Easing Difference by Exploring It

  • 0:05 - 0:08
    Asil Yassine: It's so interesting
    reflecting on my own education
  • 0:08 - 0:11
    because some of
    the most traumatic moments
  • 0:11 - 0:16
    were caused by the fact
that I was an English language learner.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
Um, some of my worst memories
    of schools
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    were because I read
    something aloud wrong,
  • 0:21 - 0:26
or because I didn't feel confident
    in my writing,
  • 0:26 - 0:29
um, or I had struggled with reading, um,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
particularly in a very public audience,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
and so when I see my students
    struggle in class,
  • 0:34 - 0:38
    I think every educator
    has empathy for their students
  • 0:38 - 0:41
because they are just great people, um,
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    but, I often had flashbacks
    in the classroom
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    of watching a student struggle,
    um, with reading,
  • 0:47 - 0:51
and then remembering my own struggles,
and so I think that connection
  • 0:51 - 0:54
has been very important to me,
    and has more than anything
  • 0:54 - 0:58
    motivated me to continue learning
    about how to support them.
