The Makings of a Reel

  • 0:01 - 0:02
    ALISHA WILKINS: Okay!
  • 0:02 - 0:05
    So welcome to today's
    sort of social media training.
  • 0:05 - 0:08
    This actually came about
    because of a staff assistant.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    She wanted to join in
    on a brainstorming session
  • 0:10 - 0:13
of how I do this kind of stuff,
    and I said, "Okay!"
  • 0:13 - 0:17
So I thought, let's just have
    everybody come in and see
  • 0:17 - 0:20
kind of how I go about finding sounds,
    making Reels.
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    I have two topics today
that I kind of have on my mind.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
And there's two ways that I approach this.
  • 0:27 - 0:28
So I either approach it with,
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    I have this subject
that I need to make a Reel on.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    So today it's either,
  • 0:32 - 0:36
"How to Ditch the Holiday Debt,"
or today's actually National Milk Day.
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    Or, I just scroll,
  • 0:38 - 0:41
and I find a trending sound
    that could work for us.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    So those are kind of
the two mindsets that I'm in.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
I don't have anything planned here,
  • 0:47 - 0:50
so this is going to be
as raw as it possibly could be.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    Just showing the process.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    I really hope
that my algorithm keeps my Reels
  • 0:56 - 0:58
that come up on my screen appropriate, ha!
  • 0:59 - 1:03
But, yeah, I'm just going to go ahead
    and share my phone screen,
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    so you guys can see...
  • 1:08 - 1:11
And it might seem a little boring
for you to sit here and watch me scroll,
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    but when I--when people say,
"How do I--how do you get ideas?"
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    And I'm like, "I scroll."
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    That's literally it.
    So, if everybody--
  • 1:18 - 1:19
You can see my phone, right?
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    You see, "Early Bird Discount?"
    'Kay.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
So what I'm going to do is
I'm going to go to Reels,
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    and I'm going to listen...
  • 1:27 - 1:28
Can you guys hear my phone?
  • 1:29 - 1:31
No? 'Kay. I'm gonna stop that.
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    Let's...
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    Try it one more time.
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    I didn't check a box.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    Share sound...
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    There we go.
  • 1:46 - 1:47
    There we go.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    Now, can you hear it?
    [Seems Like Forever by Cecily]
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    Perfect.
[Worst Comes to Worst by Dilated Peoples]
  • 1:53 - 1:55
So, like I said, I'm just--
  • 1:55 - 1:56
I have those two topics in mind.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
I have Milk Day or Ditch Holiday Debt,
and I'm just going to scroll.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
And it might be kind of boring,
but this kind of how I go about it.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
So you see on the bottom-left,
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    there's that arrow
    that says it's trending.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
So I kind of look at that
    sometimes too, like,
  • 2:08 - 2:11
"Okay, is this a trending sound
    I could use?"
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    [Worst Comes to Worst
    by Dilated Peoples resumes]
  • 2:13 - 2:17
    [Bright, upbeat music]
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    [music restarts]
  • 2:18 - 2:21
[No One's Ready by Austin Millz]
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    [Roslyn by Bon Iver]
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    Here's one of my favorite
    Reel influencers.
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    If you're looking for it.
  • 2:30 - 2:31
[I'll Be Around by Austin Millz]
  • 2:32 - 2:33
ONSCREEN: I have to tell you a secret.
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    ALISHA: Okay.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
So this one would be fun to do
    "How to Ditch Holiday Debt."
  • 2:37 - 2:38
ONSCREEN: I have to tell you a secret.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
ALISHA: So I would just click
    on the bottom-right...
  • 2:42 - 2:43
And it shows us all the audio.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    This one's kind of a--
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    ONSCREEN: 'Kay, bye!
  • 2:46 - 2:48
ALISHA: It's been used a lot.
    So if I don't know,
  • 2:48 - 2:50
I would just save it at the top-right.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    Just bookmark it
and s-- come back to it if I can.
