The ultimate guide to Effexor: Expert insights revealed

  • 0:03 - 0:05
    Everybody.
    Welcome to another episode
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    The Anxious Resistance.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
Today I am going to be talking
    about Effexor,
  • 0:09 - 0:12
also known by its generic name
    of Venlafaxine.
  • 0:12 - 0:17
    So, Effexor is an antidepressant
    of the SNRI class.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
It has been used to treat
    multiple conditions such as
  • 0:20 - 0:24
    major depressive disorder,
    generalized anxiety disorder,
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    panic disorder, social anxiety disorder,
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    chronic pain, and hot flashes.
  • 0:29 - 0:29
    In 2020,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
it was the 43rd most prescribed medication
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    in the United States
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    with 15 million prescriptions.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
So, this is a very common medication.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
So, let's talk a little bit about
    the history of Effexor.
  • 0:42 - 0:46
So, Effexor was approved for use
in the United States in 1993.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
So, it's been around for 30 years now.
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    How does Effexor work?
  • 0:51 - 0:57
Effexor, or Venlafaxine, is a serotonin
    norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor.
  • 0:57 - 1:02
So, it selectively inhibits the reuptake
    of both norepinephrine and serotonin,
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    This increases the levels
    of these neurotransmitters
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    in the synaptic cleft.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    The higher levels
    of these neurotransmitters
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    are linked to better mood
    and less depression.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
What kind of side effects are there
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    when taking Effexor?
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    So, side effects may include,
  • 1:16 - 1:18
but are not limited to this list of
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    asthenia, headache, somnolence,
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    dizziness, nervousness, insomnia,
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    anxiety, tremor, abnormal dreams, pain
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    Paresthesia, agitation, weakness, syncope,
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    taste alteration, apathy, confusion,
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    hypertension, hypotension, tachycardia,
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    Vasod… Okay, there's a lot, y'all.
  • 1:37 - 1:41
There's a lot of side effects
    to this medication.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
A lot of these can be only experienced
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    at really high doses.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
A lot of these you may get initially,
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    and then will go away
  • 1:49 - 1:52
So really, there's a lot of side effects.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
It's like one of those medications like,
  • 1:54 - 1:55
where they blabber on the gibberish for,
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    five minutes of side effects.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
Chances of you getting most of these,
    is very slim
  • 2:00 - 2:03
So, there's a few that maybe you'll get,
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    maybe you'll get some dizziness,
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    maybe you'll get some tiredness.
  • 2:07 - 2:11
Definitely with all these kinds of
    SSRI, SNRI medications
  • 2:11 - 2:13
you may have difficulty with your libido,
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    may have difficulty reaching orgasm,
    that kind of thing.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
You need to be aware of a couple specific,
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    like, dangerous things
  • 2:20 - 2:22
when it comes to these medications,
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    the first being serotonin syndrome.
  • 2:24 - 2:26
So, drugs that work on serotonin
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    like venlafaxine, increase someone's risk
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    of developing serotonin syndrome.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
It happens when there's too much serotonin
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    and the symptoms include
a high heart rate, sweating, headache,
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    agitation, restlessness, anxiety,
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    goosebumps and rigid muscles.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    There are some severe symptoms,
  • 2:42 - 2:44
if this gets really bad, which includes
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    a high fever, seizures,
    irregular heart rhythm
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    and loss of consciousness.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    If you suspect that
    you're having serotonin syndrome,
  • 2:51 - 2:53
you should go to the hospital
  • 2:53 - 2:55
or be checked out by your provider.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
So again, you should especially be careful
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    with serotonin syndrome
    if you're on multiple medications
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    that increase levels of Serotonin
  • 3:03 - 3:09
    like other SSRI/SNRI medications,
    buspirone, hydroxyzine,
  • 3:09 - 3:12
    other antidepressants, antipsychotics.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
There's quite a few, so be careful.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
But again, this is an effective medication
  • 3:17 - 3:18
and it's been used for a long time
  • 3:18 - 3:21
to treat anxiety, to treat depression,
  • 3:21 - 3:24
    to treat those conditions,
    I mentioned before.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
So don't be dissuaded by the side effects.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    These are possible, not guaranteed.
  • 3:30 - 3:34
So also, with Effexor there is also a bit
    of a withdrawal syndrome.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    Antidepressant medications
    like Venlafaxine*
  • 3:36 - 3:38
need to be tapered off in order
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    to avoid or mitigate withdrawal.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    Symptoms of withdrawal include
  • 3:42 - 3:45
    dizziness, aches, chills and headaches.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
So, you need to come off of this slowly
  • 3:47 - 3:48
if you're coming off of it,
  • 3:48 - 3:50
especially if you've been on it
    for a while
  • 3:50 - 3:52
and especially if you're at a high dose.
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    So, what are some
    positives of venlafaxine?
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    You've heard, some negatives,
    some side effects
  • 3:57 - 4:00
Again, if your doctor and you patient
  • 4:00 - 4:03
it may be way worth it to put up
  • 4:03 - 4:05
with some of these side effects,
  • 4:05 - 4:07
which likely you won't experience many,
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    you'll experience maybe a few
  • 4:09 - 4:11
and a lot of them will obey over time.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    Positives or pros of venlafaxine
  • 4:13 - 4:16
is a very effective medication for
    anxiety and depression
  • 4:16 - 4:18
and it's been around for several decades.
  • 4:18 - 4:22
    So, it’s very well researched
and can be used to great effect.
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    So,
  • 4:23 - 4:24
what are some negative or cons
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    of Venlafaxine?
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    Like other antidepressants,
    can cause sexual dysfunction,
  • 4:29 - 4:32
it can also make suicidal ideation
    or depression worse
  • 4:32 - 4:36
and this more likely in young adults
    and children.
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    So, overall.
    What’s our in-venlafaxine use?
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    Venlafaxine is a well- treatment
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    for anxiety and depression
  • 4:43 - 4:44
as well as several other conditions,
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    and it’s considered
    a second line treatment.
  • 4:47 - 4:49
So, usually you go to the SSRIS first
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    and you go to SNRIS:
  • 4:51 - 4:56
Effexor, like Pristiq, like um Cymbalta,
  • 4:56 - 4:57
there are a couple others out there,
  • 4:57 - 4:59
depending on what country you live in.
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    Good medication.
  • 5:00 - 5:01
