DAY 24 - A Surprisingly SPECTACULAR Line!

    (POP MUSIC)
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    GLOVESTRAINS: Honestly,
the views out of these windows
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    are spectacular!
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    Hey, everyone!
    GLovesTrains 'ere.
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    And welcome to "Exploring Yorkshire
    and the Humber by Train"
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    (BACKGROUND CHATTER)
    day 24.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    I am just going
    to four stations today.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    But in doing that,
    it is gonna pretty much
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    take me the whole day.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    I'm off to Scunthorpe, Crowle,
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    Althorpe and Thorne South.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
Now initially, I was gonna do
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    a really fast changeover
    at Doncaster.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
However, when I got on this train,
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    I realised it was
    going through to Scunthorpe.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    I thought, "You know what?
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    "I may as well just
    stay on to Scunthorpe
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    "and reverse the order
    of the stations."
  • 0:48 - 0:50
And in doing that as well,
    it means that
  • 0:50 - 0:52
there won't be a risk of me
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    missing that Doncaster connection.
  • 0:54 - 0:58
I am on the first train.
    It's 185146.
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 1:07 - 1:08
Oh, I need to wake up now.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
    That ride was very relaxing!
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    But...I am glad that
    I decided to change
  • 1:12 - 1:14
my plan last minute as well.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
Because we are over twenty minutes
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    arriving into Scunthorpe.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
Because we were sitting at Sheffield
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    for absolutely ages
    due to an incident...
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    on the platform there.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    But yeah, I definitely
    would not have made
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    the connection at Doncaster.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    Scunthorpe is run by
    Transpennine Express.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
    It's got two platforms
  • 1:37 - 1:39
and Northern Trains also call here.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
I think we were also trailing
  • 1:42 - 1:43
the next train that I'm getting on
  • 1:43 - 1:45
as we came in to Scunthorpe.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    Because it's currently sitting
    over on platform 2.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    So I'm not gonna risk
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    going anywhere
    outside of the station.
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    I'm just gonna get myself
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    over and...pretty much
    onto the next train.
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    I've just come into
    this little waiting room.
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
    It smells of...
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    (EXHALES)
  • 2:07 - 2:10
..kind of like very mild sweets.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 2:12 - 2:13
    (POP MUSIC)
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
  • 2:14 - 2:16
It is a little chilly outside
    so I am just gonna
  • 2:16 - 2:18
sit on the train for a little while
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
before it sets off from Scunthorpe.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    It is 150214.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    I thought it might be a 150
    going down here.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    I did wonder as well
    about the little
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    bits of artwork...
    on the livery.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
There's like some flowers and stuff.
    But it's to represent
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    the Bentham Line
    and its dementia-friendly railway.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    Okay, I did just have
    a giggle to myself then.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    Because I did just hear
    how the train announcements
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    pronounce this station
    completely different
  • 2:53 - 2:55
to how I pronounced it before.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    So definitely
    the Mispronunciation Police
  • 2:57 - 3:00
are gonna be out in force
    during this vlog.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
But yeah, the train said "croal."
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    And I'm saying "crowlie."
    (LAUGHS)
  • 3:05 - 3:06
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    G: I really do like
    these yellow railings
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    here on platform two.
    And beyond those,
  • 3:14 - 3:15
there is a bit of flowing water.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    (TRAFFIC NOISE)
Don't ask me what it is.
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    It's not that clearly labelled
    on the map!
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    There's also some basic shelters
    within the station.
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    (WIND NOISE)
I was hoping for an information display,
  • 3:25 - 3:27
but I don't seem to be able
    to see one anywhere.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    (POP MUSIC)
    (TRAIN WHIZZES PAST)
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    Okay, it has started raining
    which is not really ideal.
  • 3:38 - 3:40
But at least I've got a hood.
  • 3:40 - 3:41
I have brought my umbrella as well,
  • 3:41 - 3:44
    but I don't think I need to
    get that out just yet.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    "crowlie" or Crowle,
    whatever you wanna call it,
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    it's got two platforms
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    and it is operated by
    Northern Trains.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    There is a very limited
    TPE service as well.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
I think it's just one train
  • 3:55 - 3:56
    like upwards in the morning
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    and then one train downwards
  • 3:59 - 4:00
    in the evening.
  • 4:00 - 4:01
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 4:05 - 4:06
Right, I've got over an hour here.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
I really need to put my hood up,
    to be honest.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    (TRAFFIC NOISE)
But I'm gonna go have a walk.