  • 2:53 - 2:58
[simple piano version of "Heart and Soul"
by Frank Loesser and Hoagy Carmichael]
  • 2:58 - 2:58
    [drums]
  • 2:58 - 3:01
[Worst Comes to Worst by Dilated Peoples]
  • 3:01 - 3:03
This is now the second time
    I've heard this sound,
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    So I'm like,
    "Okay. Well maybe,
  • 3:04 - 3:06
we need to look at it," but it--
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    [inaudible]
    [Planetarium from La La Land]
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    [Planetarium from La La Land]
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    >> --you're ever sad,
    just go snowboarding.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    You'll quickly realize
    that your physical health
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    is in much worse con-
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    [Riptide (ambient cover)
    by Pop Goes Ambient]
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    [simple piano music]
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    >> I wanna post a Reel today,
but I don't have much time.
  • 3:23 - 3:24
So, here's what I'm working on.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
ALISHA: Okay. This would be fun
    if you're like,
  • 3:27 - 3:28
an agent out in the field.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    Or if you're cooking something
    for a project.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    Or researching something...
    [inaudible] ... I think.
  • 3:34 - 3:38
[As It Was by Harry Styles,
    covered by PREP]
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    ONSCREEN: I'm okay!
  • 3:43 - 3:43
    No I'm not.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    ALISHA: That would be good
    for holiday debt.
  • 3:47 - 3:49
So I'm just going to do that one.
  • 3:50 - 3:52
Um, so then I'd hit the camera icon.
  • 3:52 - 3:55
This might be kind of delayed,
    because we got a weird--
  • 3:56 - 3:58
So, at this point I would film it.
  • 3:58 - 4:01
So, I don't know how it's going to work
    with me sharing my screen,
  • 4:01 - 4:02
but we're going to try it out.
  • 4:03 - 4:03
    So.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
I'm gonna actually get some props.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
Wait, I don't even have any invoices
    or bills up here.
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    I have no paper.
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    This is where the beauty
of working from home is, is I can--
  • 4:23 - 4:26
And usually, I would try to film this
    with like a plain background,
  • 4:26 - 4:28
so not the stuff behind me.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
    But today, since I'm connected
with my phone, I can't move.
  • 4:33 - 4:35
So then I would film it—let's see.
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    I would click the timer
    so I don't have to...
  • 4:40 - 4:41
    Alright.
  • 4:42 - 4:43
    Here we go...
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    Let's try this.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    You guys are gonna see
    how funny I look.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    I don't know
if the sound's gonna go or not, but.
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    ALISHA: It didn't work.
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    Use audio.
  • 4:53 - 4:54
    There it goes.
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    >> I'm okay!
  • 5:00 - 5:01
    No I'm not.
  • 5:01 - 5:02
    ALISHA: 'Kay.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    [countdown jingle]
  • 5:11 - 5:12
    >> I'm okay!
  • 5:15 - 5:16
    No I'm not.
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    ALISHA: Ugh!
    See, I messed up. But!
  • 5:18 - 5:19
    [chuckles]
    >> I'm okay!
  • 5:20 - 5:21
    ALISHA: Oh, Woo!
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    That was...really embarrassing
to have you guys all watch
  • 5:24 - 5:27
I would probably do that like,
    seven times.
  • 5:27 - 5:28
    'Kay?
  • 5:28 - 5:30
    I'm gonna just, uh...
  • 5:31 - 5:32
    turn it off.
  • 5:32 - 5:33
    The sound.
  • 5:33 - 5:35
So once you get your lip-syncing there,
  • 5:35 - 5:39
    if you're doing a lip-sync,
then I would just add like, the caption.
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    So it'd be like,
  • 5:41 - 5:46
    [slowly]
"When your credit cards come due."
  • 5:47 - 5:48
    Oh my goodness.
  • 5:52 - 5:57
    "...your holiday spending
    credit cards come due."
  • 5:57 - 5:59
And then I put my tip in the caption.
  • 5:59 - 6:05
So I'm gonna just save that one as a draft
and keep going and see if I can find--
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    [American Beauty by Thomas Newman]
  • 6:07 - 6:08
    >> [laughing]
    This is wha--
  • 6:08 - 6:10
    [Uptempo dance music]
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    >> Uhh, can this be a thing?
