Ellen DeGeneres at Tulane's 2009 Commencement Speech
-
0:00 - 0:03Thank you, President Cowan,
Mrs. President Cowan, -
0:03 - 0:04(audience laughs)
-
0:04 - 0:05distinguished guests,
-
0:05 - 0:08undistinguished guests,
you know who you are, -
0:08 - 0:08(audience laughs)
-
0:08 - 0:11honored faculty,
and creepy Spanish teacher. -
0:11 - 0:13(audience laughs)
-
0:13 - 0:17And thank you to all the graduating
class of 2009, -
0:17 - 0:20I realize most of you are hung over
and have splitting -
0:20 - 0:22headaches and haven't slept
since Fat Tuesday -
0:22 - 0:24but you can't graduate till I finish,
so listen up! -
0:24 - 0:27(audience cheers and applauses)
-
0:27 - 0:29When I was asked to make
the commencement speech -
0:29 - 0:32I immediately said yes,
-
0:32 - 0:34then I went to look up
what commencement meant, -
0:34 - 0:36(audience laughs)
-
0:36 - 0:38which would have been easy if I had
a dictionary but most of the books -
0:38 - 0:41in our house are Portia's
and they are all written in Australian. -
0:41 - 0:44(audience laughs)
-
0:44 - 0:49So, I had to break the word
down myself, -
0:49 - 0:50to find out the meaning.
-
0:50 - 0:54Commencement.
Common and cement. -
0:54 - 0:55(audience laughs)
-
0:55 - 0:57Common cement.
-
0:57 - 1:01You commonly see cement on sidewalks.
-
1:01 - 1:04Sidewalks have cracks and if you step
on a crack you break your mothers back. -
1:04 - 1:06(audience laughs)
-
1:06 - 1:07So there's that.
-
1:07 - 1:11(audience laughs)
-
1:11 - 1:14But I'm honored that you've asked me here
to speak at your common cement. -
1:14 - 1:16(audience laughs)
-
1:16 - 1:21I thought that you had to be a famous
alumnus, alumini, aluminum, alumus, -
1:21 - 1:23you had to graduate from the school.
-
1:23 - 1:24(audience laughs)
-
1:24 - 1:29I didn't go to college, here,
and I don't know if President Cowan knows, -
1:29 - 1:32I didn't go to college at all,
any college. -
1:32 - 1:35And I'm not saying you wasted your time
or money but look at me, -
1:35 - 1:36I'm a huge celebrity.
-
1:36 - 1:43(audience laughs and applauses)
-
1:48 - 1:51Although I did graduate
from the school of hard knocks, -
1:51 - 1:53our mascot was the knockers.
-
1:53 - 1:55(audience laughs)
-
1:55 - 1:56I spent a lot of time here growing up.
-
1:56 - 1:59My mom worked at Newcom
and I would go there -
1:59 - 2:02every time I needed to steal
something out of her purse. -
2:02 - 2:04But why am I here today?
Clearly not to steal. -
2:04 - 2:07You're too far away
and I'd never get away with it. -
2:07 - 2:09I'm here because of you.
-
2:09 - 2:13Because I can't think of a more tenacious,
more courageous graduating class. -
2:13 - 2:16I mean, look at you all
wearing your robes. -
2:16 - 2:17Usually when you're wearing a robe
-
2:17 - 2:20at ten in the morning,
it means you've given up. -
2:20 - 2:23(audience laughs)
-
2:23 - 2:25I'm here
-
2:25 - 2:27(audience laughs)
-
2:27 - 2:29because I love New Orleans.
-
2:29 - 2:33I was born and raised here,
I spent my formative years here, -
2:33 - 2:36and like you, while I was living here,
I only did laundry six times. -
2:36 - 2:40(audience laughs)
-
2:40 - 2:43When I finished school
I was completely lost. -
2:43 - 2:44And by school, I mean middle school,
-
2:44 - 2:47but I went ahead and finished
high school anyway. -
2:47 - 2:50And I really had no ambition.
-
2:50 - 2:53I didn't know what I wanted to do.
