-
ALISHA WILKINS: Alright. So!
-
Welcome to our social media training
-
for Tuesday, December 6th.
-
Um...
-
We are going to be talking about
where to post content
-
when you like, don't know
which channel to put it on,
-
when it comes to like Instagram Stories
or feed posts or something.
-
But, before I get started,
I just have a few housekeeping things.
-
So I'm going to share my screen.
-
Um...
-
There we go.
-
Alright!
-
Everybody can see that okay?
-
Sweet.
-
ALISHA: Just a few things.
-
You guys know that, um...
-
holidays can get kind of crazy
around here.
-
I'll do my best to respond,
-
but obviously,
I get that people are out,
-
and I'm going to be out,
but, um, that's okay.
-
And then I wanted to see
if anybody had any feedback
-
on the Instagram Story challenge.
-
If you liked it, if you didn't like it,
did you do it?
-
Anything to add there?
-
I saw some people doing it...
-
PARTICIPANT: Yeah, I did it,
I thought it was really fun.
-
I--I think the thing
that makes me nervous about,
-
being more interactive on Stories
is if people don't participate
-
in the new, like...I dunno, look lame?
-
But I was really pleasantly surprised
with how much our audience
-
was willing to participate.
So I'm glad that I did it for sure.
-
>> Yeah, so sometimes
—this is terrible, but—
-
sometimes I do a Q&A,
-
and I know that
I need to get some interaction,
-
and I want to show that we're an account
that will respond to your stuff.
-
So I might ask a few questions in there
just to show that like,
-
if you ask me a question on Instagram,
our account will respond.
-
And that has-
-
I've done that a couple times,
and as we've done more,
-
it's become more people
asking the questions, rather than me.
-
So, if that's something
that you're looking at,
-
trying to boost engagement
that way, I would... I don't know.
-
I- I liked it just to show our reputation
to our audience.
-
So, the next thing that I wanted
to just have you think about
-
—you don't need to answer
these two questions,
-
but just if you want to send me a message
or a thought—
-
is what kind of Canva templates
you would need?
-
Like, for posts
that you're doing regularly.
-
I'm still working on the for-each ones.
-
And then if there's any feedback
on the toolkits that I sent out,
-
I want to make sure that I'm helping you
and not just like adding to your plate.
-
So, from what I've heard,
everybody's liked them,
-
but if you wanna send me any feedback
-
about any templates you need,
like, if you're like,
-
"Ow, I'm constantly posting,
'We're closed for this holiday,'
-
or 'Now hiring,' or..."
-
You know, for-each events coming up,
like livestock or something.
-
I am working on those.
-
So let's get going, um...
-
The kind of topic is "Where do I post it?"
-
And, the first thing that came to my mind
was the part in The Grinch
-
where he's invited to the dinner
and he said, "But what would I wear?"
-
And, I think that's kind of how we feel
when we approach our social media is like,
-
"But what do I do with it?"
-
"I have this content, I have this post..."
-
And...
-
But what do I do with it
now that I know I want to post it.
-
So...
-
This is just a reminder about
the pillars of social media.
-
These are just my, y'know,
gospel-according-to-Alisha-type pillars.
-
This is what I try to do
when I'm creating a campaign,
-
when I'm doing social media,
is to do one of these six things.
-
And if it doesn't fit here,
then I don't do it,
-
or I try to make sure
that I'm hitting these pillars.
-
Again, you can have your own
for your brand
-
for your, uh, office.
-
It just all depends on
what you want to do with it.
-
ALISHA: So, I've made these two graphics
and they're a little wonky.
-
And I'm going to explain them.
-
But, we're going to go through, um...
-
"Where do I share that content?"
-
And I'm going to go through and talk
about each different...
-
question you can ask yourself
when you go to post something.
-
There--My camera seems kind of dirty.
-
Alright. So the first one is...
