Choiceless Awareness - The Secret of Secrets- The Wisdom That Leads to Samadhi
-
0:09 - 0:11What we are going to describe
-
0:11 - 0:13has been called ‘The Secret Of Secrets’,
-
0:13 - 0:17the esoteric wisdom that leads to samadhi.
-
0:18 - 0:21Samadhi is the goal of all spirituality,
-
0:21 - 0:24its union with the source.
-
0:25 - 0:28the truth of who or what you are.
-
0:28 - 0:31The truth that transcends the limited mind,
-
0:31 - 0:34cannot be seen by means of the limited mind.
-
0:34 - 0:37The still point cannot be reached
-
0:37 - 0:40by means of movement. If you want to
-
0:40 - 0:43realize the still point beyond thinking,
-
0:43 - 0:47let go of all interest in thoughts and sensations,
-
0:48 - 0:51all preferences, all phenomena
-
0:51 - 0:54generated by the mind and senses,
-
0:54 - 0:58and rest in naked awareness.
-
1:21 - 1:23There are two fundamental dimensions
-
1:23 - 1:26to existence in this moment.
-
1:26 - 1:30There's that which is changing
-
1:30 - 1:32and that which is unchanging.
-
1:32 - 1:35Thoughts and sensations are a field
-
1:35 - 1:37of constantly changing phenomena.
-
1:40 - 1:43What is unchanging is the awareness
-
1:43 - 1:45of that field of change.
-
1:49 - 1:51We are usually so caught up in the field
-
1:51 - 1:55of change, fixated on its objects, that we
-
1:55 - 1:58ignored the dimension of awareness.
-
1:58 - 2:01So we start our investigation by
-
2:01 - 2:04becoming aware of awareness,
-
2:04 - 2:08being conscious of Consciousness.
-
2:44 - 2:46The challenge with resting in awareness
-
2:46 - 2:49for long periods of time, is that
-
2:49 - 2:51most people have not cultivated
-
2:51 - 2:54the concentration and equanimity
-
2:54 - 2:56to stay in awareness.
-
2:56 - 2:59We are addicted to comfort
-
2:59 - 3:00and the limited mind will want
-
3:00 - 3:03to escape from this exercise,
-
3:03 - 3:05it will find it profoundly uncomfortable
-
3:05 - 3:08and will create every type of
-
3:08 - 3:11hindrance or distraction.
-
3:12 - 3:15There are two primary knots that
-
3:15 - 3:18bind us to ego identification.
-
3:18 - 3:21The body is attached to comfort
-
3:21 - 3:25and the mind wants to know.
-
3:26 - 3:29If we continue to seek the comfort
-
3:29 - 3:31of the body and continue to seek
-
3:31 - 3:33knowing with the mind,
-
3:33 - 3:35we will never move beyond the
-
3:35 - 3:38limited mind and body.
-
3:38 - 3:41We will remain like a herd animal,
-
3:41 - 3:44a creature that craves pleasure
-
3:44 - 3:46and avoids pain, endlessly responding
-
3:46 - 3:50to stimulus, endlessly doing,
-
3:51 - 3:55and unaware of the dimension of being.
-
3:57 - 4:01To be aware, to be fully attentive to
-
4:01 - 4:03what is happening, without the mediation
-
4:03 - 4:07of egoic conditioning, without concepts,
-
4:07 - 4:10without controlling, manipulating
-
4:10 - 4:14or distortion, without the filtering
-
4:14 - 4:15of the limited mind,
-
4:15 - 4:18is to be present without choosing.
-
4:19 - 4:22Present without choosing, and therefore
-
4:22 - 4:25without a chooser.
-
4:26 - 4:29Every time the mind moves without your
-
4:29 - 4:33willing, even the tiniest movement,
-
4:33 - 4:36it is due to filtering through the
-
4:36 - 4:39conditioning of the self-structure.
-
4:42 - 4:45The path leads to cessation of
-
4:45 - 4:47the entire whirlpool of mind.
-
4:52 - 4:56To realizing all levels of self as empty.
-
5:01 - 5:03How do I drop all doing,
-
5:03 - 5:06how do I drop mind activity?
-
5:07 - 5:11Listen closely, this is the paradox.
