
    We'll see what
the view's like from up 'ere!
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 5:18 - 5:19
    (WIND NOISE)
I'm at the summit now, although again...
  • 5:19 - 5:21
It doesn't really feel like a summit,
  • 5:21 - 5:23
it just feels like a path high up!
    (LAUGHS)
  • 5:23 - 5:25
There is this information board here,
  • 5:25 - 5:26
telling you all that you can see.
  • 5:26 - 5:28
You can see loads of Liverpool.
  • 5:28 - 5:30
And then over in the opposite direction,
    there's the Welsh mountains!
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    I'm getting on...
    It's actually the same train!
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    (TRAIN BRAKES SQUEAL)
    507003.
  • 5:41 - 5:42
And I'm gonna be riding this one
  • 5:42 - 5:44
all the way up to Chester.
  • 5:44 - 5:45
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 5:48 - 5:50
    (TRAIN NOISE)
So on this 1231 service, we did just
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    pass by Bromborough Rake.
  • 5:52 - 5:55
On the last train as well,
    we passed by Green Lane.
  • 5:55 - 5:57
I'm so used to the trains down here
  • 5:57 - 5:58
    stopping at all the stops.
  • 5:58 - 6:01
    (BACKGROUND CHATTER)
But I think there was a timetable change
  • 6:01 - 6:04
    where the Ellesmere Port trains
    call at those two stations.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
But the Chester trains no longer do.
  • 6:06 - 6:08
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 6:13 - 6:16
I have been to Chester station
    quite a few times now.
  • 6:16 - 6:18
    But I thought I'd take
    the opportunity today
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    (BACKGROUND CHATTER)
to actually go for a walk
  • 6:20 - 6:21
    outside of the station.
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    If there's flowing water,
    I will find it.
  • 6:31 - 6:34
I'm just having a walk along
    the Shropshire Union Canal.
  • 6:34 - 6:35
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 6:41 - 6:43
Just coming up to Chester City Walls.
  • 6:43 - 6:45
And I think that this is
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    the busiest canal
    I have ever been on.
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    Well, beyond that bridge
    I've just come through,
  • 6:49 - 6:51
it was absolutely heaving with people!
  • 6:51 - 6:53
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 7:04 - 7:05
    Back in the station now.
  • 7:05 - 7:08
    Just waiting for the 1352
    Transport for Wales service.
  • 7:08 - 7:10
I was hoping on this next ride
  • 7:10 - 7:12
to get one of the new Class 197s.
  • 7:13 - 7:15
    And...admittedly,
I did have a look this morning.
  • 7:15 - 7:19
And it is a Class 197 that's gonna be
    taking me to Warrington.
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
  • 7:21 - 7:24
    ANNOUNCEMENT: 'Croeso i trên
    Trafnidiaeth Cymru.'
  • 7:24 - 7:27
    ANNOUNCEMENT:
    'Calling at Colwyn Bay.'
  • 7:27 - 7:30
    We have departed Chester
    fifteen minutes late.
  • 7:30 - 7:32
    (BACKGROUND CHATTER)
And I have to say that the announcements
  • 7:32 - 7:34
    are very long.
  • 7:34 - 7:36
    And they're also completely
out of sync at the moment
  • 7:36 - 7:37
    with where we are.
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    But like with the 777s,
  • 7:39 - 7:41
    I have been on
    a stationary 197,
  • 7:41 - 7:43
but I've not been on a moving one.
  • 7:43 - 7:46
So this is the first one in service
    that I've ridden.
  • 7:46 - 7:49
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
    It is 197012.
  • 7:49 - 7:50
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 7:54 - 7:57
    Do you know what?
    I'm actually really enjoying playing
  • 7:57 - 7:59
    with the extension
    on the table trays.
  • 7:59 - 8:02
    It's like one of them
you get on a rowing machine.
  • 8:02 - 8:03
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 8:12 - 8:15
    I was getting a lovely
bum massage off that 197 then.
  • 8:15 - 8:18
    I'm now just changing over
    at Colwyn Bay...
  • 8:18 - 8:19
    Sorry! Wazza Wankey.
  • 8:20 - 8:21
Because of the delay on that train,
  • 8:21 - 8:24
    I have missed the connection
I was initially planning to get.
  • 8:24 - 8:26
    But, it doesn't really matter.
  • 8:26 - 8:27
I'll just wait a little longer
  • 8:27 - 8:30
for the next train to take me
    back to the Wigan.
  • 8:30 - 8:31
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 8:42 - 8:44
    I'm on the 1515 service
  • 8:44 - 8:46
    (BACKGROUND CHATTER)
    departing Wazza two minutes late.
  • 8:46 - 8:48
    The train is 390136.
  • 8:48 - 8:50
    It is an unrefurbished Pendolino.
  • 8:50 - 8:52
I'm on 'ere for about ten minutes.
  • 8:52 - 8:54
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    (TRAIN NOISE)
And in what feels like no time at all,
  • 9:00 - 9:01
    I'm back in the Wigan.
  • 9:01 - 9:03
I'm at the Wigan North Western this time.
  • 9:03 - 9:04
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 9:11 - 9:13
    Yeah, it's a building site
    round 'ere at the minute.
  • 9:13 - 9:16
The whole of the Wigan town centre's
    just being demolished.
  • 9:17 - 9:18
Oh, wait! I said this before.
  • 9:18 - 9:19
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 9:23 - 9:26
    And I've come full circle!
  • 9:26 - 9:27
I have loved every minute of today!
  • 9:27 - 9:30
Especially riding on the new trains.
  • 9:30 - 9:32
    And I do really enjoy
    doing these circular vlogs,
  • 9:32 - 9:34
    so I may potentially
    try to look into
  • 9:34 - 9:36
coming up with some more of them.
  • 9:36 - 9:38
    Thank you very much
    for watching, everyone!
  • 9:38 - 9:39
    Byesie byes!
  • 9:39 - 9:41
    (UPBEAT MUSIC)
  • 9:44 - 9:47
    (MUSIC ENDS)