-
So, each--
-
Each slide's gonna talk about
-
whether you should do like
a Reels or a video,
-
Stories, or a feed post.
-
And this is for all types of social media.
-
Facebook, Instagram, um, I think that's--
-
Yeah, those are the main two
people are on.
-
Maybe TikTok, if you're on there.
-
So the thing to think about,
when you're posting something
-
or you have this piece of content
that you want to do something with.
-
You need to think about
who do you want to reach.
-
If you want to find new followers,
-
if you want people to see your content
and then come to your page,
-
new people are most likely
gonna see your stuff
-
on a Reel or a video, or a feed post.
-
Especially if you boost it.
-
If not--If you don't boost it, it's fine.
-
They can still show up organically, but.
-
Reels tend
to bring you the most...new eyes.
-
That might not necessarily, like--
-
They might not follow your page
—you can't guarantee that—
-
but it's more likely to be seen
by new people who don't know about,
-
um, your office, what you're offering,
that kind of thing.
-
If you want current followers
to know about an update...
-
Stories or a feed post is the best
-
'cause that's going to show up
organically in their feed.
-
Obviously Reels are still great,
videos are still awesome,
-
but this is kind of how I gauge, y'know,
-
"Who do I want to reach
with this content?"
-
Then the next one is,
"How long do I want it to last?"
-
So like, what's my shelf life
for this piece of content?
-
If it's something that's short,
sweet, doesn't need to be
-
saved on the page for a while,
I would make it into a Story.
-
So if it's a quick update, a quick post.
-
Maybe just like a little tidbit
of information like, um...
-
Something that doesn't need
to be long-lasting, or it's--it's like...
-
bite-sized.
-
I just put it on Instagram Stories, and
if I really want it to last longer though,
-
I can put it as a highlight.
-
If not, and I want it to be more evergreen
-
and people can, like,
go through our profile and find it,
-
I'd do more long-lasting.
-
So for instance, if it's a short story...
-
um, content.
-
So something like tips for...
-
writing thank-you notes,
in a livestock setting.
-
Or, "Here's a quick update about..."
-
"this event that's going on,"
I put it in Stories.
-
But if it's something I want
people to continue looking at,
-
for instance, our hours, or,
-
like, important dates,
I put it in my feed.
-
And you can always share your feed post
to your Story if you want to.
-
Another question I like to think is like,
"What kind of content is it?"
-
So, is it entertaining,
in-depth, short updates, photos?
-
So if they're photos from the event,
I share it in the feed.
-
If they're photos at the event,
—like the event's actually going on—
-
I put it on Instagram Stories.
-
If it's a link, um...
-
This is kind of how I gauge what I-
where I want it to be.
-
Now you notice on entertaining,
it can go anywhere because it really just-
-
Entertainment and kind of fun
can go basically anywhere.
-
If it's longer, more in-depth
information...
-
carousel posts do super well on Instagram.
-
If it's just short updates,
a quick Reel, like bite-sized--
-
So the attention span
of a Reel is like, this little,
-
but people are willing to read posts
that are longer
-
if they're like, a feed
rather than a video.
-
So that's kind of that part,
-
is, "What kind of content is it?"
-
And then the next part is,
"What do I want people to do with it?"
-
This is one of my main questions
I ask when I get content is,
-
"Do I want people to just know?
Do I want them to share and save it?"
-
Or do they want them to engage with me?
-
Um, and we're--
I'm going to go over an example
-
of how I planned out content
for this month
-
so you can see this in action, but.
-
If I know that this
is a very likely infographic to be sha--
-
like, information to be shared,
-
I'm going to put it as
a feed post or a Reel.
-
If it's just a quick Be-Informed that I--
I don't think people will share that much,
-
I just put it on Stories.
-
If I want-- like,
Megan was talking about,
-
"I want people to engage
with me a little bit more."
-
Stories tends to get more
audience engagement
-
than like, a post
-
—at least in my experience
-
with our main account.
