Why does 3HO focus on Yoga? GB Yoga Fest 2016 - Q&A #1

  • 0:10 - 0:14
The thing you got to remember about
    what the word 3HO means
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    is Healthy, Happy, Holy.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    It's not called Sikh Dharma,
  • 0:21 - 0:24
3HO is an organization which tries
to promote a way of living.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
Which is Healthy, Happy and Holy.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    If you look at somebody
    who's doing yoga, who's chanting,
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    who's trying to stay away
    from drugs and alcohol
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    other things that are polluting
    their body.
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    They're doing fitness,
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    they're meditating,
  • 0:43 - 0:47
    they're going to get
the Bliss of meditation if they work hard.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    When you experience the Anand,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    Anand meaning Bliss of
    the connection to God.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    You're going to know
this is the best thing ever
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    it's better than drugs and
    anything else out there.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    You gonna be healthy, happy,
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    and you're walking a path
    of the Holy people.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
All the holy people in the history of
mankind have always walked this path.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
Of trying to be good and spiritual.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    You're on the path.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
You got to remember Yogi ji
    didn't say this is Sikhi.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
He said this is Kundalini yoga
  • 1:24 - 1:25
We can't fault him for it.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
From the angle of the Sikh philosophy,
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    what would the Guru say
    about Kundalini yoga?
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    Firstly they don't criticize it,
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    in the sense that
    they say it's pointless.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
Because if you follow a philosophy,
  • 1:38 - 1:40
it doesn't mean you are that philosophy.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
What I mean by that is let's say
    you met 100 Hindus,
  • 1:45 - 1:48
you couldn't say they all believe in this.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    because they might not.
  • 1:50 - 1:54
One Hindu might believe in one God
another in 3, another in 100.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
In the same sense you can't say
    everybody in Kundalini yoga
  • 1:57 - 1:58
    has one view.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
Nor can you say that the Guru
is going to criticize every single person
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    who's doing one thing.
  • 2:03 - 2:07
There are certain practices that Guru
criticize, but they don't criticize people
  • 2:08 - 2:10
Because you can't judge each person,
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    each person's an individual.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
They're within it that organization or
    they're doing that thing.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
But that doesn't mean they have
    the same belief
  • 2:18 - 2:20
Which is why you've got arguments
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    within the Sikh Community,
    Taksali/AKJ.
  • 2:23 - 2:27
Somebody who is Taksali might not
have same view as another Taksali.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    Somebody is AKJ might not
have the same view as AKJ.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    They're arguing on philosophy,
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    but actually you've got people.
  • 2:34 - 2:35
Guru is not interested in people.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    In Guru Granth Sahib Ji-
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    the highest form of Yog,
  • 2:42 - 2:42
    Yog means Union.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    Union with God.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    Described as the highest Yog
    is through Kirtan.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    Praising God, singing God's praises,
  • 2:53 - 2:55
is given the status of being
    the highest form of Yoga.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
If you take somebody of the street,
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    who has never done any
    meditation before,
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    somebody who's never done
    any kind of healthy living.
  • 3:02 - 3:06
    They've been told it's okay
to drink or smoke, it's fine.
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    You're trying to get them
    to startsinging God's name.
  • 3:10 - 3:13
It's going to be far away from them.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
It's kind of like a yoga,
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    it's quite a good introduction
    to the spiritual life.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    Because within yoga as you
    start to meditate,
  • 3:23 - 3:25
you start to experience the Divine.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
You also start to understand that
you got to be purifying yourself,
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    physically and the toxins start
    to leave your body.
  • 3:33 - 3:36
You'll experience a little bit about
  • 3:37 - 3:39
the philosophy of Karma and reincarnation.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    Once someone's gone through that
    for a while,
  • 3:42 - 3:44
understood how the system works in a way.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
They might even be ready then,
for you to tell them actually.
  • 3:48 - 3:51
It's all about chanting God's name and
    experiencing God through meditation.
  • 3:52 - 3:53
That is the purpose of life.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    Sometimes it's very hard
    to take somebody,
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    Because people have started
    doing Kundalini yoga.
  • 3:59 - 4:02
Like in Russia they use it in the prisons
for people that are drug addicts.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
It's very hard to get that person
    to understand.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    What they've got to do
    it's quite a good intro.
  • 4:10 - 4:12
Also Yogi ji never said this Sikhi,
  • 4:13 - 4:14
    he said this is yoga.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
For the people that came in for yoga
    it worked for them.