-
5:11 - 5:15The limited egoic mind hears that
-
5:15 - 5:18question and wants to know how,
-
5:18 - 5:23but that limited mind can't do it.
-
5:24 - 5:27The mind will always fail in any attempt
-
5:27 - 5:32to realize stillness, because
the mind is movement. -
5:33 - 5:38The mind itself is movement,
-
5:39 - 5:42it is an endless process of doing.
-
5:42 - 5:45We have to make the shift from doing
-
5:45 - 5:47to BEING.
-
5:47 - 5:50The you that you think you are is a
-
5:50 - 5:54process a constant movement,
-
5:54 - 5:57a collection of patterns.
-
6:02 - 6:06That YOU has to die.
-
6:06 - 6:08The pathological pattern of you
-
6:08 - 6:12has to end for Samadhi to be realized.
-
6:12 - 6:16Let that sink in...
-
6:16 - 6:18Spiritual teachers have given
-
6:18 - 6:21the instruction to reach Samadhi.
-
6:21 - 6:24Be still and know.
-
6:24 - 6:27Be still and know the True Self.
-
6:27 - 6:30Primordial Awareness beyond name and form.
-
6:31 - 6:36Be still and know that you are God.
-
6:38 - 6:41What exactly do they mean?
-
6:42 - 6:46What is it that becomes still?
-
6:47 - 6:50Obviously no one's physical body can
-
6:50 - 6:52become absolutely still,
-
6:52 - 6:55existing within time and space.
-
6:55 - 6:59Because time-space itself is movement.
-
7:00 - 7:03Time-space is mind,
-
7:03 - 7:08the Universe is big mind or Logos.
-
7:10 - 7:14The first Hermetic principle is that
-
7:14 - 7:18The All is mind, the Universe is mental.
-
7:19 - 7:22If the Universe is mind and mind
-
7:22 - 7:26is movement, how can I be still and know?
-
7:26 - 7:30How can you be still on a globe spinning
-
7:30 - 7:34a thousand miles per hour around its axis,
-
7:35 - 7:40spinning 67 000 miles per hour
around the Sun, -
7:41 - 7:46moving 500 000 miles per hour
around the Galaxy, -
7:47 - 7:51and millions more through the Universe?
-
7:52 - 7:56Your heart is beating,
cells are moving inside, -
7:57 - 8:01food digesting, the brain
producing brain waves. -
8:02 - 8:06Your blood is pumping, energy is moving,
-
8:06 - 8:09how can we be still?
-
8:09 - 8:12When the spiritual Masters say
'be still and know', -
8:13 - 8:16they must be talking about something else,
-
8:16 - 8:19something Beyond time and space,
-
8:19 - 8:23something beyond the physical and mental.
-
8:23 - 8:26What is meant by stillness is something
-
8:26 - 8:30that we have no word for in our
modern language system. -
8:30 - 8:34The Sanskrit language, the language
-
8:34 - 8:37of the yogis, has more precise terms
-
8:37 - 8:40which point to the non-dual.
-
8:41 - 8:45The term 'shunyata' is often translated
-
8:45 - 8:49as ‘voidness’, stillness or emptiness.
-
8:49 - 8:52It is what is used in connection
-
8:52 - 8:55with 'anata' or no-self,
-
8:55 - 8:58the realization of Buddha nature.
-
9:02 - 9:05Stillness is maybe the closest
English word, -
9:05 - 9:07but it is inadequate to describe something
-
9:07 - 9:10that is not of this dualistic world.
-
9:12 - 9:16What is actually realized is the
Primordial Consciousness, -
9:16 - 9:19which is beyond stillness and movement,
-
9:19 - 9:22beyond time. It is eternal,
-
9:22 - 9:25the ground of your being,
-
9:25 - 9:27the essential nature of reality
-
9:27 - 9:31that does not change.
Actually it is beyond -
9:31 - 9:34change and the changeless.
-
9:34 - 9:37When our true nature is realized
-
9:37 - 9:40it becomes obvious that stillness
and movement -
9:40 - 9:43are a duality created by the Mind,
-
9:43 - 9:49silence and noise are a duality
created by the mind. -
9:51 - 9:54Everything is already inherent within
-
9:54 - 9:56that primordial stillness, the movement
-
9:56 - 10:01of the world is identical to stillness.
