The ultimate guide to Effexor: Expert insights revealed

  • 0:03 - 0:05
    Everybody.
    Welcome to another episode
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    The Anxious Resistance.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
Today I am going to be talking
    about Effexor,
  • 0:09 - 0:12
also known by its generic name
    of Venlafaxine.
  • 0:12 - 0:17
    So, Effexor is an antidepressant
    of the SNRI class.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
It has been used to treat
    multiple conditions such as
  • 0:20 - 0:24
    major depressive disorder,
    generalized anxiety disorder,
  • 0:24 - 0:29
    panic disorder, social anxiety disorder,
    chronic pain, and hot flashes.
  • 0:29 - 0:29
    In 2020,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    it was the 43rd most
    prescribed medication
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    in the United States,
    with 15 million prescriptions.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    So, this is a very
    commonly use medication.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
So, let us talk a little bit about
    the history of Effexor.
  • 0:42 - 0:46
So, Effexor was approved for use
in the United States in 1993.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
So, it is been around for
    30 years now.
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    How does Effexor work?
  • 0:51 - 0:57
Effexor, or Venlafaxine, is a serotonin
    norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor.
  • 0:57 - 1:02
So, it selectively inhibits the reuptake
    of both norepinephrine and serotonin,
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    This increases the levels
    of these neurotransmitters
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    in the synaptic cleft.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    The higher levels
    of these neurotransmitters
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    are linked to better mood
    and less depression.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
What kind of side effects are there
    when taking Effexor?
  • 1:14 - 1:18
    So, side effects may include,
but are not limited to this list of
  • 1:18 - 1:22
    asthenia, headache, somnolence,
    dizziness, nervousness,
  • 1:22 - 1:27
    insomnia, anxiety, tremor,
    abnormal dreams, paresthesia,
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    agitation, weakness,
    syncope, taste alteration, apathy,
  • 1:30 - 1:34
    confusion, hypertension,
    hypotension, tachycardia,
  • 1:34 - 1:37
Vasod… Okay, there is a lot, you all.
  • 1:37 - 1:41
There is a lot of side effects
    to this medication.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
A lot of these can be only experienced
    at really high doses.
  • 1:44 - 1:49
A lot of these you may get initially,
    and then will go away
  • 1:49 - 1:51
So really, there is a lot of side effects.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
It is like one of those medications
    where they blabber
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    on the gibberish for,
    five minutes of side effects.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
Chances of you getting most of these,
    is very slim.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
There is a few that maybe you will get,
  • 2:03 - 2:06
maybe you will get some dizziness,
    some tiredness.
  • 2:07 - 2:11
Definitely with all these kinds of
    SSRI, SNRI medications
  • 2:11 - 2:13
you may have difficulty with your libido,
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    difficulty reaching orgasm,
    that kind of things.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
You need to be aware of a couple specific
    dangerous things
  • 2:20 - 2:22
when it comes to these medications.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    The first being serotonin syndrome.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    Drugs that work on serotonin
    like Venlafaxine
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    increase someone's risk
    of developing serotonin syndrome.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    This occurs when there is
    too much serotonin
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    and the symptoms include
a high heart rate, sweating, headache,
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    agitation, restlessness, anxiety,
    goosebumps and rigid muscles.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    There are some severe symptoms,
    if this gets really bad,
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    which includes
    a high fever, seizures,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    irregular heart rhythm
    and loss of consciousness.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    If you suspect that
    you are having serotonin syndrome,
  • 2:51 - 2:55
you should go to the hospital
or be checked out by your provider.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    You should especially be careful
    with serotonin syndrome
  • 2:58 - 3:03
if you are on multiple medications
    that increase levels of Serotonin
  • 3:03 - 3:08
    like other SSRI, SNRI medications,
    Buspirone, Hydroxyzine,
  • 3:09 - 3:12
    other antidepressants,
    antipsychotics.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
There's quite a few, so be careful.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
But again, this is an effective medication
and it's been used for a long time
  • 3:18 - 3:24
    to treat anxiety, depression
and those conditions I mentioned before.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
    Do not be dissuaded
    by the possible side effects.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    These are possible, not guaranteed.
  • 3:30 - 3:34
With Effexor there is also a bit
    of a withdrawal syndrome.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    Antidepressant medications
    like Venlafaxine
  • 3:36 - 3:40
need to be tapered off in order
    to avoid or mitigate withdrawal.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    Symptoms of withdrawal include
  • 3:42 - 3:45
    dizziness, aches, chills and headaches.
  • 3:45 - 3:48
You need to come off of this slowly
if you're coming off of it,
  • 3:48 - 3:52
especially if you've been on it
for a while and if you're at a high dose.
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    So, what are some
    positives of venlafaxine?
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    You have heard, some negatives
    of the side effects
  • 3:57 - 4:03
Again, if your doctor and your medication
it may be way worth it to put up
  • 4:03 - 4:07
with some of these side effects,
which likely you will not experience many,
  • 4:07 - 4:11
you will experience maybe a few
and a lot of them will obey over time.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    Positives or pros of venlafaxine.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
Is a very effective medication for
    anxiety and depression
  • 4:16 - 4:18
and it is been around for several decades.
  • 4:18 - 4:22
    It is very well researched
and can be used to great effect.
  • 4:22 - 4:26
    What are some
    negative or cons of Venlafaxine?
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    Like other antidepressants,
    can cause sexual dysfunction.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
It can also make suicidal ideation
    or depression worse
  • 4:32 - 4:36
and this more likely in young adults
    and children.
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    So, overall,
    what’s our in-venlafaxine use?
  • 4:39 - 4:43
    Venlafaxine is a well- treatment
    for anxiety and depression
  • 4:43 - 4:44
as well as several other conditions,
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    and it’s considered
    a second line treatment.
  • 4:47 - 4:51
So, usually you go to the SSRIS first,
and then you go to SNRIS:
  • 4:51 - 4:56
    Effexor, Pristiq, Cymbalta.
  • 4:56 - 4:59
There are a couple others out there,
depending on what country you live in.
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    Good medication.
  • 5:00 - 5:01
