Mindful Consumption | Thich Nhat Hanh (short teaching video)

  • 0:02 - 0:06
And the second kind for fruit is called
  • 0:06 - 0:10
    sensory impression.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    This kind of nutriment come
  • 0:17 - 0:24
through the way of the eyes,
ear, nose, tongue, body and mind.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    You consume
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    by reading articles.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
When you read an article, you consume,
  • 0:33 - 0:39
    and that article may contain
    a lot of toxins like
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    craving,
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    violence,
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    fear,
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    discrimination,
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    hate.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
When you watch television, you consume,
  • 0:51 - 0:56
    because the TV program
    may be full of poisons.
  • 0:57 - 1:00
When you drive through the city,
    you consume,
  • 1:00 - 1:05
because what you see in terms
    of advertisements,
  • 1:06 - 1:11
what you hear about, what you hear
    in terms of advertisements,
  • 1:11 - 1:13
they are also items of consumption.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
You don't go "I want to consume",
  • 1:16 - 1:19
but they force you to consume.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    Driving through the city
  • 1:21 - 1:28
you have to see these kinds of publicity.
  • 1:31 - 1:36
And that is why mindfulness help us
  • 1:36 - 1:39
to protect ourselves by the practice of
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    mindful consumption
  • 1:40 - 1:46
and that is the object of
    the fifth mindfulness training.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    Our young people watch television
    several hours a day,
  • 1:56 - 1:59
maybe two, maybe three or more,
  • 1:59 - 2:03
because their parents are so busy
  • 2:04 - 2:10
    And while watching television,
they allow the seed of craving,
  • 2:10 - 2:14
    of violence
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    in themselves to be watered
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    they keep growing, growing, growing
  • 2:21 - 2:25
    and this is very dangerous.
  • 2:27 - 2:33
Even conversations may be highly toxic.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
    What the other person say
    may be full of hate
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    or despair.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
And after one hour listening to him
    or to her,
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    you feel paralysed,
  • 2:42 - 2:45
so much toxin in what she said.
  • 2:45 - 2:50
And it's why don't listen too much
    to that kind of conversation.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
And if you are a psychotherapist
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    it's not wise that you
    spend all your day
  • 2:56 - 2:59
listening to the suffering of the people.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
Because you have seeds of suffering in you,
  • 3:04 - 3:07
and if you continue to listen to them
  • 3:07 - 3:10
the seed of suffering in you
    will be watered
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    again and again
  • 3:11 - 3:14
and some day you will get sick
  • 3:14 - 3:16
and you will go to another therapist.
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    (laughter)
  • 3:22 - 3:27
    And that is why
    the practice of a therapist
  • 3:27 - 3:31
    is to devote enough time
    to get in touch with...
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    with paradise.
  • 3:36 - 3:41
There must be hours for him or her
    to practice walking,
  • 3:41 - 3:42
    sitting,
  • 3:42 - 3:45
getting in touch with the wonders of life
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    for her, for their nourishment,
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    solidity
  • 3:49 - 3:55
    so that the therapist will
    have enough strength, to do,
  • 3:55 - 3:59
    to do the work
    listening to the suffering.
  • 4:00 - 4:04
And you have to know your limit.
  • 4:04 - 4:08
If your capacity is to receive
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    six person a day
  • 4:10 - 4:13
don't try to do more than six person.
  • 4:14 - 4:18
    You will, you'll burn out.
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    Your suffering will increase
  • 4:23 - 4:28
to the point that you can not,
you will not be able to continue.
  • 4:28 - 4:30
That is why as a therapist
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    you have to practice
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    like this,
  • 4:33 - 4:38
get in touch with the Third Noble Truth.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    Get in touch with the
  • 4:40 - 4:43
    refreshing and healing elements
    to nourish yourself,
  • 4:43 - 4:46
using mindfulness in order to look deeply
  • 4:46 - 4:49
    into the source of wellbeing
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    and practice mindful consumption
  • 4:51 - 4:55
    so that, so that
  • 4:55 - 4:58
    the negative seeds in you
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    will not be watered.
  • 5:05 - 5:10
    We have six doors
  • 5:13 - 5:17
    to God.
  • 5:17 - 5:21
    We have post a
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    inspector,
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    a soldier
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    in front of each door.
  • 5:27 - 5:28
    The door of the eyes,
  • 5:28 - 5:30
    the door of the ear,
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    the door of the nose,
  • 5:32 - 5:33
    the door of the tongue,
  • 5:33 - 5:34
    the door of the body,
  • 5:34 - 5:38
and the door of the mind.
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    And do not allow
  • 5:43 - 5:45
    the enemies
  • 5:45 - 5:48
    to penetrate into your citadel.
  • 5:49 - 5:54
    That is the practice of
    mindful consumption.
  • 5:55 - 5:56
    You select the film,
  • 5:56 - 5:59
    you select the article,
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    you select the music,
  • 6:01 - 6:04
you select the kind of conversation
  • 6:04 - 6:08
that you will not bring toxins, poisons
    into yourself
  • 6:08 - 6:12
This is the practice of self-protection
  • 6:12 - 6:14
and the protection of your family
  • 6:14 - 6:15
    of your community.
  • 6:15 - 6:17
    It is very urgent.
  • 6:18 - 6:23
    Step number one:
    the fifth mindfulness training
  • 6:25 - 6:26
    The basic practice
  • 6:26 - 6:29
for you and for your community.
