  • 0:06 - 0:08
    Welcome to the Deeper Wider
    Group study,
  • 0:08 - 0:11
and thank you so much for interrupting
    whatever you were discussing
  • 0:11 - 0:15
to spend a few weeks talking
    about money, specifically stewardship.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
    One reason I wanted
    our entire network of churches
  • 0:19 - 0:21
to get on the same page
    in their small group
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    is because of an experience
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    Sandra and I had
    early on in our marriage.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    You may be familiar
    with Crown financial study.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    Crown is a group curriculum
that covers much of what your group
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    is going to be discussing
    for the next few weeks.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
In year two of our marriage,
    a couple invited us
  • 0:38 - 0:41
to participate in a Crown group
    in their home.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    Sandra and I were both
    raised in church.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    We were both taught
    to tithe as children,
  • 0:46 - 0:50
so giving 10% of our income
to the church was a childhood habit
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    that carried on into adulthood
    and into our marriage.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
But neither of us had ever done
    a really deep dive
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    into what the New Testament
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    and Jesus, in particular,
    taught about generosity.
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    Of course I had heard
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    dozens of sermons related
to God and money and giving.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
And since I was a giver,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    those messages were more affirming
    than maybe challenging.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    But those Monday nights
  • 1:14 - 1:16
with that group shifted our thinking.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    It was so impactful
    that Sandra and I
  • 1:18 - 1:22
went on to lead three groups
    through that Crown curriculum.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
Of course there were several takeaways,
  • 1:24 - 1:30
but perhaps the biggest takeaway is
actually the focus of this first session.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    It’s summarized in 1 Chronicles 29.
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    The author writes, “Everything
in heaven and earth is yours.
  • 1:37 - 1:41
    Yours, Lord, is the kingdom;
you are exalted as head over all.
  • 1:41 - 1:47
    Wealth and honor come from you;
you are the ruler of all things.”
  • 1:47 - 1:51
    Here’s what Jim Dowda* does:
    “everything” and “all things”.
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    That was a game changer.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
As I said, I was raised
to give a portion of my income
  • 1:55 - 1:58
to God’s work in the world
    through my local church.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
    But, honestly, I had never
    really considered the fact
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    that everything belongs to God,
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    not just a percentage
of my income that I chose to give.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    Another surprising takeaway
    from that study was this:
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    How contagious generosity can be.
  • 2:13 - 2:15
There were two couples in our group
  • 2:15 - 2:19
    whose generosity stories
    were challenging and inspiring.
  • 2:19 - 2:23
    We already considered ourselves
    to be generous Christians,
  • 2:23 - 2:24
but in that group, we discovered
  • 2:24 - 2:29
    the difference between giving
    and living a generous life.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
One of the things I hope you’ll do
    over the next few sessions
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    is share your personal
    generosity story.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
If you don’t have one, my hunch is,
  • 2:38 - 2:42
when you hear others in your group talk
about how they learned to be generous,
  • 2:42 - 2:46
    it’s going to inspire you
    to become, well, more generous.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    And if you fear that,
    fear not.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    Generous people are happy people.
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    In fact, some would argue
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    that generous people
    are the happiest people.
  • 2:55 - 2:59
If you grew up attending church, you may
push back on this level of transparency
  • 2:59 - 3:02
in light of something that Jesus said.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
On one occasion, Jesus said -
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    in relationship
to giving and making donations -
  • 3:06 - 3:11
He said, “don’t let your left hand
know what your right hand is doing”.
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    And many Christians, unfortunately,
    have taken that to mean
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    that we should never
    talk about our generosity.
  • 3:17 - 3:18
But that was not his point.
  • 3:18 - 3:22
His point was that we shouldn’t
    brag about our generosity,
  • 3:22 - 3:24
which, of course, you don’t do.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
    For the next few weeks,
In the safety of your circle,
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    I want to challenge you
    or encourage you
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    to open up about
    your personal generosity.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
How did you learn to be generous?
Or maybe why you’re not generous.
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    Perhaps why the topic
    of generosity scares you,
  • 3:38 - 3:42
or why it used to scare you
    but it doesn’t anymore.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    Talk about how
    your childhood experiences
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    impacted your view of money.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    In other words,
    just put it out there.
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    That’s what small group
    is all about, right?
  • 3:51 - 3:53
The other thing is this -
    throughout this series,
  • 3:53 - 3:54
    we’re going to circle back
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    to the difference between
    average American generosity
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    and generosity that’s taught
    in the New Testament.
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    My hunch is this -
    you’re already a generous person
  • 4:03 - 4:06
the way that the average American
    defines generosity,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    but over the course
    of the next five weeks,
  • 4:08 - 4:12
    you’ll be challenged to rethink
    your definition of generosity.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    And not only generosity.
  • 4:14 - 4:17
    You’ll be challenged to adopt
a different perspective on your income
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    your legacy and your opportunity
  • 4:20 - 4:24
    to participate with your Savior
    in expanding his kingdom.
  • 4:24 - 4:25
So, this is a big deal.
  • 4:25 - 4:29
And it’s a bit emotional because,
well, of course money is emotional.
  • 4:29 - 4:33
Jesus knew that, and he knew
that we would all be tempted
  • 4:33 - 4:38
to place our trust in riches rather
than in the One who richly provides,
  • 4:38 - 4:42
    which is the perfect place
    to begin your discussion
  • 4:42 - 4:45
    with the question I introduced
in Week 1 of the message series:
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    Whose is it anyway?
  • 4:47 - 4:48
    Here’s the thing -
  • 4:48 - 4:53
    if you embrace the paradigm-shifting
idea that God owns it all
  • 4:53 - 4:57
and that you are merely a manager,
it will truly change your life.
  • 4:57 - 5:00
    And not just the way
you view and manage your money.
  • 5:00 - 5:05
This shift in thinking will impact
just about every facet of your life.
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    Again, thanks for participating.
  • 5:07 - 5:11
And now I will turn it over
to your more than capable leader.