    ALISHA: Trying to find
  • 6:15 - 6:16
things you don't have to listen to.
  • 6:16 - 6:19
    >> [crickets chirping]
  • 6:19 - 6:22
ALISHA: Heh. That's a funny one.
I haven't seen that one for a while.
  • 6:23 - 6:26
    Just crickets, and you sitting.
You wouldn't have to lip-sync it.
  • 6:27 - 6:28
    >> That's a great question!
  • 6:28 - 6:30
    I've been wondering that myself.
  • 6:30 - 6:32
    [slow piano]
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    >> Probably when you're not looking,
    you'll find someone!
  • 6:34 - 6:37
    Who reads the same books
or listens to the same music
  • 6:37 - 6:38
    or likes to--
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    [herewego by jinsang]
  • 6:40 - 6:41
    >> I feel like that's actually--
  • 6:42 - 6:44
    [applause and cheering]
  • 6:44 - 6:50
This would be one that you
    don't want to...uh...lip-sync to.
  • 6:50 - 6:55
    Maybe if I wasn't gonna...[inaudible]
...pour out like, a glass of milk...
  • 6:55 - 7:00
as if we're applauding milk for all the...
    [inaudible]...National Milk Day.
  • 7:01 - 7:03
    [ringing ping, hip-hop beat]
  • 7:03 - 7:05
    [flowing piano]
  • 7:05 - 7:08
This is a super popular, like,
    aesthetic sound.
  • 7:09 - 7:12
That if you wanted, you can use template,
  • 7:12 - 7:16
and just add in media from your own.
  • 7:16 - 7:16
    So like...
  • 7:19 - 7:22
    I could go to videos,
and let's say I was like,
  • 7:22 - 7:23
    "I'm gonna..."
  • 7:23 - 7:26
We'll just add some cute pictures
of my baby for a second...
  • 7:31 - 7:32
Then it makes it for you.
  • 7:33 - 7:35
So you can see it's loading.
    [flowing piano]
  • 7:35 - 7:37
    [flowing piano]
  • 7:37 - 7:40
So if you had a variety of clips
    from an event
  • 7:40 - 7:43
    or like a feel,
    or like--if you we're like--
  • 7:43 - 7:44
    [music stops]
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    Um...
  • 7:45 - 7:46
If you had stuff from a garden,
  • 7:46 - 7:50
like B-roll, kind of, you know.
Or of a sunset, you could do that.
  • 7:50 - 7:52
You can also put images in here.
  • 7:52 - 7:55
So, I'll just go to my images.
  • 7:56 - 7:58
And we'll just put this one
    of my cutie baby in.
  • 7:58 - 8:01
    [piano continues]
    So then--Oh, that's a video.
  • 8:01 - 8:03
    [piano continues]
  • 8:03 - 8:05
    [piano stops]
    We want a picture.
  • 8:05 - 8:06
    But these are all--
  • 8:06 - 8:08
There we go. We'll do that one.
  • 8:08 - 8:11
    [Piano resumes] So then it
just has the picture for that long.
  • 8:11 - 8:12
So if you didn't have a bunch of B-roll...
  • 8:15 - 8:16
    Okay!
  • 8:18 - 8:22
So then what I would do at that point,
once I've kind of found my sound,
  • 8:22 - 8:24
I would come over to drafts...
  • 8:25 - 8:27
and I would just edit the Reel.
  • 8:27 - 8:28
    I'd edit the cover.
  • 8:28 - 8:30
There's two ways you can do covers.
  • 8:30 - 8:33
    You can--err, I guess
there's multiple ways you can do covers.
  • 8:33 - 8:36
You can either use a still-shot
  • 8:36 - 8:39
    from the actual video
by dragging it here on the bottom.
  • 8:40 - 8:41
You can add from the camera roll.
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    So it would be like,
  • 8:43 - 8:45
    let's add this cute picture
    of myself as the cover.
  • 8:45 - 8:48
And then over here, it'll show
what would look like on your grid,
  • 8:48 - 8:51
    if you have, like,
a way you want it cropped.
