WARN Winching Techniques

  • 0:00 - 0:02
-Hi, I'm Gary Harris of WARN Industries.
  • 0:02 - 0:06
We all know a winch is a versatile tool
used for recovery of a stuck vehicle,
  • 0:06 - 0:08
as well as moving a heavy load.
  • 0:08 - 0:11
What I'm gonna do today is give you some tips and techniques
  • 0:11 - 0:14
on how to get the most out of your
winch while you're out on the trail.
  • 0:14 - 0:18
For starters, always remember to wear gloves when operating a winch.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
Winch lines can develop sharp barbs and gloves will help protect your hands.
  • 0:21 - 0:25
Also, when reaching for your winch line, always grab it by the hook strap.
  • 0:25 - 0:29
This will help reduce the chance of injury to your hands and fingers.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
WARN's winching accessory kit includes several items that
will help in moving a heavy object.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
One of the most useful items found in the kit is a snatch block.
  • 0:36 - 0:41
When used properly, a snatch block can double a winch's pulling capacity
  • 0:41 - 0:43
and allow you to change the direction of your pull.
  • 0:43 - 0:48
Also in the WARN accessory kit, you'll find
two D-shackles and a tree trunk protector.
  • 0:48 - 0:53
The D-shackles are used for attaching the looped ends of
cables, straps, and snatch blocks to an object.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
The tree truck protector gives you an attachment point
  • 0:56 - 0:59
for the winch rope to go around trees and protect them from damage.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
These can be used to anchor to other items as well.
  • 1:02 - 1:07
These accessories can really come in handy when you
need to put your winch to work.
  • 1:07 - 1:11
And when it comes to winching, here's a few simple steps
and you'll be on your way in no time.
  • 1:11 - 1:15
The first thing you need to do is place
the clutch lever in the free spool position
  • 1:15 - 1:18
and pull out enough line to reach your anchor point.
  • 1:18 - 1:23
Next, secure the winch line to the anchor point by
utilizing the tree truck protector and the D-shackle.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
Now, turn the clutch lever to engage
  • 1:25 - 1:29
and put the winch line under a bit
    of tension,
making sure the anchor is secure.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
You can now begin making your recovery.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
If the pull is too difficult or if you're pulling a heavy UTV,
  • 1:35 - 1:38
you can use a snatch block to double your pulling power.
  • 1:38 - 1:42
Keep in mind that the double-line pull will reduce the recovery speed by half.
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    For even more information,
  • 1:44 - 1:46
consult the WARN Basic Guide to Winching Techniques
  • 1:47 - 1:50
available for download on WARN's website at warn.com.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    Well, there you have it.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
A few basic accessories and proper use of the winch
  • 1:55 - 1:57
and you can ride with confidence knowing that if you do get stuck,
  • 1:57 - 1:59
you've got a WARN winch to get you...