I did everything. -
2:53 - 2:57I shucked oysters, I was a hostess,
I was a bartender, -
2:57 - 3:01I was a waitress, I painted houses,
I sold vacuum cleaners, -
3:01 - 3:06I had no idea and I thought
I'd just finally settle on some job -
3:06 - 3:08and I would make enough money
to pay my rent, -
3:08 - 3:12maybe have basic cable, maybe not,
I didn't really have a plan. -
3:12 - 3:14My point, is that by the time
I was your age, -
3:14 - 3:17I really thought I knew who I was,
but I had no idea. -
3:17 - 3:20Like, for example, when I was your age,
I was dating men. -
3:20 - 3:26(audience laughs and cheers)
-
3:26 - 3:30So what I'm saying is when your older,
most of you will be gay. -
3:30 - 3:34(audience laughs)
-
3:34 - 3:36Is anybody writing this stuff down?
-
3:36 - 3:37Parents?
-
3:37 - 3:39(audience laughs)
-
3:39 - 3:42(Ellen laughs)
-
3:43 - 3:46Anyway, I had no idea
what I wanted to do with my life -
3:46 - 3:51and the way I ended up on this path
was from a very tragic event. -
3:51 - 3:55I was maybe 19
-
3:55 - 3:59and my girlfriend at the time
was killed in a car accident. -
3:59 - 4:00And I passed the accident
-
4:00 - 4:03and I didn't know it was her
and I kept going. -
4:03 - 4:07And I found out shortly after
that it was her. -
4:07 - 4:11And I was living in a basement apartment.
-
4:11 - 4:14I had no money,
I had no heat, no air. -
4:14 - 4:19I had a mattress on the floor
and the apartment was infested with fleas. -
4:19 - 4:23And I was soul-searching.
I was like, "Why is she suddenly gone -
4:23 - 4:25and there are fleas here?
I don't understand. -
4:25 - 4:28There must be a purpose
and wouldn't it be so convenient -
4:28 - 4:32if we could just pick up the phone
and call God, and ask these questions. -
4:32 - 4:35And I started writing
and what poured out of me -
4:35 - 4:39was an imaginary conversation with God,
which was one-sided, -
4:39 - 4:44and I finished writing it
and I looked at it and I said to myself -- -
4:44 - 4:47and I hadn't even been doing stand-up,
ever, there was no club in town -- -
4:47 - 4:50I said I'm going to do this
on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson -- -
4:50 - 4:53at the time, he was the king --
and I'm gonna be the first woman -
4:53 - 4:56in the history of the show
to be called over to sit down. -
4:56 - 4:58And several years later,
-
4:58 - 5:00I was the first woman
in the history of the show, -
5:00 - 5:03and the only woman
in the history of the show to sit down -
5:03 - 5:05because of that phone conversation
with God that I wrote. -
5:05 - 5:10And I started this path of stand-up
-
5:10 - 5:14and it was successful and it was great,
but it was hard -
5:14 - 5:18because I was trying to please everybody,
and I had this secret that I was keeping -
5:18 - 5:22that I was gay, and I thought if people
found out they wouldn't like me, -
5:22 - 5:25they wouldn't laugh at me,
then my career turned into, -
5:25 - 5:30I got my own sitcom and that was
very successful, another level of success -
5:30 - 5:34and I thought, "What if they find out
I'm gay? Then they'll never watch..." -
5:34 - 5:37This was a long time ago,
this was when we just had -
5:37 - 5:39white presidents
but anyway, this was back, -
5:39 - 5:41(audience laughs)
-
5:41 - 5:42many years ago.
-
5:42 - 5:44(audience laughs)
-
5:44 - 5:47And, I finally
-
5:48 - 5:54decided that I was living with so much
shame and so much fear. -
5:54 - 5:57I just couldn't live that way anymore.
I decided to come out, make it creative, -
5:57 - 5:59my character would come out
at the same time. -
5:59 - 6:03It wasn't to make a political statement
or do anything other than to free myself -
6:03 - 6:06up from this heaviness
that I was carrying around. -
6:06 - 6:08I just wanted to be honest
and I thought, -
6:08 - 6:11"What's the worst that can happen?
I can lose my career." -
6:11 - 6:12I did.
-
6:12 - 6:14I lost my career.
-
6:14 - 6:18The show was cancelled after six years
without even telling me. -
6:18 - 6:19I read it in the paper.
-
6:21 - 6:23The phone didn't ring for three years.
-
6:23 - 6:28I had no offers,
nobody wanted to touch me at all. -
6:30 - 6:33Yet, I was getting letters from kids
that almost committed suicide -
6:33 - 6:35but didn't because of what I did,
-
6:35 - 6:38and I realized that I had a purpose
-
6:38 - 6:40and it wasn't just about me
and it wasn't about celebrity -
6:40 - 6:43but I felt like I was being punished.