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    Some of those guys
    they became more spiritual.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    And they said
I want to do something further
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    Now Yogi ji-
  • 4:25 - 4:27
and like myself and other people
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    the one's that realize
    that they are not Satguru.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
They don't want to be Satguru.
  • 4:33 - 4:34
    They understand
that don't submit your ego to me.
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    Because I'm a flawed person.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    They'll join you to somebody
    who's not flawed.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
Somebody better than you and them
  • 4:41 - 4:43
Who is that is that? The Guru.
  • 4:44 - 4:47
Yogi ji then said, you guys have started
    to become quite spiritual,
  • 4:47 - 4:50
you started to follow this quite a lot
    and keen on progressing.
  • 4:50 - 4:51
    I can't take you there.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
You're going to have to find Guru Ji,
  • 4:54 - 4:57
he joined them to Guru Raam Daas Ji.
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    That is a perfect Guru.
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    If you give yourself
    to Guru Raam Daas Ji,
  • 5:02 - 5:04
you're going to be in the right hands.
  • 5:05 - 5:06
If you give yourself to me,
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    anybody is valuable apart from
    the Guru.
  • 5:12 - 5:14
Now it's Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    When you look at yoga
    in Guru Granth Sahib Ji
  • 5:17 - 5:18
it's not described in negative ways.
  • 5:19 - 5:20
    It is described
  • 5:21 - 5:25
as that it's not as high in terms
    of meditation.
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    As singing God's name
  • 5:27 - 5:29
you got to understand is some people
    don't come
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    into yoga to find God.
  • 5:33 - 5:37
    It's the truth in it,
some people just come to get a bit fit,
  • 5:36 - 5:38
to get a bit of mental peace.
  • 5:39 - 5:42
If you said to them to become
    religious and believe in God
  • 5:42 - 5:44
    they're going to say
    I don't want that.
  • 5:44 - 5:47
Because in their mind they've already
    got the concept of religion
  • 5:47 - 5:48
and they are fed up of it.
  • 5:48 - 5:51
The people on the street shouting,
    arguing each other
  • 5:51 - 5:53
People that are fighting with each other,
    with guns
  • 5:53 - 5:55
and saying in the name of God.
  • 5:55 - 5:57
    They've already ruined
    the name of religion.
  • 5:57 - 6:00
Out there religion isn't very well
    regarded.
  • 6:00 - 6:03
If you tell them to become religious,
    God is the truth,
  • 6:03 - 6:04
    they're going to ignore.
  • 6:04 - 6:07
If you say to them let's find
    a bit of mental peace
  • 6:08 - 6:10
let's meditate you will feel better.
  • 6:10 - 6:13
They'll think, I can deal with that
    I need some peace.
  • 6:14 - 6:19
    Ultimately it's same as experiencing
    God is the only way.
  • 6:20 - 6:20
    To lose-
  • 6:22 - 6:25
to feel the best you can ever feel
    because that is your essence.
  • 6:25 - 6:26
    Essence is the one.
  • 6:27 - 6:30
But the word God has got a bad rep.
  • 6:31 - 6:33
And the word religion has got a bad rep.
  • 6:33 - 6:37
Sometimes people can't cope with that,
you got to remember that as well.
  • 6:37 - 6:39
Getting upset and annoyed with people
  • 6:39 - 6:42
    that are doing things differently
    to what we're used to.
  • 6:42 - 6:45
To be honest if you went to Udasi Dera
  • 6:45 - 6:46
    you'd be quite surprised.
  • 6:48 - 6:50
They will call themselves Sikh Udasis.
  • 6:51 - 6:52
You might not even heard them.
  • 6:52 - 6:54
    If you go to Nirmala
  • 6:54 - 6:57
and see the Nirmala how they live
    you'd be quite surprised.
  • 6:58 - 7:00
The people living in the west,
  • 7:00 - 7:03
they've got a very limited understanding.
  • 7:04 - 7:07
How wide Sikhi is in India.
  • 7:08 - 7:10
Sikhi is quiet wide in India.
  • 7:10 - 7:13
But when it comes to Devi-Devte
    Shiva and all
  • 7:13 - 7:15
Guru Granth Sahib Ji is very clear.
  • 7:15 - 7:18
    They are not the people
    to submit your ego to.
  • 7:18 - 7:20
    Guru Granth Sahib Ji and
    Guru Gobind Singh Ji
  • 7:21 - 7:22
    they're both very clear.
  • 7:23 - 7:28
    Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu these deities
    they have still got ego.
