Single and Plied Yarns

  • 0:04 - 0:07
All yarns are originally spun as single yarns.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    For certain end uses,
  • 0:09 - 0:12
single yarns may be combined to produce a ply yarn.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
Two-ply yarns are the most common.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
These are produced by combining two single
  • 0:18 - 0:20
yarns together and applying twist to them.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
The twist direction used in the ply is almost always
  • 0:23 - 0:27
applied in the opposite direction to the single yarn's twist.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
That means most ply yarns will contain S twist.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
Ply yarns are used where extra strength and evenness are required.