  • 8:51 - 8:54
    Another way that I found
    that I really like
  • 8:54 - 8:57
    is actually to go back
and act like you're gonna make a Story.
  • 8:58 - 9:01
And take a selfie or, like,
    use your prop or whatever.
  • 9:01 - 9:02
    So it's like,
  • 9:02 - 9:04
    Meh, I can't do this one-handed.
  • 9:06 - 9:08
    Boop! And then just like,
  • 9:10 - 9:12
So that would be my cover photo.
  • 9:12 - 9:14
    And then say like,
  • 9:15 - 9:18
    "How to ditch holiday debt."
  • 9:18 - 9:21
And then save that to my camera roll.
  • 9:22 - 9:25
So when I go back in
    and I'm editing the cover...
  • 9:32 - 9:33
    ONSCREEN: --kay!
  • 9:35 - 9:38
ALISHA: I have basically the same thing,
    but I ha--
  • 9:38 - 9:41
I can control my facial expressions
    a little bit better, [chuckles]
  • 9:41 - 9:43
than when I'm, like, doing it live.
  • 9:43 - 9:45
So then I could go and change
  • 9:45 - 9:47
to what it would look like
    on my profile grid.
  • 9:47 - 9:48
    So!
  • 9:48 - 9:50
I know that was a little bit crazy.
  • 9:51 - 9:54
But that's kind of where I start
    when I'm looking for Reels,
  • 9:54 - 9:58
is it honestly starts with scrolling
with kind of an idea in mind.
  • 9:59 - 10:01
    Or by noticing a trend.
  • 10:02 - 10:06
    A huge trend
that is up-and-coming is gonna be...
  • 10:09 - 10:11
    There's--I've noticed Reel--
    I should say this:
  • 10:11 - 10:14
I've noticed Reel trends start on TikTok.
  • 10:14 - 10:16
So if they're popular on TikTok,
  • 10:16 - 10:19
    then about a week-and-a-half later,
    they're popular on Instagram.
  • 10:20 - 10:22
So let me see if I can find an example.
  • 10:24 - 10:26
And I kind of said this before,
  • 10:26 - 10:28
but the best way to know
    is by scrolling.
  • 10:28 - 10:30
    By setting aside time
    to scroll and not--
  • 10:31 - 10:33
    not just jumping on,
    "I'm gonna make a Reel,"
  • 10:33 - 10:34
    and then getting off.
  • 10:34 - 10:38
So, spending time in the app,
    learning things.
  • 10:38 - 10:39
    [flowing piano]
  • 10:39 - 10:41
So, let me see if I can find one.
  • 10:41 - 10:42
[Jump in the Line by Lord Kitchener,
    covered by Harry Belafonte]
  • 10:42 - 10:44
    >> This day--
    ALISHA: He's also really good.
  • 10:44 - 10:46
    If you're looking for somebody
    to follow for ideas.
  • 10:47 - 10:48
    [calypso picks up]
  • 10:48 - 10:51
ONSCREEN: This day is bananas. B-A--
  • 10:51 - 10:52
    [Every Second by Mina Okabe]
  • 10:53 - 10:54
    OFFSCREEN: Do you feel awesome?
    CHILD'S VOICE: Yeah!
  • 10:55 - 10:57
    >> You're going to want one of these.
ALISHA: This is a good one.
  • 10:57 - 10:57
SPEAKER 2: What does it help with?
  • 10:58 - 10:59
    SPEAKER 1: Everything.
  • 11:00 - 11:01
    [Palace by ADTurnUp]
  • 11:01 - 11:03
[My Tears are Becoming a Sea by M83]
  • 11:03 - 11:05
    ONSCREEN: My life is good.
    [ALISHA chuckles]
  • 11:06 - 11:07
    Really good.
  • 11:07 - 11:09
    ALISHA: That would be
a really funny one for like,
  • 11:10 - 11:12
    "I'm becoming a master gardener",
  • 11:12 - 11:14
    or, "I joined 4-H,"
  • 11:14 - 11:17
Or, "I learned how to can chicken."
  • 11:17 - 11:19
Y'know, [imitating Reel] My life is good.