  • 6:34 - 6:35
    If you don't
  • 6:35 - 6:39
and then they grow very big
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    and they tend to push
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    the door
  • 6:46 - 6:51
of mind consciousness to come up.
  • 6:51 - 6:55
    Usually,
  • 6:57 - 7:01
    we say that store consciousness
    is like the basement
  • 7:01 - 7:04
    and mind conciousness
    is like the living room.
  • 7:04 - 7:09
    and anything you don't like
    we put in the basement.
  • 7:09 - 7:13
    We want to keep the
    living room beautiful
  • 7:13 - 7:17
but the blocks of suffering in you
  • 7:17 - 7:20
they don't want to stay in the cave,
  • 7:20 - 7:22
    in the basement
  • 7:22 - 7:24
If the have become so strong
  • 7:24 - 7:26
    they just push the door
  • 7:26 - 7:30
and just settle here without your invitation.
  • 7:31 - 7:33
    Especially during the night
  • 7:33 - 7:36
when you have no means of control.
  • 7:36 - 7:37
    They push your door,
  • 7:37 - 7:41
    and go into mind consciousness.
  • 7:43 - 7:46
    And during the day also
  • 7:46 - 7:47
    the violence,
  • 7:47 - 7:48
    the craving,
  • 7:48 - 7:51
    the hate, the anger
  • 7:51 - 7:54
    are pushing hard.
  • 7:54 - 7:59
    Because you have allowed them
    to grow every day
  • 7:59 - 8:03
by the way of unmindful consumption.
  • 8:05 - 8:08
And that is why you try to resist,
  • 8:08 - 8:12
you try to close the door
  • 8:12 - 8:17
    very firm.
  • 8:18 - 8:21
You set up a kind of embargo here.
  • 8:21 - 8:23
    You don't allow them to,
  • 8:23 - 8:24
    you repress them.
  • 8:25 - 8:26
    And how do you repress?
  • 8:26 - 8:29
    You,
  • 8:29 - 8:31
    you try to,
  • 8:31 - 8:34
    to fill up mind consciousness
  • 8:34 - 8:36
    with other items
  • 8:36 - 8:40
and you do that by consumption.
  • 8:41 - 8:44
    You don't feel well,
  • 8:44 - 8:46
you feel that it's coming up
  • 8:46 - 8:49
    so you play the music
  • 8:49 - 8:52
    to keep the mind busy.
  • 8:52 - 8:55
You pick up the telephone and talk,
  • 8:55 - 8:57
you take the car and drive out,
  • 8:57 - 9:00
    you turn on the television,
  • 9:00 - 9:06
    you do everything to keep
    the living room occupied
  • 9:06 - 9:11
so that these blocks of pain
  • 9:11 - 9:14
have no chance to come up.
  • 9:14 - 9:16
    That is the policy
  • 9:16 - 9:18
    that many of us
  • 9:18 - 9:20
    adopt.
  • 9:24 - 9:26
    And the market outside
  • 9:26 - 9:28
    provide us
  • 9:28 - 9:33
with many items so that they
can bring into the living room
  • 9:34 - 9:36
    and fill up always,
    24 hours a day
  • 9:36 - 9:41
    In order for, you are
afraid that they will come up
  • 9:43 - 9:46
    And you know something?
    The thing you consume
  • 9:46 - 9:48
    like a television,
  • 9:48 - 9:51
    like a novel,
  • 9:51 - 9:54
    they might also contain
  • 9:54 - 9:56
    a lot of toxins
  • 9:56 - 9:57
    like a craving,
  • 9:57 - 9:59
    and hate,
  • 9:59 - 10:01
    and violence
  • 10:01 - 10:03
    and while you are
    consuming like that
  • 10:03 - 10:05
    these poisons fall
  • 10:05 - 10:10
    down into store consciousness.
  • 10:10 - 10:14
And then these blocks of suffering
  • 10:14 - 10:16
    grow.
  • 10:17 - 10:21
    Because they are the fruit
  • 10:21 - 10:23
    of unmindful consumption
  • 10:23 - 10:25
    in the past
  • 10:25 - 10:28
    and now, unmindful consumption
  • 10:28 - 10:31
    in the present moment
  • 10:32 - 10:36
continue to make them grow stronger.
  • 10:37 - 10:43
And this is a very, very
    dangerous situation.
  • 10:45 - 10:49
And that is why the first step is to stop
  • 10:49 - 10:53
    this kind of unmindful consumption,
  • 10:53 - 10:56
preventing these seeds, that are already important
  • 10:56 - 10:59
    not to grow any more.
  • 11:00 - 11:03
    The first step:
  • 11:03 - 11:07
    mindful consumption.
  • 11:10 - 11:13
And you have to discuss the strategy
    of mindful consumption
  • 11:13 - 11:15
    with your beloved one,
  • 11:15 - 11:18
    with members of your family.
  • 11:19 - 11:23
You have to meet in emergency
  • 11:23 - 11:26
like the cabinet of a government,
  • 11:26 - 11:27
    to meet in emergency
  • 11:27 - 11:31
to discuss a strategy for self-protection,
  • 11:31 - 11:33
    protection of the family,
  • 11:33 - 11:34
    of the couple.
  • 11:34 - 11:36
    Mindful consumption
  • 11:36 - 11:40
    is the object of the
    fifth mindfulness training.
