  • 0:00 - 0:02
    NO NO
  • 0:02 - 0:04
Why dont we talk more about mental health
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    in the African American community?
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    Son of a...
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    Mental health
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    It's a term that I am sure you've heard
  • 0:11 - 0:14
being used at school or on social media
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    You know that it's important
  • 0:15 - 0:17
and that it's something people are trying
  • 0:17 - 0:18
    to raise awareness about
  • 0:18 - 0:20
But have you ever stopped to think about
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    what it really means?
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    lets dig into it
  • 0:23 - 0:26
This is KN Explains mental health
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    Everyone has mental health,
  • 0:30 - 0:32
but what does that really mean?
  • 0:32 - 0:34
What's the difference between feeling sad
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    and being depressed?
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    feeling nervous
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    versus having an anxiety disorder,
  • 0:38 - 0:41
and what can you do to help?
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    to better understand this topic
  • 0:44 - 0:46
I turned to a few experts
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    Hi
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    my name is Jeremy Parkin
  • 0:48 - 0:50
and i am a wellness support worker
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    with the Yukon First Nations
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    Education Directorate
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    Hey
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    I'm jennifer Khoury
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    I am a psychologist
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    here in Halifax
  • 0:57 - 0:59
My name is Simone Saunders, and I'm
  • 0:59 - 1:02
a licensed therapist in Calgary, Alberta
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    So what is mental health?
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    Well, according to our experts,
  • 1:06 - 1:08
it is a term used to describe our
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    social and emotional well-being
  • 1:10 - 1:12
Mental health is just as important
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    as physical health
  • 1:13 - 1:15
and needs to be taking care of
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    just the same
  • 1:16 - 1:17
It is affected by many factors,
  • Not Synced
    including your genetics,
  • Not Synced
    your physical health,
  • Not Synced
    your life experiences,
  • Not Synced
    and more
  • Not Synced
    We all have stress
  • Not Synced
And we all have mental health needs
  • Not Synced
to take care of our mental health
  • Not Synced
We have to balance out the stress
  • Not Synced
If we think of us all having
  • Not Synced
    a stress bucket,
  • Not Synced
    it gets filled up
  • Not Synced
    with different stressors, schoolwork,
  • Not Synced
    conflict with friends, family,
  • Not Synced
all different things fill up our bucket
  • Not Synced
    But if it gets twofold,
  • Not Synced
it can lead to us feeling overwhelmed,
  • Not Synced
    burned out, or worse
  • Not Synced
So to take care of our mental health,
  • Not Synced
we need to be able to relieve
  • Not Synced
    some of those stressors
  • Not Synced
You can do that by getting regular sleep
  • Not Synced
    Eating well, socializing with
  • Not Synced
    friends and family
  • Not Synced
    Going outside and
  • Not Synced
    getting physical activity,
  • Not Synced
anything that helps us feel good
  • Not Synced
    Imagine each time you
  • Not Synced
    relieve your stress,
  • Not Synced
a small hole is made in the bucket
  • Not Synced
    Offloading the weight
  • Not Synced
    of all those stressors
  • Not Synced
    Keeping it all in balance
  • Not Synced
    is key to mental wellness
  • Not Synced
Mental wellness is a lifelong process
  • Not Synced
    and is different for everyone
  • Not Synced
It doesn't mean always being happy,
  • Not Synced
    but rather that you're able
  • Not Synced
    to manage well
  • Not Synced
    in your day-to-day life
  • Not Synced
    Mental wellness is a spectrum
  • Not Synced
    that goes up and down
  • Not Synced
    throughout our lives
  • Not Synced
    There may be another term
  • Not Synced
    you're hearing
  • Not Synced
    Mental illness
  • Not Synced
    Mental illness is one part
  • Not Synced
    of mental health
  • Not Synced
According to a survey from 2012,
  • Not Synced
one in three Canadians will be
  • Not Synced
    affected by a mental illness
  • Not Synced
    in their lifetime
  • Not Synced
A mental illness is a diagnosis
  • Not Synced
which may be determined by a doctor
  • Not Synced
    based on symptoms
  • Not Synced
and how they affect a person's life
  • Not Synced
Mental illness is not the same
  • Not Synced
    as feeling distressed
  • Not Synced
because of normal reactions to difficult
  • Not Synced
situations like losing a loved one
  • Not Synced
or big changes like moving to a new school
  • Not Synced
    Everyone has feelings that
  • Not Synced
    can feel negative at times
  • Not Synced
    like feeling sad or anxious,
  • Not Synced
but not everyone has a mental illness
  • Not Synced
    So mental illness involves
  • Not Synced
mental health problems that are really
  • Not Synced
linked to high levels of distress
  • Not Synced
Or problems functioning in daily life
  • Not Synced
    Sadness, for example, is not
  • Not Synced
    a mental illness,
  • Not Synced
but if that sadness is paired with
  • Not Synced
    other symptoms like tiredness,
  • Not Synced
    irritability,
  • Not Synced
a lack of enjoyment of things
  • Not Synced
    you used to enjoy,
  • Not Synced
    then that could be depression
  • Not Synced
    Depression is a mental illness
  • Not Synced
    Another common mental health concern
  • Not Synced
    is anxiety
  • Not Synced
Everyone can feel stressed or anxious
  • Not Synced
    at times,
  • Not Synced
but not everyone has an anxiety disorder
  • Not Synced
    Why are you making me
  • Not Synced
    so self-conscious right now?
  • Not Synced
    Because I have to
  • Not Synced
    Why?
  • Not Synced
    Because I'm anxiety
  • Not Synced
    People who are mentally ill
  • Not Synced
    can seek treatment
  • Not Synced
That can be in the form of medicines
  • Not Synced
    like antidepressants,
  • Not Synced
    but that can also be
  • Not Synced
    in the form of therapy
  • Not Synced
A combination of both drugs and therapy
  • Not Synced
    is often recommended
  • Not Synced
Some mental illnesses may only last
  • Not Synced
for a certain period of time,
  • Not Synced
but many are lifelong health conditions
  • Not Synced
    People who are mentally ill
  • Not Synced
can live happy and productive lives,
  • Not Synced
but may just need some extra support
  • Not Synced
Like anyone living with a chronic illness,
  • Not Synced
it can be really difficult to talk about
  • Not Synced
    mental health and mental illness
  • Not Synced
Sometimes that can be because of
  • Not Synced
    something called stigma
  • Not Synced
    Stigmas are negative stereotypes
  • Not Synced
Stigmas can lead to discrimination and
  • Not Synced
    they can prevent people from
  • Not Synced
seeking the help that they need
  • Not Synced
One way we stigmatize mental illness
  • Not Synced
    is with our language
  • Not Synced
    For example,
  • Not Synced
    calling people crazy or psycho,
  • Not Synced
    is stigmatizing language
  • Not Synced
Even saying things like I am OCD
  • Not Synced
    can add to stigma
  • Not Synced