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    There is something called
    Clearwater Lake.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
Hopefully, I'll be able to get
some sort of a glimpse of that.
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    But more importantly,
    I wanna try
  • 4:16 - 4:17
and find a shop to get a drink.
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    The only drink I've brought
    is in a can.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    And I don't really wanna
    be walking around
  • 4:22 - 4:23
holding a can and a camera
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    'cause that's a bit of a farce!
  • 4:25 - 4:26
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 4:34 - 4:35
I've made it back with literally
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    (WIND NOISE)
like two, three minutes to spare.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    Didn't realise before
with not being on it but
  • 4:39 - 4:41
platform 1 does have bouncy platforms.
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    And I am wondering
    if the next train
  • 4:43 - 4:45
I'm going to be getting on
    back up the line is
  • 4:46 - 4:48
gonna be the same 150 as before.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
    Yep, it is 150214.
  • 4:50 - 4:51
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    (TRAIN ENGINE NOISE)
Honestly, the views out of these windows
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    are spectacular!
  • 4:58 - 5:02
It's full of...They're full of fields
    and flowing water.
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    Just what I like.
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    So yeah,
when you're riding down this line,
  • 5:04 - 5:06
you literally don't wanna look anywhere
  • 5:06 - 5:07
    but out of the window.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    (POP MUSIC)
    (TRAIN DOOR BEEPS)
  • 5:10 - 5:11
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 5:13 - 5:14
(SINGS) ♫ When you're at Althorpe
  • 5:14 - 5:15
    ♫ You put your knickers
    on your head
  • 5:16 - 5:17
    ♫ You put your
    knickers on your head
  • 5:17 - 5:19
    ♫ You put your knickers
    on your head
  • 5:19 - 5:20
    ♫ When you're at Althorpe
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    ♫ You put your knickers
    on your head
  • 5:22 - 5:23
    (WIND NOISE)
    ♫ And you shout ♫
  • 5:23 - 5:25
    (SHOUTS) Squishy boobies!
  • 5:25 - 5:26
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    (TRAFFIC NOISE)
I'm at Althorpe. It's pretty windy here.
  • 5:31 - 5:33
    (WIND NOISE)
It might be because we are very close
  • 5:33 - 5:34
    to the River Trent.
  • 5:34 - 5:37
I'll see in a bit if I can
get a little glimpse of that.
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    Although I did catch
    a beautiful shot of it
  • 5:40 - 5:41
    on the train down before.
  • 5:42 - 5:44
As you can tell, I am doing a back-forth
    with these stations because
  • 5:44 - 5:47
    the Northern services down here
    are every two hours.
  • 5:47 - 5:48
So it just makes it a bit quicker for me
  • 5:48 - 5:50
    to visit the stations.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    Although when you do have
    an even number of stations
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    you got to go to,
    there is inevitably one
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    that you have to have
    the full two-hour wait at.
  • 5:56 - 5:59
So I am saving that till last.
  • 5:59 - 6:00
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    I am just taking shelter
from the wind a little bit.
  • 6:05 - 6:07
But Althorpe has got two platforms,
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    it's served by Northern Trains
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    and you've also got
    that limited TPE service.
  • 6:12 - 6:13
There is a ticket machine here.
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    (TRAFFIC NOISE)
You've got a shelter on either platform.
  • 6:15 - 6:18
    Both shelters, particuarly that one
    on the other platform,
  • 6:18 - 6:18
which I can't wait to go in,
  • 6:19 - 6:20
    do look quite interesting looking.
  • 6:21 - 6:23
There are no information screens again.
  • 6:23 - 6:25
So I'm gonna just have to
keep an eye on the time.
  • 6:25 - 6:26
    I'm basically just waiting
  • 6:26 - 6:28
    for that same train again
  • 6:28 - 6:30
to come back down from Scunthorpe.
  • 6:30 - 6:31
But it does sit at Scunthorpe
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    for thereabouts half an hour,
  • 6:33 - 6:35
so I have got a decent enough
  • 6:35 - 6:36
amount of time here at Althorpe.
  • 6:36 - 6:37
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 6:42 - 6:43
    (TRAFFIC NOISE)
Right next to the railway line
  • 6:43 - 6:46
    is quite a busy road.
    But next to that
  • 6:46 - 6:47
is this path that you can
  • 6:48 - 6:49
    walk along.
    And it takes you across
  • 6:49 - 6:51
    the River Trent which...
  • 6:52 - 6:53
    yeah, absolutely beautiful!