    Really good.
  • 11:19 - 11:21
This's one of my favorite movies.
  • 11:21 - 11:22
    ONSCREEN: --I understand, but I'm not s--
  • 11:23 - 11:24
    ALISHA: Let's see.
  • 11:24 - 11:27
    [Jazzy barotone sax]
  • 11:28 - 11:29
This is an easy one, too.
  • 11:30 - 11:31
    And then you, blink, blink!
  • 11:31 - 11:33
    When somebody says something dumb,
  • 11:33 - 11:34
    Like...
  • 11:35 - 11:36
    I never...
  • 11:36 - 11:38
I never acid test my tomatoes!
  • 11:38 - 11:39
    Or, I...
  • 11:41 - 11:42
    Someone thinks that I...
  • 11:43 - 11:45
    spend time outside--
    I dunno, something health-wise.
  • 11:45 - 11:46
    [Dream by The Pied Pipers]
  • 11:47 - 11:48
    [Riptide (ambient cover)
    by Pop Goes Ambient]
  • 11:48 - 11:51
    ONSCREEN: This is a dream
  • 11:51 - 11:53
that I have had since lunch
and I am not giving up--
  • 11:53 - 11:56
    ALISHA: Office quotes
tend to be really trendy right now.
  • 11:56 - 11:57
    I'm a huge Office nerd.
  • 11:57 - 12:00
    I've probably watched it
    ten times at least.
  • 12:00 - 12:02
    It's probably--anyway.
  • 12:02 - 12:02
[We Will Rock You by Queen]
  • 12:02 - 12:06
[You Can Fly from Peter Pan,
    covered by A Covering]
  • 12:06 - 12:08
    Cute little music one.
  • 12:08 - 12:11
    ONSCREEN: [overlapping] Don't do it.
Don't do it. Do not do it.
  • 12:11 - 12:13
    ALISHA: This... [inaudible]...about
  • 12:15 - 12:16
    [inaudible] ...really...
  • 12:16 - 12:18
    ONSCREEN: I don't know if y'all know
    but we gon' win.
  • 12:18 - 12:20
    [Dreamy music]
  • 12:20 - 12:23
[Of My Dreams by Sean Angus Watson]
  • 12:24 - 12:27
This is--This is an easy video format
    that's popular.
  • 12:27 - 12:30
    Is just like a little--
You can make this in Canva.
  • 12:30 - 12:33
    Just a little text box
over a video as it like, plays.
  • 12:33 - 12:34
So maybe it's a tour of your office.
  • 12:34 - 12:37
    Maybe it's a pretty B-roll of, um...
  • 12:39 - 12:42
    Like a garden
or a scenic area in your county.
  • 12:42 - 12:42
    That kind of thing.
  • 12:43 - 12:44
    Here's an ad for me.
  • 12:44 - 12:46
    ONSCREEN: [shushing]
  • 12:46 - 12:49
    [whispering]
Stop trying to tell me what to do.
  • 12:49 - 12:51
    ALISHA: [inaudible]
    >> I don't listen.
  • 12:51 - 12:52
    ALISHA: That's a good one.
  • 12:52 - 12:53
[simple piano version of "Heart and Soul"
by Frank Loesser and Hoagy Carmichael]
  • 12:53 - 12:54
    This is a TikTok sound.
  • 12:56 - 12:57
    I don't dance really well.
  • 12:57 - 13:01
    Also, I don't feel like
my house has great lighting [inaudible]
  • 13:01 - 13:04
    [Anymore by Pawns or Kings]
  • 13:04 - 13:05
    Uh...
  • 13:05 - 13:06
    [Escapism by RAYE]
  • 13:07 - 13:08
    ONSCREEN: It's really beyond words.
  • 13:08 - 13:09
    ALISHA: Yeah! It's Michael.
    He is everywhere.
  • 13:09 - 13:10
    >> So what do you do around here?
  • 13:10 - 13:12
    >> Like, what would you say that your j--
  • 13:12 - 13:13
    [huephoria by Septober]
    ALISHA: Anyway!
