importing assets into Blender

  • 0:00 - 0:05
    >> This video covers how to import
    assets into your blender file.
  • 0:05 - 0:13
So if you download files from, say, a
place like Poly Haven or another website
  • 0:13 - 0:20
where it allows you to download files, you may
get a blender file with it, but you may not.
  • 0:20 - 0:23
It may just be an object with
    textures and things on it.
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    So be aware of that.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
If you are able to get a blender
    file, there are different ways
  • 0:28 - 0:31
that you can bring it into your scene.
  • 0:31 - 0:37
One is by just downloading the file, say,
from Poly Haven or if you're doing TurboSquid,
  • 0:37 - 0:43
other sites like that often have a
blender file that you can download.
  • 0:44 - 0:51
So if you're using a blender file, then, once
it's downloaded, you just go it File, Open,
  • 0:52 - 0:56
and I'm going to double click
    on my painted wooden chair.
  • 0:56 - 1:00
And go into texture mode, and there's the chair.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    So that works great.
  • 1:03 - 1:08
But what if I wanted to add other
things that I downloaded into the scene?
  • 1:08 - 1:13
The other way that you can do that
is -- I'll make a new general scene.
  • 1:13 - 1:20
And I'm just going to make a cube here.
  • 1:20 - 1:27
And so say I wanted to bring the chair
into this scene that's already in progress.
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    I can't just open it.
  • 1:29 - 1:34
Instead I have to go to File and Append.
  • 1:35 - 1:41
And I'll go to the desktop and
    find the painted wooden chair.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
And I double click on the blender file.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
So if we look at this, there's the blend file.
  • 1:48 - 1:56
And then I go to Mesh, and
I double click on Chair OO1.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
And I'll bring this up here.
  • 2:00 - 2:10
And like magic, it comes into your scene, and it
even has all of the textures associated with it.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    This doesn't always work.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
If you have a blender file, it's properly
packed and all of the textures are
  • 2:16 - 2:18
in the right place, then this works.
  • 2:19 - 2:28
If you find that this doesn't work, then you may
have to open up the blend file and then add it
  • 2:28 - 2:32
as an asset and then add
    it to your asset library.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
There's a separate video for that.
  • 2:34 - 2:39
So if you are interested in
learning more about how to set
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    up the asset library, please
    check out that video.
  • 2:42 - 2:49
Another thing you may want do is
just import a single part of a file.
  • 2:49 - 2:55
So say you wanted to just import
    a material from another file.
  • 2:55 - 3:01
So if I wanted to, say, get a wood material
from one of the previous assignments,
  • 3:01 - 3:08
I would just simply go to File,
Append, and then I go to my desktop.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
I'm going to look in the intro assignments here.
  • 3:11 - 3:19
I'll just go to the top here and open
up the blend file and go to material.
  • 3:19 - 3:24
And now I can see all the materials
that are used in the scene.
  • 3:24 - 3:31
And say I just want to get
    like the wall wood material.
  • 3:31 - 3:32
    So I'll double click that.
  • 3:33 - 3:42
And now, when I look over here under material,
I can see I have wall wood that is available.
  • 3:42 - 3:47
So if I select this object
and I assign wall wood to it,
  • 3:47 - 3:51
    then I have that material
    that came from another scene.
  • 3:51 - 3:54
So that can also be very useful.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
If you're going to be using
    things over and over again,
  • 3:57 - 4:03
I highly recommend using the asset
browser and setting up a library.
  • 4:04 - 4:10
So that, once you have an object and you're
like, oh, I want not just one chair, but,
  • 4:10 - 4:11
you know, I want to have a bunch of chairs,
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    you can duplicate chairs,
    you know, that's no problem.
  • 4:15 - 4:21
But if you want to have a sort of drag-and-drop
way of bringing things into a scene and then
  • 4:21 - 4:26
if you have another different scene
where you want to use the same assets,
  • 4:27 - 4:30
instead of having to reimport then over again,
  • 4:30 - 4:34
you can just use the asset
    browser to bring them in.
  • 4:34 - 4:36
So, and that's covered in a separate video.