  • 6:53 - 6:55
I'ma just have a walk across it
    for the fun of it
  • 6:55 - 6:57
    and then yeah, probably just
    head back to the station!
  • 6:57 - 6:58
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 7:17 - 7:19
G: Just got off the final train of the day.
  • 7:19 - 7:21
    It was 150214 again.
  • 7:21 - 7:22
Do you reckon that train just goes
  • 7:22 - 7:24
back and forth all day long?
    (LAUGHS)
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    Bit like me! But anyways,
  • 7:27 - 7:28
    I'm now at Thorne South.
  • 7:28 - 7:30
    Can't believe I'm at
    the final station already!
  • 7:30 - 7:32
    Like seriously,
where has the time gone at all?
  • 7:32 - 7:34
    But...my immediate thought is
  • 7:34 - 7:36
    this is definitely the quieter
  • 7:36 - 7:38
of the two Thorne stations, isn't it?
    (LAUGHS)
  • 7:38 - 7:40
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 7:44 - 7:46
Great to see at Thorne South
  • 7:46 - 7:48
    there are information displays.
  • 7:48 - 7:51
    There's also these silver shelters.
  • 7:51 - 7:52
But what's most catching my eye
  • 7:52 - 7:54
    and what I saw
    when I passed this station
  • 7:54 - 7:56
earlier on today on the train
  • 7:56 - 7:59
are the long yellow and blue ramps.
  • 7:59 - 8:02
    Which of course
I'm gonna go and have a run down.
  • 8:02 - 8:03
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 8:12 - 8:14
    Okay, that's actually quite odd.
  • 8:14 - 8:16
    So when you come down
    the stairs or the ramp
  • 8:16 - 8:18
    on the other side,
    it doesn't actually lead you
  • 8:18 - 8:19
    straight onto the platform.
  • 8:20 - 8:22
It leads you more to like
    the outside of the station.
  • 8:22 - 8:24
    Mean you have to walk
    up another ramp
  • 8:24 - 8:26
to actually get onto the platform.
  • 8:26 - 8:27
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 8:29 - 8:31
    (AUDIO MUFFLED)
I am just making my way to a park
  • 8:31 - 8:33
    called Toll Bar Leisure Park.
  • 8:34 - 8:36
    In doing so,
    I am just walking alongside
  • 8:36 - 8:38
    this piece of flowing water.
  • 8:39 - 8:40
Again, I've looked at the map
  • 8:40 - 8:42
    and it doesn't seem
    to be labelled with anything.
  • 8:42 - 8:44
Alls I know is that it's connected up
  • 8:44 - 8:47
to the Stainforth & Keadby Canal,
    I think it's called.
  • 8:47 - 8:48
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 8:57 - 8:58
    (AUDIO CLEAR)
Okay, I've just come away from the park
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    and had a little wander
    along the canal.
  • 9:00 - 9:02
    I think it actually
    may have stopped raining now?
  • 9:03 - 9:05
    Keep the umbrella up,
    just in case.
  • 9:05 - 9:08
    But I certainly would recommend
    coming for a ride
  • 9:08 - 9:10
    on the line between Doncaster
    and Scunthorpe.
  • 9:10 - 9:13
    Like...it's actually taken me
    rather by surprise
  • 9:13 - 9:15
    riding this line today
because the views out the window
  • 9:15 - 9:18
    genuinely they are
    absolutely phenomenal.
  • 9:18 - 9:20
    It is beautiful along here!
  • 9:20 - 9:23
And also, all the Northern services
    that I've ridden on,
  • 9:23 - 9:25
    they have been super quiet.
  • 9:25 - 9:27
    Like literally, I was like
    one of three people
  • 9:27 - 9:29
    on all of those trains.
  • 9:29 - 9:31
    So, yeah. I've had
    an absolutely wonderful...
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    I actually...
    I literally can't believe it's over.
  • 9:33 - 9:35
    It's...it's gone so quick, honestly!
  • 9:36 - 9:37
    Thank you very much
    for watching, everyone!
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    Byesie byes!
  • 9:39 - 9:40
    (POP MUSIC)
    (FOOTSTEPS)
  • 9:40 - 9:42
    (POP MUSIC)
  • 9:50 - 9:52
    (MUSIC ENDS)
  • 9:52 - 9:55
    'Cause there are...
    (TRAIN WHIZZES PAST)
  • 9:55 - 9:57
    There are two...two-hourly...
    (LAUGHS)
  • 9:57 - 9:59
    Because the...
