Top 5 reasons to get a PhD if you're a nurse

  • 0:02 - 0:04
hey everybody will martin here so why
  • 0:04 - 0:05
should you get a phd why should anybody
  • 0:05 - 0:08
get a phd well i'm going to give you
  • 0:08 - 0:10
five reasons why i got a phd and they
  • 0:10 - 0:15
might be five reasons why you should too
  • 0:18 - 0:20
so number five a phd gives you the
  • 0:20 - 0:22
opportunity to establish a career in
  • 0:22 - 0:25
academia so if teaching is your thing if
  • 0:25 - 0:27
you have a passion for it if you have a
  • 0:27 - 0:30
talent for it then teaching is probably
  • 0:30 - 0:33
where you ought to be but in order to
  • 0:33 - 0:36
join the faculty at most universities
  • 0:36 - 0:39
you have to have a phd now some
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    universities will allow you to
  • 0:42 - 0:45
enter a tenure track program as a dnp
  • 0:45 - 0:47
but most universities at least at this
  • 0:47 - 0:51
point still require a phd so consider
  • 0:51 - 0:55
getting the phd if academia and teaching
  • 0:55 - 0:57
and becoming a professor is really your
  • 0:57 - 1:01
goal number four is research so
  • 1:01 - 1:04
getting a dnp for example which is a
  • 1:04 - 1:06
clinical doctorate will give you a lot
  • 1:06 - 1:09
of background in the science of nursing
  • 1:09 - 1:13
practice but not quite as much in how to
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    conduct research
  • 1:14 - 1:17
now some dnp programs might provide a
  • 1:17 - 1:19
little bit more than others in regard to
  • 1:19 - 1:21
research methodology but for the most
  • 1:21 - 1:24
part you have to go to a phd program in
  • 1:24 - 1:26
order to get the tools that you really
  • 1:26 - 1:29
need in order to do that independent
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    research
  • 1:30 - 1:33
that others will expect of you and by
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    conducting your own research you're
  • 1:35 - 1:37
adding to the body of nursing knowledge
  • 1:37 - 1:39
number three and this is an important
  • 1:39 - 1:42
one for me is it increases your options
  • 1:42 - 1:44
you know as you practice for a few years
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    as a nurse
  • 1:45 - 1:47
some of you may want to broaden your
  • 1:47 - 1:50
scope you may want to go in if different
  • 1:50 - 1:52
directions i mean let's face it nursing
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    is a hard job
  • 1:54 - 1:56
and working at the bedside for years on
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    end takes its toll
  • 1:57 - 2:00
having the option to do different things
  • 2:00 - 2:02
even if you decide at the end that
  • 2:02 - 2:03
you're going to stay at the bedside
  • 2:03 - 2:05
that's great but it's nice to have
  • 2:05 - 2:08
options i never wanted to be put into
  • 2:08 - 2:11
one area and not have the ability to get
  • 2:11 - 2:13
out and do different things with a phd
  • 2:13 - 2:16
it gives you the options to do things
  • 2:16 - 2:18
away from the bedside whether that be
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    administration or
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    consulting or legal consulting
  • 2:24 - 2:26
i mean you may not necessarily be an
  • 2:26 - 2:29
expert in all corners of nursing but
  • 2:29 - 2:30
    having a phd
  • 2:30 - 2:32
indicates to others that you have
  • 2:32 - 2:35
identified a goal and that goal is to
  • 2:35 - 2:38
complete the phd and you achieved it and
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    that's really
  • 2:39 - 2:43
    what most college degrees represent
  • 2:43 - 2:45
is that you have identified a goal and
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    you've reached it
  • 2:47 - 2:49
number two ties in with number three the
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    universal recognition of the phd
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    a dnp is a great
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    degree but
  • 2:56 - 2:58
it doesn't give you that research
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    experience that research training that
  • 3:01 - 3:05
you may need if you want to move into
  • 3:05 - 3:07
other parts of the health care industry
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    pharmaceuticals
  • 3:09 - 3:11
regardless of the person you're talking
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    to whether it's
  • 3:13 - 3:15
a lay person or someone else in the
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    health care industry everyone recognizes
  • 3:17 - 3:20