-
6:43 - 6:45It was a bad time.
I was angry, I was sad. -
6:45 - 6:48And then I was offered a talk show
-
6:48 - 6:51and the people that offered me
the talk show tried to sell it -
6:51 - 6:54and most stations
didn't want to pick it up. -
6:54 - 6:57Most people didn't want to buy it because
they thought nobody would watch me. -
6:59 - 7:02Really, when I look back on it,
I wouldn't change a thing. -
7:02 - 7:05It was so important for me
to lose everything -
7:05 - 7:08because I found out
what the most important thing is, -
7:08 - 7:10is to be true to yourself.
-
7:11 - 7:13Ultimately, that's what's gotten me
to this place. -
7:13 - 7:16I don't live in fear, I'm free,
I have no secrets, -
7:16 - 7:18and I know I'll always be okay
-
7:18 - 7:21because no matter what,
I know who I am. -
7:21 - 7:23So, in conclusion,
-
7:23 - 7:26when I was younger
I thought success was something different. -
7:26 - 7:29I thought, when I grow up,
I want to be famous, -
7:29 - 7:31I want to be a star,
I want to be in movies. -
7:31 - 7:34When I grow up, I want to see
the world, drive nice cars, -
7:34 - 7:36I wanna have groupies,
-
7:36 - 7:37(audience laughs)
-
7:37 - 7:38to quote the Pussy Cat Dolls.
-
7:38 - 7:41How many people thought it was boobies
by the way? -
7:41 - 7:42It's not, it's groupies.
-
7:42 - 7:43(audience laughs)
-
7:43 - 7:46But my idea of success is different today
and as you grow, -
7:46 - 7:48you'll realize the definition
of success changes. -
7:48 - 7:53For many of you, today's success is being
able to hold down 20 shots of tequila. -
7:53 - 7:55(audience laughs and cheers)
-
7:55 - 7:57For me, the most important thing
in your life -
7:57 - 7:59is to live your life with integrity
-
7:59 - 8:03and not to give into peer pressure
to try to be something that you're not. -
8:03 - 8:05To live your life as an honest
and compassionate person, -
8:05 - 8:08to contribute in some way.
-
8:08 - 8:09So to conclude my conclusion,
-
8:09 - 8:11(audience laughs)
-
8:11 - 8:13follow your passion,
stay true to yourself, -
8:13 - 8:15never follow someone else's path
unless your in the woods -
8:15 - 8:17and you're lost and you see a path,
-
8:17 - 8:19then by all means
you should follow that. -
8:19 - 8:21(audience laughs)
-
8:21 - 8:25Don't give advice,
it'll come back and bite you in the ass. -
8:25 - 8:27Don't take anyone's advice.
-
8:27 - 8:29So my advice to you is to
-
8:29 - 8:30(audience laughs)
-
8:30 - 8:32be true to yourself
and everything will be fine. -
8:32 - 8:36I know a lot of you are concerned about
your future but there's no need to worry. -
8:36 - 8:39The economy is booming,
the job market is wide open. -
8:39 - 8:40(audience laughs)
-
8:40 - 8:42The planet is just fine.
-
8:42 - 8:43(audience laughs)
-
8:43 - 8:45It'll be great.
You already survived a hurricane. -
8:45 - 8:47What else can happen to you?
-
8:47 - 8:49Some of the most devastating things
that happen to you -
8:49 - 8:52will teach you the most.
Now you know the right questions -
8:52 - 8:55to ask for your first job interview,
like, "Is it above sea level?" -
8:55 - 8:59(audience laughs)
-
8:59 - 9:01So, to conclude my conclusion
that I previously concluded -
9:01 - 9:04in the common cement speech,
-
9:04 - 9:07I guess what I'm trying to say
is life is like one big Mardi Gras, -
9:07 - 9:10but instead of showing people your boobs
show people your brain, -
9:10 - 9:12and if they like what they see
-
9:12 - 9:14you'll have more beads
than you know what to do with. -
9:14 - 9:17And you'll be drunk most of the time.
-
9:17 - 9:18(audience laughs)
-
9:18 - 9:20So to the Katrina class of 2009,
I say congratulations -
9:20 - 9:23and if you don't remember
a thing I said today, remember this. -
9:23 - 9:25You're gonna be okay
-
9:25 - 9:27dum-do-dum-dum-dum
-
9:27 - 9:28just dance.
-
9:28 - 9:30(audience laughs and cheers)
