Understanding Exponents

  • 0:01 - 0:06
    Write 6 times 6 times 6 times
    6 times 6 times 6 times 6
  • 0:06 - 0:12
    times 6 in exponential
    notation.
  • 0:12 - 0:13
So what's going on over here?
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    Well, we have 6 multiplied
    by itself how many times?
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    Let's see, that's 6 times 1,
then 6 times 2 is that.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    That's 6 times-- well,
    it's not 6 times 2.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
It's 6 times itself two times.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
    Remember, 6 times itself
    two times would be 36.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    6 times 2 would only be 12.
  • 0:30 - 0:37
So we have one 6, two 6, three
    6, four 6, five 6's, six 6's,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    seven 6's, eight 6's.
  • 0:39 - 0:43
    So we're multiplying 6 by
    itself eight times.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    To write this in exponential
    notation, we would say that
  • 0:46 - 0:55
this is equal to 6 to the
    eighth power, which is
  • 0:55 - 0:59
literally equal to 6 times 6
    times 6 times 6 times 6 times
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    6 times 6 times 6.
  • 1:00 - 1:05
Now, I want to make it very
clear this is NOT, this is
  • 1:05 - 1:10
    NOT, this is NOT equal
    to 6 times 8.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    6 times 8 will only be 48.
  • 1:16 - 1:20
6 to the eighth power is
    a super huge number.
  • 1:20 - 1:24
    6 times 6 is 36, and you're
    going to multiply that times
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    6, which is what?
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    That's like 36 times--
    that's what?
  • 1:27 - 1:31
    216, and you keep multiplying
it by 6, you get some huge
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    number here.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    This number right here.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    It's worthwhile to point out
    this number is huge.
  • 1:40 - 1:44
    This number right here,
    not so huge.
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    It is not huge.
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    So don't get confused.
  • 1:46 - 1:50
If you see 6 to the eighth
    power, it's 6 times itself
  • 1:50 - 1:54
eight times, not 6 times 8.
