This May be the Last Time - Discovering the hymns

  • 0:00 - 0:05
I knew I wanted to come to Oklahoma because every
time I came back it just seemed better and better.
  • 0:05 - 0:09
And when I was in New York,
    I really became enthused with
  • 0:09 - 0:13
Oklahoma music, perhaps because I was
a little bit homesick, and I started to learn
  • 0:13 - 0:18
about the tremendous volume of music that
was from Oklahoma that I never learned about.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
And so that is when I started my
goal of coming back to the state
  • 0:22 - 0:27
and putting together a book comprised
of all the significant Oklahoma music.
  • 0:27 - 0:31
I didn't realize what that would lead
me to, that I would actually be in
  • 0:31 - 0:35
a church environment where I would get
to learn about some of the most significant
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    Oklahoma music
    that exists.
  • 0:39 - 0:44
    Before I really understood
the power of the songs, the meaning,
  • 0:44 - 0:48
and all of that, it was really just trying to
get accustomed to what was happening.
  • 0:48 - 0:52
After a while, I got more friendly with
everybody and people accepted me better.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
I started asking a few questions, but
not too many questions, but I got to
  • 0:56 - 1:00
    a point where I asked a word
that was being said at the end of
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    prayers that was not amen,
    that would say another word.
  • 1:03 - 1:07
So I said in a joking way, well, I'm just
gonna bring cassette deck in here and
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    record it, and then you
guys can tell me what it is.
  • 1:10 - 1:14
And they said, okay, that's fine.
And so I did. So I then brought the
  • 1:14 - 1:18
    cassette home and out of
    the context of the church
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    and put in my cassette
    player, started listening to it.
  • 1:21 - 1:28

  • 1:28 - 1:34
All of a sudden I immediately because of my
music history background heard African spiritual music.
  • 1:34 - 1:39
Why am I hearing African spirituals
if this is a Muscogee Creek hymn?
  • 1:39 - 1:43
And that led me down this path to
understanding where the songs come from.
  • 1:43 - 1:47
And then once I started to understand
that, I realized it was a whole rich
  • 1:47 - 1:51
    story of American music history
    that had never been told.
  • 1:51 - 1:56