  • 7:28 - 7:30
If you read their stories within
    the Hindu Granths,
  • 7:31 - 7:33
you understand they still act from ego.
  • 7:34 - 7:37
    I'll give you an example
    this is a true one.
  • 7:37 - 7:42
Shiva got punished to many years of
    coming to Earth,
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    walking and wandering the Earth
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    the reason being-
  • 7:47 - 7:48
he was having a chat with Vishnu,
  • 7:49 - 7:51
and he said who is the greatest?
  • 7:52 - 7:55
    Shiva said I'm the greatest
Brahma goes no I'm the greatest.
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    There's ego straight way.
  • 7:57 - 8:00
Then Shiva got annoyed with Brahma
and cut one of his heads off
  • 8:01 - 8:03
    For that he got punished
  • 8:03 - 8:06
Because you can't kill a Brahmin within
    the Hindu scriptures.
  • 8:06 - 8:08
Brahma is is the original Brahmin.
  • 8:08 - 8:10
You can't kill one without getting
    punished.
  • 8:10 - 8:12
He had to come to Earth for many years
  • 8:14 - 8:15
    It's nothing biased.
  • 8:16 - 8:18
It's just every Hindu will say
    that's what happened
  • 8:19 - 8:21
They were not free of ego.
  • 8:21 - 8:23
    Another example is-
  • 8:24 - 8:27
Vishnu to get the Amrit from the
    demons,
  • 8:29 - 8:32
he assumed the form of a beautiful
    woman called Mohini.
  • 8:33 - 8:37
He became a beautiful woman and
he enticed the Amrit from the demons.
  • 8:38 - 8:40
When Shiva heard the story from Vishnu
  • 8:40 - 8:42
how he'd become a beautiful woman,
  • 8:42 - 8:44
and the demons lost their sense.
  • 8:45 - 8:47
And run after him and he taking Amrit,
    he stolen it.
  • 8:48 - 8:51
    Shiva said show me
    what you look like then.
  • 8:51 - 8:54
Vishnu said I can't show you.
You won't be able to cope
  • 8:55 - 8:57
    He goes no let me
  • 8:57 - 9:00
    Vishnu then turned into Mohini
    just for a little while.
  • 9:01 - 9:03
Showed him how beautiful he looked,
  • 9:03 - 9:06
and then Shiva lost it he ran after her.
  • 9:08 - 9:12
And that all happened in front
    of his wife.
  • 9:12 - 9:16
He lost even the sense of behavior
in front of his own wife.
  • 9:17 - 9:18
    They have got ego.
  • 9:19 - 9:22
And Guru Granth Sahib Ji does not give
    them the status of Satguru.
  • 9:23 - 9:25
Guru Nanak Dev Ji is higher than
    Brahma, Vishnu or Mahesh
  • 9:26 - 9:28
    Because they haven't got ego.
  • 9:28 - 9:31
Let's say Somebody is an expert
    in martial arts,
  • 9:33 - 9:35
    doesn't make them perfect.
  • 9:36 - 9:38
Doesn't mean give you ego to them,
  • 9:39 - 9:42
but you could learn martial arts
    from them.
  • 9:42 - 9:44
Shiva had this skill of yoga,
  • 9:45 - 9:47
and he his Yogi, covered in blue
  • 9:49 - 9:50
he used to live as a Yogi.
  • 9:50 - 9:52
But interesting enough as a yogi
    he still had hair.
  • 9:53 - 9:54
He had a beard as well.
  • 9:54 - 9:56
Lot of times you don't see Shiva
    with a beard.
  • 9:56 - 9:59
From the original pictures he always
    had a big beard.
  • 9:59 - 10:02
And he had a top knot on his head.
  • 10:02 - 10:04
    They're not the Satguru.
  • 10:04 - 10:07
They can't level up to somebody
    who is pure of ego.
  • 10:11 - 10:19
that's it and g go in writingsh they make reference to um Brahma
  • 10:15 - 10:19
    vishu and Mah and they
  • 10:28 - 10:31
    say
  • 10:33 - 10:39
they said that all these Brahma vishu
  • 10:34 - 10:42
and Mahesh the Brahma vishu and Shiva
  • 10:39 - 10:45
they all going to die CU they haven't
  • 10:42 - 10:47
become free of ego so they they they're
  • 10:45 - 10:49
still subject to life and death they're
  • 10:47 - 10:51
not Immortals because they haven't freed
  • 10:49 - 10:51
    themselves from
  • 10:53 - 10:57
    [Music]
  • 10:58 - 11:01
    ego
