Example using algebra to find measure of complementary angles

  • 0:00 - 0:01
  • 0:01 - 0:05
So we're told that ray OL
    is perpendicular to ray ON.
  • 0:05 - 0:08
So OL is perpendicular to ON.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
So we know that this right
over here is a right angle,
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    or it's a 90-degree angle.
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    Then they tell us that
    the measure of angle LOM
  • 0:15 - 0:18
is equal to 2x plus 46.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
    So LOM-- so this angle
    right over here--
  • 0:22 - 0:25
is equal to 2x plus 46.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    Then they tell us that
    the measure of angle MON
  • 0:31 - 0:34
is equal to 3x minus 6.
  • 0:34 - 0:38
    So this angle right
over here is 3x minus 6.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    And so they ask
    us find angle MON.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
So we need to find this
    angle right over here.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
And we'd be able to find
it if we knew what x is.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
If we knew what x is, then
it's going to be 3 times
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    that minus 6.
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    Now, the one thing
    that we know is
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    that if we add up
    these two angles,
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    these are adjacent angles.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    And their outside rays
    form a right angle.
  • 0:57 - 1:00
So these two angles are going
to add up to 90 degrees.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
And I guess we can assume here
    that we're dealing in degrees.
  • 1:03 - 1:13
    So let's say that 2x
    plus 46 plus 3x minus 6
  • 1:13 - 1:17
    is going to add
    up to 90 degrees.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    These two angles
    are complementary.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    So it's going to add
    up to 90 degrees,
  • 1:22 - 1:23
or it's going to add up to 90.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    And now, we just
    have to simplify.
  • 1:25 - 1:25
    We have 2 x's.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    We have another 3 x's.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
So you add those two, and
    you're going to get 5 x's.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    And then you have 46.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
And you're going to subtract 6.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    So it's going to be
plus 40 is equal to 90.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    Subtract 40 from both sides.
  • 1:42 - 1:42
    So let's do that.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    Subtract 40 from both sides.
  • 1:45 - 1:49
    And on the left-hand side,
    you're just left with a 5x.
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    And on the right-hand side,
    you're left with a 50.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    Now, just divide
    both sides by 5.
  • 1:56 - 2:01
    And we are left with
    x is equal to 10.
  • 2:01 - 2:02
Now, our answer is not 10.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    We've just figured
    out what x is.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
What they ask us for is what's
    the measure of angle MON?
  • 2:07 - 2:12
    Well, we already know that
    the measure of angle MON
  • 2:12 - 2:23
is equal to 3x minus 6, which
is equal to 3 times 10 minus 6--
  • 2:23 - 2:27
I want to do that minus 6
    in that green color-- which
  • 2:27 - 2:33
    is equal to 24 degrees.