  • 13:13 - 13:14
    So that's kind of--
  • 13:14 - 13:16
Really, it's about scrolling and learning
  • 13:16 - 13:19
    and then being okay
    about looking a little ridiculous
  • 13:19 - 13:20
like I did for you guys.
  • 13:21 - 13:23
    It probably--
    So I made this.
  • 13:24 - 13:29
Just to give you context, I made this Reel
for my own personal business last night,
  • 13:29 - 13:32
    and it took me
probably six takes to get this right.
  • 13:34 - 13:37
ONSCREEN ALISHA: I promised other people
that I'd be on my worst behavior.
  • 13:37 - 13:40
ZOOM CALL ALISHA: So I had to
lip-sync, I had to change stuff, anyway.
  • 13:40 - 13:41
    Six times.
  • 13:41 - 13:43
But as you do it more,
    you get better at it.
  • 13:44 - 13:46
So I'm going to stop my screen...
  • 13:47 - 13:48
    right here.
  • 13:49 - 13:49
    Um...
  • 13:50 - 13:52
    Yeah.
    Was that helpful?
  • 13:52 - 13:55
    I don't know,
to kind of see where I go...?
  • 13:56 - 13:59
I-It's about learning what works for you.
  • 13:59 - 14:03
It's about getting in and exploring
and figuring out what your audience needs.
  • 14:04 - 14:06
    Spending time on social media,
    looking at your followers.
  • 14:06 - 14:08
    What are they posting about?
  • 14:08 - 14:12
    Looking at your messages,
    seeing what are they about,
  • 14:12 - 14:14
    and then using that
    to fit to your content.
  • 14:15 - 14:19
2023 is going to be about vulnerability
    and authenticity in social media.
  • 14:20 - 14:23
The Instagram content report also says
  • 14:23 - 14:28
that people are gonna be looking
    for brands that embrace sustainability.
  • 14:28 - 14:30
    So showing how your brand...
  • 14:31 - 14:32
    um...
  • 14:33 - 14:35
can promote those kind of things.
  • 14:35 - 14:37
    That people are very concerned
    about the environment.
  • 14:37 - 14:42
    They're concerned about upcycling clothes,
    especially the younger generation.
  • 14:42 - 14:45
Like the Gen Z kind of population.
  • 14:46 - 14:48
Another thing to think about is...
  • 14:49 - 14:52
—and I kind of explained this to somebody
    that Reels are like the--
  • 14:53 - 14:55
the spine or the back of a book.
  • 14:55 - 14:58
So if you're in a book store,
and you have all these books to look at.
  • 14:58 - 15:01
    Reels are kind of like,
    what captures people's attention
  • 15:03 - 15:04
    and bring them in.
  • 15:04 - 15:07
But then if they open your book,
or if they open to your profile,
  • 15:07 - 15:09
    and they don't immediately
    know what you're about,
  • 15:09 - 15:12
or have no desire to follow you,
they're going to put your book back.
  • 15:12 - 15:15
So like, that was a really great start.
  • 15:15 - 15:17
And the back of the book
    or your Reel was awesome,
  • 15:17 - 15:18
    but they're not following through.
  • 15:18 - 15:21
    So Reels aren't necessarily...
  • 15:21 - 15:22
    uh...
  • 15:22 - 15:25
successful unless your other grid stuff
  • 15:25 - 15:28
    immediately promotes
what you're wanting them to get out of it.
  • 15:28 - 15:31
    So, um, I'm glad Kylee.
    [chuckles]
  • 15:32 - 15:35
It is super hard to know
    where to start with Reels.
  • 15:35 - 15:36
Like, what do I even do?
  • 15:36 - 15:39
There are reels you can do
    that are just about tips
  • 15:39 - 15:42
    and just put like,
a little background music behind it.
  • 15:42 - 15:44
    And those are also really,
    really good to do.
  • 15:45 - 15:48
    If you have like,
a specific thing you wanna share
  • 15:48 - 15:50
and you can't find a sound or a,
  • 15:51 - 15:52
    something to...
  • 15:53 - 15:54
    match with it.
  • 15:54 - 15:57
So, for instance, if I was doing...