the phd as the terminal degree for
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    almost every profession now there's
  • 3:22 - 3:24
professional doctorates of course the md
  • 3:24 - 3:28
the do the dnp being another example
  • 3:28 - 3:31
but the phd is the pinnacle in the eyes
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    of many
  • 3:33 - 3:35
does it make you an expert nurse no of
  • 3:35 - 3:37
course not you're not an expert
  • 3:37 - 3:39
in all corners of nursing as a matter of
  • 3:39 - 3:42
fact you may not be an expert in any but
  • 3:42 - 3:44
what you do know how to do is you know
  • 3:44 - 3:46
at the end of your program how to
  • 3:46 - 3:48
conduct research and how to get answers
  • 3:48 - 3:51
to questions that bedside nurses may
  • 3:51 - 3:55
have so by doing that you're advancing
  • 3:55 - 3:58
the body of nursing knowledge and that's
  • 3:58 - 3:59
    extremely
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    rewarding and number one is
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    self-satisfaction
  • 4:03 - 4:05
now not everything is tied to money and
  • 4:05 - 4:07
a lot of people have asked me over the
  • 4:07 - 4:08
years do you get paid more because
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    you're a phd
  • 4:11 - 4:14
nurse practitioner and the answer is no
  • 4:14 - 4:16
insurance companies don't care that i
  • 4:16 - 4:18
have a phd i get reimbursed the same
  • 4:18 - 4:20
regardless of how many letters might be
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    after my name
  • 4:21 - 4:23
i didn't get the phd to try to earn more
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    money necessarily
  • 4:25 - 4:28
i got it to advance and increase my
  • 4:28 - 4:30
options and so far that's what it's been
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    doing
  • 4:31 - 4:33
it's given me the opportunity to get
  • 4:33 - 4:36
involved in administrative work and to
  • 4:36 - 4:39
acquire protected time at work so that
  • 4:39 - 4:41
at least in my case i'm not at the
  • 4:41 - 4:45
bedside as often as i used to be
  • 4:45 - 4:45
    and
  • 4:45 - 4:48
i like that i like to do different
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    things all the time and
  • 4:51 - 4:53
let's face it if you're working in
  • 4:53 - 4:55
a high stress setting whether it's
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    critical care emergency department
  • 4:57 - 5:00
almost anywhere you need that time away
  • 5:00 - 5:03
and the phd has given me the ability to
  • 5:03 - 5:06
do some different things and yet still
  • 5:06 - 5:08
be in touch clinically so remember the
  • 5:08 - 5:10
phd is a statement to yourself and to
  • 5:10 - 5:12
everyone else that you have identified a
  • 5:12 - 5:15
goal and you've achieved it it's a big
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    goal it's not easy
  • 5:17 - 5:18
    and
  • 5:18 - 5:20
for those that have gotten a master's
  • 5:20 - 5:23
degree or a dnp you've got an idea of
  • 5:23 - 5:25
what you're up against it's just more
  • 5:25 - 5:26
    and more of it
  • 5:26 - 5:30
and uh your writing for example is going
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    to be
  • 5:31 - 5:34
uh at an another level and it you are
  • 5:34 - 5:37
    going to be expected to
  • 5:37 - 5:40
write and communicate to a higher level
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    than you ever have before
  • 5:42 - 5:43
    and
  • 5:43 - 5:45
regardless of where you are in your
  • 5:45 - 5:48
career or your age it's always good i
  • 5:48 - 5:51
think to push yourself and try to make
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    yourself a little bit better
  • 5:53 - 5:54
    and
  • 5:54 - 5:57
obviously getting into a phd program
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    will do that or
  • 5:59 - 6:01
you'll quit one or the other
  • 6:01 - 6:03
and that's the goal with anything that
  • 6:03 - 6:06
you're doing is to just get better at it
  • 6:06 - 6:07
    and to increase
  • 6:07 - 6:10
the number of tools in your toolbox
  • 6:10 - 6:11
    so
  • 6:11 - 6:15
with that those are the five reasons why
  • 6:15 - 6:16
i got a phd and i think there are five
  • 6:16 - 6:18
good reasons why you may want to get a
  • 6:18 - 6:21
phd as well i'm gonna do more of these
  • 6:21 - 6:24
top fives so until next time i'll talk
  • 6:24 - 6:27
to you again please if you can subscribe
  • 6:27 - 6:30

  • 6:30 - 6:32
below so please consider commenting as
  • 6:32 - 6:36
well have a good day thanks
  • 6:36 - 6:42
    [Music]
  • 6:58 - 7:01
    [Music]
  • 7:04 - 7:06
    you
