How to Use GTunnel

  • 0:10 - 0:14
Hello and welcome to another 12pm Tutorial. This tutorial will teach you how to use Gtunnel
  • 0:14 - 0:17
in order to access the Internet securely.
  • 0:17 - 0:24
Gtunnel is a program that creates a local HTTP or SOCKS proxy and uses that proxy to send
  • 0:24 - 0:29
information from your computer to the GTunnel server farm and then out to the greater
  • 0:29 - 0:32
Internet. This means that Gtunnel is encrypting your web session and circumventing any
  • 0:32 - 0:37
filters that might prevent you from viewing content online in your area.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
Now that you know how it works, lets go get the software.
  • 0:40 - 0:51
Open up a web browser and go to www.gardennetworks.org.
  • 0:51 - 0:55
Feel free to take a look around the Garden Networks page and when you are ready to move
  • 0:55 - 0:58
on click the “Download” link on the right.
  • 0:58 - 1:03
Now click the link that says “Click here” and save the file to your computer.
  • 1:03 - 1:10
Once the file finishes downloading close out these windows and go to where you saved the file.
  • 1:10 - 1:15
The program comes to you in a zip file. If your computer cannot automatically open these
  • 1:15 - 1:32
files you will need a program like winzip or 7zip to open it. Go ahead and extract the files.
  • 1:32 - 1:37
Inside the folder you will see three files, this is all you need to run the program. Go ahead
  • 1:37 - 1:41
and double click the GTunnel icon.
  • 1:41 - 1:46
This is the Gtunnel user interface. You can see that it is currently in Standard Mode and that
  • 1:46 - 1:52
it says it is not ready. The creators of Gtunnel have decided not to offer the standard mode
  • 1:52 - 1:56
for people outside of China, but that’s ok, because they have built in other ways for people to
  • 1:56 - 1:59
use the program. Let me show you how that’s done.
  • 1:59 - 2:06
First, click on settings. Here you should see Options, Standard Mode, Skype Mode, Gtalk
  • 2:06 - 2:12
Mode, and Tor Mode. We’re going to use Gtalk mode but we have to set it up first. Click
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    the options button.
  • 2:14 - 2:19
Under the settings tab I’m going to check the box marked “Clear Internet Explorer cache on
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    exit” for added security.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    Now click the “Transport” tab.
  • 2:25 - 2:30
Here you should see two boxes labeled “Gmail” and “Password”. If you don’t have a gmail
  • 2:30 - 2:38
account go to www.gmail.com and sign up for one now, I’ll wait.
  • 2:38 - 2:43
Now that you have a gmail account enter your username and password here and then click the
  • 2:43 - 2:50
    button that says “Test”.
  • 2:50 - 2:55
When it says “Test Succeeded” you’re ready to go on. Click the OK button.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    Click this OK button too.
  • 2:57 - 3:03
Now click the settings button again and select Gtalk mode. In a moment your’s Trans State
  • 3:03 - 3:10
will go from Not Ready to Ready.
  • 3:10 - 3:15
Now click the Internet Explorer button and then select yes.
  • 3:15 - 3:19
Before we do anything we should run a test. I’m going to open up an unencrypted web
  • 3:19 - 3:29
    browser and go to www.checkip.org.
  • 3:29 - 3:33
That number is my current IP address.
  • 3:33 - 3:39
Now go back to the Internet Explorer browser and go to www.checkip.org.
  • 3:39 - 3:44
Hmm, that’s not good, the number hasn’t changed. If this happens to you there is a very
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    simple fix.
  • 3:46 - 3:50
First go to tools, then internet options.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    Click the connections tab.
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    Click on LAN settings.
  • 3:56 - 4:06
Check the “Use a proxy server for your LAN” box and then after “Address” enter 127.0.0.1
  • 4:06 - 4:15
and after “Port” enter 8081 and click ok and then click ok again.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    Refresh the page.
  • 4:17 - 4:21
Great, the numbers changed, which means that we are now using an encrypted channel to
  • 4:21 - 4:32
    access the Internet.
  • 4:32 - 4:37
In the lower right hand corner of your screen there should be a small, green version of the
  • 4:37 - 4:42
Gtunnel icon. You can click this icon and access many of the different options that are
  • 4:42 - 4:49
    available on the user interface.
  • 4:49 - 4:53
To exit the program, simply click exit.
  • 4:53 -
Now you know how to use GTunnel.