  • 15:57 - 15:58
    uh...
  • 15:59 - 16:01
    the Ditch Holiday Debt Reel
  • 16:02 - 16:02
    as just like,
  • 16:04 - 16:07
a little video, I would just film it
    all on my phone
  • 16:07 - 16:10
    and then just kind of,
make sure I add the captions.
  • 16:11 - 16:14
See if I can find an example.
This might be better with an example.
  • 16:15 - 16:18
I haven't done one of these
    for Extension for a while.
  • 16:18 - 16:20
I'm just thinking off the top of my head,
    one that I've done.
  • 16:22 - 16:26
    Or another for, again,
a different brand that I help with.
  • 16:27 - 16:29
Let me see if I can find one actually.
  • 16:31 - 16:33
So this is one that Sheridan did.
  • 16:33 - 16:36
    I took a bigger clip
and I turned it into this.
  • 16:36 - 16:39
So you could do something like this
and just pair it with some audio.
  • 16:40 - 16:42
ONSCREEN: --ng, is a plastic dome.
  • 16:42 - 16:46
This should just go right down over
    whatever system you're using.
  • 16:46 - 16:48
And this will help to keep moisture...
    ALISHA: Just a little tip,
  • 16:48 - 16:50
    from somebody that...
    [inaudible]...on your phone.
  • 16:52 - 16:54
    Or you could do something...
  • 16:56 - 16:57
    Let's see.
  • 16:58 - 16:59
    Like this is one.
  • 17:00 - 17:02
    ONSCREEN: Are you planning
    to can food this summer
  • 17:02 - 17:04
but not sure if you should use
    a water bath canner
  • 17:04 - 17:06
    or a pressure canner?
ALISHA: Just a quick, she filmed it,
  • 17:06 - 17:09
and then I just put a little vlog sound
    on the--on the bottom
  • 17:09 - 17:12
    to make it
a little bit more entertaining, so.
  • 17:13 - 17:14
    Anyway.
  • 17:15 - 17:17
    Stop that share...
  • 17:17 - 17:19
    >> My name's Jenna. I work for USU Ext--
  • 17:19 - 17:20
    ALISHA: 'Kay!
  • 17:20 - 17:22
Well, are there any questions about that?
  • 17:22 - 17:24
    Anything that you guys
    are struggling with?
  • 17:24 - 17:26
I wanted this to be more of just...
  • 17:29 - 17:31
come with me while I make a Reel.
    [chuckles]
  • 17:31 - 17:33
Without having to lip-sync ten times
    in front of everybody,
  • 17:33 - 17:35
'cause my husband makes fun of me enough,
  • 17:35 - 17:38
    I don't need everybody else
to make fun of me, [chuckling] so.
  • 17:46 - 17:47
    'Kay.
  • 17:47 - 17:49
    Well, um,
  • 17:49 - 17:50
    I will record this.
  • 17:51 - 17:52
    [chuckling]
  • 17:52 - 17:55
I watch Reels at work to get ideas.
  • 17:56 - 18:01
Jayc--I watch it on USU Extensions profile
    to get ideas for that.
  • 18:01 - 18:03
Or if I need to switch--
  • 18:03 - 18:06
    Like sometimes, other profiles,
    I'll get different videos just--
  • 18:06 - 18:08
And then if I like the sound,
    I send a message
  • 18:09 - 18:10
to Extension, so I can make it.
  • 18:10 - 18:12
    Just make sure
that you're not on your phone
  • 18:12 - 18:13
    when people come in.
  • 18:13 - 18:14
    Clearly, if you're like,
  • 18:15 - 18:17
front office staff, like, it needs to be
  • 18:18 - 18:19
    when you're not--
  • 18:19 - 18:20
And then if somebody does come in,
    or you answer the phone,
  • 18:20 - 18:22
    obviously put your phone down.
  • 18:22 - 18:23
    But!
    [chuckling]
  • 18:23 - 18:24
    It helps, so.
  • 18:25 - 18:29
Anyway, I hope you guys have a great day,
and I will send out this recording later.
  • 18:29 - 18:30
    So, thanks!