-
And I should have put this caveat
at the beginning, but...
-
Every page is going to be
a little different
-
and you're going to have to
figure out what works for you.
-
And, um...
-
These are just
some base guidelines for you.
-
Okay. So then the next is,
"Where do I want it to show up and live?"
-
Meaning like, when people get
on the social media profile,
-
where do I want them to see it?
-
And so if you want it at the top
of the Instagram or Facebook page,
-
Stories are always at the top.
-
If you want it just in the newsfeed
as they're scrolling,
-
then a Reel or a post.
-
And then the FYP is the
For You page on Reels.
-
That's again, new people
who don't know your--your--
-
who don't follow you,
but they follow like-accounts.
-
And so they might see your stuff
as they're scrolling through Reels.
-
Another thing I ask is,
"What is the goal of my piece?"
-
So, is it to get new leads, new followers?
-
Is it to build my relationships?
-
Is it to promote things?
-
And these are all questions you can ask,
like, while you're um...
-
creating the content that'll help, y'know.
-
What size do I need to do?
-
Should it be text?
Should it be video?
-
Again, you can kind of tweak it
to how your audience is gonna be.
-
So! I wanted to just show you real quick.
-
So this is...
-
the calendar
that I used to get content
-
from faculty and staff for December,
which is food month.
-
So I took our most popular,
-
like, YouTube videos and website articles,
-
and I kind of did a few new topics
based on those views.
-
And I said, "Here's the medium
that I want them to deliver it to me in."
-
So I kind of, went through and said, okay,
-
if it's a recipe,
videos with recipes do really good.
-
So I'm going to make that
into, like, a video.
-
If it's just like chronic pain
and nutrition,
-
that's really interesting to us,
but I know our audience
-
is not likely to share it.
-
They are likely to just read it
and log it away.
-
Versus like an Instant Pot hack
—or electric programable--anyway—
-
c-cooker hack, people are more likely
to share that and save it.
-
So, this is kind of
what it looked like afterwards.
-
So then I went through on the right
—you can see it says posting method—
-
and I said, okay, I know that...
-
a Reel with a spaghetti squash recipe
is going to do really well
-
because I can get new people
to follow us.
-
People watch cooking videos
all the time on social media.
-
And they'll save it,
and they'll engage with it.
-
And so that's why I chose a Reel
for spaghetti squash.
-
Versus, like, a smoothie hack,
-
a Story that's just kind of short lived.
-
Fun, tidbit information
felt better than a Reel to me.
-
Just based on our audience.
-
As well as, like,
-
the mindful eating.
-
I felt like more people
are aware of that phrase.
-
And so I didn't feel the need
to put something out there new,
-
but almost just to remind people
that we do have experts in this topic.
-
So, [sighing] it's kind of--
-
about knowing your audience.
-
Knowing what things are going to act--
interact with and things they won't,
-
and then finding a good balance of like,
-
being able to share your content,
but also engaging with them.
-
So, with that said,
I just was going to open up to Q&A.
-
And I saw
we had some chats going while I was...
-
talking.
-
Oh, I like that idea, Tessa.
-
Tessa said to have Story templates.
-
Easy.
I can totally do something like that.
-
And then, Kylie,
I have done a Reels tutorial,
-
and you can see that.
I can send you a link later, but!
-
I'm going to write this down, Tessa,
'cause that was a good idea.
-
Are there any questions about
where do I put that content?
-
PARTICIPANT: And Alisha,
can I just clarify on the templates?
-
Like, the template would be great.
And then we can add the, like...
-
like, the engagement piece,
like, ask us a question
-
or those sorts of things on top of it?
-
>> I like that.
>> But then if it's already designed,
-
we can--it makes it a lot easier.
-
>> Absolutely.
-
I think that's great.
So it's like...
-
"What's your favorite holiday food?"
or whatever, and you put the graphic...
-
on, like, the sticker on it.
Does that make sense?
-
>> Right, yeah!