-
10:02 - 10:04Be still and know,
-
10:04 - 10:07be in motion and know.
-
10:07 - 10:10It is all emptiness dancing.
-
10:10 - 10:13This is not something philosophical,
-
10:13 - 10:14but an entirely different way
-
10:14 - 10:17of interfacing with the world.
-
10:17 - 10:20Actually it's about dropping
the interface, -
10:20 - 10:23dropping the reducing valve which is
-
10:23 - 10:27the self-structure, and experiencing
your true nature -
10:27 - 10:29unmediated by the limited mind.
-
10:30 - 10:33The so-called outer world is transcended
-
10:33 - 10:38by realizing stillness,
which when realized, -
10:38 - 10:41includes that which it transcends.
-
10:42 - 10:46The duality of stillness and
movement collapses. -
10:47 - 10:51Realizing samadhi, this great awakening
-
10:51 - 10:54is just the beginning of the path.
-
10:54 - 10:58Patanjali says that the entire endeavor
-
10:58 - 11:01of yoga is aimed at the cessation
-
11:01 - 11:03of the whirlpool of the mind.
-
11:03 - 11:06'Chitta vritti nirodha'.
-
11:06 - 11:09You could say it is the cessation
of karma, -
11:11 - 11:14the cessation of deep unconscious patterns
-
11:14 - 11:18on many different levels.
-
11:18 - 11:21When we realize our true nature,
-
11:21 - 11:23we temporarily cease our identification
-
11:23 - 11:25and reaction to the mind.
-
11:27 - 11:30It's like pulling the plug on a fan.
-
11:30 - 11:33When we pulled the plug on a fan,
-
11:33 - 11:35inertia of the Fan's blades keeps it
-
11:35 - 11:38keeps it going as long as we don't
-
11:38 - 11:39plug the fan back in,
-
11:39 - 11:44it will eventually come to stillness.
-
11:44 - 11:46Karma is simply the tendency for energy
-
11:46 - 11:49to follow established pathways.
-
11:49 - 11:53When Consciousness slips back
into pattern, -
11:53 - 11:55it's like plugging in the fan.
-
11:55 - 11:58Energy follows Consciousness.
-
11:58 - 12:02Energy goes back into the old patterns.
-
12:04 - 12:07Another way of describing it,
-
12:07 - 12:09is through the law of inertia.
-
12:09 - 12:13A mind in motion stays in motion,
-
12:13 - 12:17unless acted upon by an outside force.
-
12:17 - 12:20In the matrix of the conditioned mind
-
12:20 - 12:22that we call the Universe,
-
12:22 - 12:24energy and thought cycle through fractal
-
12:24 - 12:28labyrinths that exist on a Continuum,
-
12:28 - 12:30for micro to macro levels,
-
12:30 - 12:33branching and exploring endlessly
-
12:35 - 12:38All spiritual practice is an intervention,
-
12:38 - 12:41an outside force,
-
12:41 - 12:44a Consciousness which diverts energy
-
12:44 - 12:47from flowing in the conditioned pathways.
-
12:47 - 12:51You have to be willing
to change your life. -
12:54 - 12:56Someone can do all the meditation
-
12:56 - 12:58in the world but if they go back to their
-
12:58 - 13:00same old patterns,
-
13:00 - 13:02their same old routine,
-
13:02 - 13:05then the wiring remains in place.
-
13:07 - 13:10Our unconscious motivations must be
-
13:10 - 13:13excavated and faced.
-
13:13 - 13:15If through great perseverance and
-
13:15 - 13:18determination, we managed to not plug in
-
13:18 - 13:20the fan, then there is an actual
-
13:20 - 13:23cessation of the 'vritties'.
-
13:23 - 13:26A profound silence that is born
-
13:26 - 13:28within the self-structure.
-
13:28 - 13:32Every time we identify with and react to
-
13:32 - 13:35some preference produced by the mind,
-
13:35 - 13:37we plug the fan back in.
-
13:37 - 13:40The longer we remain in awareness,
-
13:40 - 13:43the more of the samskaras are purified.
-
13:43 - 13:46The more the fan slows down,
-
13:46 - 13:48and the human vessel becomes
-
13:48 - 13:50more permeable to awareness,
-
13:50 - 13:54the more we become empty of self.
