Open Minor Chords (Em, Am, Dm) | Beginner Guitar Tips

  • 0:00 - 0:08
    [Music]
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    chords that use
  • 0:11 - 0:13
open strings are called open position
  • 0:13 - 0:14
    chords
  • 0:14 - 0:16
now there's different types of open
  • 0:16 - 0:17
position chords and today we're going to
  • 0:17 - 0:18
    take a look at
  • 0:18 - 0:20
minor chords we're going to learn e
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    minor
  • 0:22 - 0:27
    a minor and d minor
  • 0:27 - 0:29
now you'll notice by nature minor chords
  • 0:29 - 0:31
sound a little bit more dark and a
  • 0:31 - 0:31
    little bit
  • 0:31 - 0:33
sad in a way so they're really fun to
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    experiment with
  • 0:34 - 0:36
so let's start by taking a look at e
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    minor
  • 0:37 - 0:40
now e minor is using all six strings on
  • 0:40 - 0:41
the guitar so we'll just strum right
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    through all of them
  • 0:43 - 0:44
now to build this voicing we're going to
  • 0:44 - 0:47
use our low e string open
  • 0:47 - 0:49
followed by the second fret in front of
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    the a
  • 0:51 - 0:52
right behind that we have our ring
  • 0:52 - 0:55
finger second fret of the d
  • 0:55 - 0:58
followed by the top three strings open
  • 0:58 - 1:02
and that's our e minor chord
  • 1:02 - 1:04
now moving on to a minor we're only
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    going to strum the top
  • 1:06 - 1:09
five strings so from the a string down
  • 1:09 - 1:11
meaning we're not going to play the low
  • 1:11 - 1:12
e string at all so be careful you don't
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    strum that by accident
  • 1:15 - 1:16
now to build our a minor voicing we're
  • 1:16 - 1:19
gonna have our open a string
  • 1:19 - 1:21
followed by our middle finger on the
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    second fret of the d
  • 1:23 - 1:27
ring finger second fret of the g and
  • 1:27 - 1:27
    pointer
  • 1:27 - 1:30
first fret of the b then we have our
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    high e string open
  • 1:32 - 1:34
and we'll strum all five of those
  • 1:34 - 1:36
strings together again from the a
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    string down
  • 1:39 - 1:42
last we have d minor which is only using
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    the top four strings
  • 1:44 - 1:46
so we're going to not want to play the
  • 1:46 - 1:48
low e string or the a string so a little
  • 1:48 - 1:49
tricky here we just got to be really
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    accurate with that right hand
  • 1:53 - 1:55
now to build this voicing we have an
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    open d string
  • 1:57 - 1:59
followed by middle finger second fret of
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    the g
  • 2:00 - 2:03
string then we have our ring finger on
  • 2:03 - 2:06
the third fret of the b
  • 2:06 - 2:08
followed by our first finger on the
  • 2:08 - 2:12
first fret of the high e string
  • 2:13 - 2:15
now let's try putting all those together
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    into one chord progression
  • 2:17 - 2:20
so we're going to use e minor
  • 2:20 - 2:25
    a minor and d minor
  • 2:26 - 2:28
cool little strumming pattern let's try
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    this let's go
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    down down up up down
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    down down up up down
  • 2:36 - 2:38
and we'll do that two times on each
  • 2:38 - 2:40
chord so let's try that together
  • 2:40 - 2:44
    one two three four down
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    down up up down
  • 2:48 - 2:52
    a minor
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    d minor
  • 2:55 - 3:01
    [Music]
  • 3:02 - 3:04
open position minor chords are a really
  • 3:04 - 3:06
expressive awesome sound on the guitar
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    that you're going to use
  • 3:07 - 3:09
all the time when learning tunes and
  • 3:09 - 3:20
    writing your own songs