Like, we can add the stickers.
-
[stammering]
-
And like, "How you did the challenge,"
or if you had, like, the This-Or-That.
-
Like, I noticed you and I both did
a This-Or-That for Thanksgiving.
-
I'm like, "Oh, I could've just used hers
and added our own thing."
-
So anyway.
>> Yeah! I can do that.
-
And I love using templates on Canva
-
because then
you can make it your own if you want to,
-
or you can leave it with what I designed, but.
-
Anyway.
Okay.
-
Are there any questions?
-
...Or thoughts about where do I post it?
-
I know it's so-
it can seem really overwhelming, but
-
that's why I will shend out...
[stammering] Send.
-
I will send out these graphics
that just can help guide you a little bit.
-
If you're super confused as to
"where do I put this?" You know,
-
and there's not one
that's better than the others.
-
I think that's the other thing is,
you have to understand is that
-
they're all good.
It's just about your goals. So.
-
Participant: Is there a reason that you
-
couldn't use your content twice?
Like to do it as a like-
-
So the other day
we had our sock gnomes for each.
-
They made sock gnomes, and I posted
a couple things that night on our stories
-
just because that's like,
we did this tonight.
-
And then a few days later I posted like,
-
A carousel post that had multiple photos
of that same event.
-
>> No, totally.
-
You should like- reusing content
I think is one of the most
-
under-used strategies
when it comes to social media.
-
So I might do a Facebook Live
with someone.
-
And Alice, I'll get to your question.
-
And then later take a bite sized
quote from it to make it into a graphic.
-
Does that make sense?
>> Yeah.
-
>> So that's what the beauty of
social media is, is especially like
-
you can recycle content
and it's still really fresh and new.
-
That's why I like if you look at my...
-
subjects for this month,
-
all I did was look at our most popular
YouTube and website...
-
uh, viewed articles or videos.
-
And that's how I chose
my topics, is because I know
-
these are the things
that are already interesting our audience
-
or interest,
like our audience, is engaging with.
-
So how can I repurpose that content
in a new, fresh way that they stay engaged
-
while adding in a few things that I think
might, just based on trends and stuff, so.
-
Um, Alice,
I might have to look into that for you.
-
I don't know off the top of my head,
so I might chat you later privately.
-
And see why...
-
it said that....
-
Yeah, that's kind of interesting.
-
Do you mean, like, in the comment
or in, like, the caption?
-
Y'know, I'll just--
I'll message you, Alice.
-
I'll talk to you later.
[chuckles]
-
Okay.
Is there anything else?
-
Participant: You're still muted, Alice.
-
>> Oh thank you.
-
Alice: Sorry I said, Yeah,
-
if you could just email me
I'll- I'll be doing a live video
-
at 11:00 today
so I'll see if it continues and-
-
>> Okay.
>> yeah, just send me a message, thanks.
-
>> Okay.
-
Alright, I will send out this...
-
Graphic.
In both ways, because I didn't know...
-
the arrows got really overwhelming to me.
[chuckling]
-
I hope this is helpful.
-
Just to help you think about
where you want it.
-
And like Tessa said,
you can use things multiple times.
-
Like, there's no reason why
you can't post something on your feed,
-
and then share the post in your stories.
-
Y'know, or share something
while you're at the event,
-
and then later post
the final pictures of it.
-
Like I do that all the time.
-
You do like a behind the scenes
-
while the event's going on,
and then later you post the picture. So,
-
ultimately it just comes down
to what's going to work best
-
for your audience.
So, um,
-
I don't have a topic for next month.
-
If there's anybody who has a burning
desire to learn something,
-
um, shoot me a message
and we can go off of that.
-
These have been super fun this year, even
-
despite all of the crazy maternal stuff
that I was...
-
um, going through.
So I appreciate everybody.
-
I'm going to stop this...
-
So thanks for coming
this week- or this month,
-
and I will just see you guys later.
