Report: Varoufakis & Horvat launch Democracy in Europe Movement 2025
-
0:19 - 0:21Welcome to acTVism Munich!
-
0:21 - 0:22I am your host Zain Raza,
-
0:22 - 0:24reporting from the Volksbühne Berlin,
-
0:24 - 0:26where a new movement is starting,
-
0:26 - 0:29initiated by the former Finance
Minister of Greece, Yanis Varoufakis -
0:29 - 0:32and Srecko Horvat, a philosopher and activist.
-
0:32 - 0:35This movement is called "Democracy in Europe 25"
-
0:35 - 0:37A lot of topics will be discussed today:
-
0:37 - 0:40from the political economy of Europe, foreign policy,
-
0:40 - 0:42and the refugee crisis.
-
0:42 - 0:45The invitation to this event has
been extended to feminist, -
0:45 - 0:49grass-roots activists, journalists,
and members of trade unions. -
0:49 - 0:52We will be talking to the organisers and participants
-
0:52 - 0:54to provide an overview of this
event – so stay tuned! -
0:56 - 1:01Before we start with the first session
I will give the word to Yanis Varoufakis – -
1:01 - 1:05Without further ado, let the sessions start –
-
1:07 - 1:13This is the ground on which European imagines its unity.
-
1:13 - 1:16What we witness is one of the main problems,
-
1:16 - 1:20is more that what multinational
corporations do on the ground. -
1:20 - 1:26We are confronted with a
disarticulation of the very institutional -
1:26 - 1:32arrangements that sustaining
the European governance. -
1:32 - 1:36A real Europe integration must be social-stated
– or it will not be. -
1:37 - 1:39We should talk about, non-profit,
independent grass-roots-media, -
1:39 - 1:43which is based on worker cooperate principles
is in the hands of the community. -
1:43 - 1:47We do not believe in a division of
labour between thinking and acting. -
1:47 - 1:50We need to talk about the duty
of care that the state as, -
1:50 - 1:53not only to protect against spying,
but also to built alternatives -
1:53 - 1:58that are designed, by design in fact, to resist violations of rights.
-
2:06 - 2:09A lot of people are sceptical about the future
-
2:09 - 2:13although, right now, Bernie Sanders is coming in the US
-
2:13 - 2:20– there's a lot of criticism about him–,
Jeremy Corbyn broke through the ranks in the UK, -
2:20 - 2:23and you have some changes coming
in Spain and Portugal. -
2:23 - 2:27Do you see this as a broader
positive change in terms -
2:27 - 2:32of our future? Do you have any
hopes for a better world? -
2:32 - 2:36Yes, regarding hopes, the elites
of the European Union are -
2:36 - 2:42destroying any hope in
the future of the EU but if there is -
2:42 - 2:48still hope in these days, it's thanks to the activists,
for example activists -
2:48 - 2:54who are active in the solidarity
movement for refugees and -
2:54 - 3:00they are organising real concrete solidary
action. They hold the flag -
3:00 - 3:04for democracy and humanity in these days.
-
3:04 - 3:08What is new here, I think
–I hope at least–, what is new is that we don't -
3:08 - 3:12only include movements, we don't only include trade
unions, classical political -
3:12 - 3:14parties. But, for example, during
these meetings today we -
3:14 - 3:20had people who are activists
of Tor or WikiLeaks. Never -
3:20 - 3:23before I have seen that so many
people who come from the -
3:23 - 3:26field of technology were interested
in bringing more democracy. -
3:26 - 3:28And we know there is no
democracy without technology – -
3:28 - 3:32actually, technology could help
us today to bring more democracy. -
3:32 - 3:35So what we can see, only from this first meeting
-
3:35 - 3:36but also other meetings and people
-
3:36 - 3:43who've supported the Manifesto,
for example: from Ken Loach, Eva Illouz,Toni Negri, Julian Assange, -
3:43 - 3:48we can see that people got together,
who usually weren't together, -
3:48 - 3:52so we also have people from Podemos,
people from Front de gauche as well. -
3:52 - 3:57The Labour Party is very interested
and supportive of DiEM25. -
3:57 - 4:01What we can see is that we are really in a political momentum currently, in the EU,
-
4:01 - 4:06where I think that we can go only in one
direction, and one direction is democracy, -
4:06 - 4:14or the other direction will be the dystopia,
which will be very similar to the dystopia during the first World Wars and second World War. -
4:14 - 4:21There was some criticism voiced earlier in terms of how many women participated on the panel today.
-
4:21 - 4:29Did that appear to you? And are there
any other criticisms that you would try to voice to this movement that could help in constructive ways? -
4:30 - 4:38During the afternoon I found a number
of women who took the floor, -
4:38 - 4:43so I was not that much impressed
by an injustice in that concern. -
4:43 - 4:49I think it is difficult to bring together so many people
-
4:49 - 4:54their so committed ideas and
then really to integrate that intellectually. -
4:54 - 5:00I got the impression that the discussion was more
-
5:00 - 5:02understood as a kind of contribution to
-
5:02 - 5:05concrete activities and initiatives of DiEM25.
-
5:05 - 5:10Through this convergence of movements,
of movements that are powerful -
5:10 - 5:15but which tend to shrivel and
die when left on their own, -
5:15 - 5:20this convergence with existing,
established organisations -
5:20 - 5:23from previous generations
and centuries of struggles -
5:23 - 5:25– like the trade unions, for instance –,
-
5:25 - 5:30it is the only possible source of
hope for the single mother -
5:30 - 5:36that is affected, unemployed,
58-year-old who is unemployable, -
5:36 - 5:38given the technological change,
-
5:38 - 5:41to the people in Greece who have to survive,
-
5:41 - 5:45whole families on one puny little
pension which is being cut, -
5:45 - 5:48to the people in Ireland who've
been battered for years -
5:48 - 5:53by austerity and now are coalescing
around one issue: water. -
5:53 - 5:57So, as not to allow this kind
of movement to die out, -
5:57 - 6:00we need to bring them all together,
-
6:00 - 6:02with the established institutions
-
6:02 - 6:04to produce the possibility of hope.
-
6:04 - 6:10The entire day was filled with a lot af discussions, constructive proposals, exchanges, networking.
-
6:10 - 6:14The movement is in its early stages at the moment
-
6:14 - 6:16and we have yet to see what comes out of this.
-
6:16 - 6:18So, stay tuned with acTVism Munich!

- Report: Varoufakis & Horvat launch Democracy in Europe Movement 2025
- Description:
-
In this report, acTVism Munich provides an overview of the activities that took place on the 9th of February, 2016, the day when the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 was launched by Yanis Varoufakis and Srecko Horvat. This report aims to give the public a transparent view by documenting the activities and interviewing organizers and participants. Interview partners include Yanis Varoufakis, Srecko Horvat, Katja Kipping and Gesine Schwan.
Projects for February 2016:
Other projects in February include providing a voice to grassroots activism that will take place in Munich around the 52th Security Conference scheduled for the 12th-14th February. On 15th of February we will release an interview with Prof. Noam Chomsky, who will talk about the mainstream corporate media and how & why they undermine grassroots movements & activism.
Unfortunately, acTVism Munich has very limited funds and requires your immediate support to materialize these projects. From transportation, lodging, food, production, translation, and other costs, given our scarce resources, it will be a very difficult task to execute.
