MacBook Buying Guide for 2025 — Air or Pro?

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    MacBook Buying Guide for 2025.
  • 0:02 - 0:05
    So now that we have
the MacBook Air with the M4 chip,
  • 0:05 - 0:08
    we have the M4 Pros,
the M4 Maxes, and stuff like that.
  • 0:08 - 0:09
Basically, we have the whole line-up.
  • 0:09 - 0:12
I wanted to go through what I think
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    are the ones worth buying,
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    which ones are maybe--
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    Maybe you should avoid.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
And sort of just going through
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    which one you should buy
  • 0:20 - 0:20
    based on
  • 0:20 - 0:22
what you're going to use the machine for,
  • 0:22 - 0:23
    because I think pretty much
  • 0:23 - 0:25
all of the MacBooks for sale, right now,
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    from Apple brand new,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    are all good buys.
  • 0:28 - 0:28
    Now, of course,
  • 0:28 - 0:30
some of them are better buys than others,
  • 0:30 - 0:32
which I wanted to go through in this video.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
So I have a bunch of MacBooks here.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
I have the 13 inch Air,
  • 0:35 - 0:36
I have the 15 inch Air,
  • 0:36 - 0:37
this 15 inch Air, by the way,
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    it's it's an older model,
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    it's M2,
  • 0:39 - 0:40
but I just have it here
  • 0:40 - 0:41
    for demonstration purposes
  • 0:41 - 0:43
to show you the size difference, basically.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
And then I have 14 inch Pro,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    I don't have a 16 inch Pro on hand,
  • 0:47 - 0:50
but just imagine this but a bit bigger
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    and a bit thicker.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    I have a table here,
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    which I'll put on screens
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    that you guys can see.
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    In the table,
  • 0:55 - 0:56
I have the MacBook Air 13 inch,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    the MacBook Air 15 inch,
  • 0:58 - 1:00
the MacBook Pro 14 inch with the M4 chip,
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    the MacBook Pro 14 inch
    with the M4 Pro chip
  • 1:03 - 1:05
and the MacBook Pro 16 inch
    with the M4 Pro chip.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
So all of these are the base models.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
I am primarily going to be covering
    the base models.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
Now, when it comes to sort of upgrading
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    the base models
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    with different options and stuff,
  • 1:14 - 1:18
of course, there is the so-called
    Apple tax, right?
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    They do charge a premium
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    for upgrading the models.
  • 1:21 - 1:22
So I would highly recommend actually
  • 1:22 - 1:24
trying to stick with the base models
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    as much as possible
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    and then only upgrading
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    if you absolutely need to
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    on unified memory and storage.
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    Because right now
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    what makes the Air models
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    so, so good value
  • 1:36 - 1:37
is that they've lowered the price,
  • 1:37 - 1:38
    Apple have lowered the price,
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    which is unheard of,
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    they never lower the prices
    of their products.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
They have lowered the price of the M4 Air,
  • 1:44 - 1:46
both the 13 inch and the 15 inch.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
You can now save $100 on them.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    So it starts as $1,000.
  • 1:50 - 1:54
At $1,000, the M4 Air really is
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    absolutely incredible value.
  • 1:57 - 1:58
    I can't state enough
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    how good value this is.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
This is one of the best value laptops, period.
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    I don't know why
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    you would consider anything else
  • 2:05 - 2:06
when you're looking for a laptop
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    around the thousand dollar mark.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    It also has now
    the upgraded unified memory.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
So before, 8 GB was the minimum.
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    Now, it's 16 GB.
  • 2:15 - 2:15
    And let me tell you,
  • 2:15 - 2:17
I've been using this over the last week
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    for all of my work,
  • 2:18 - 2:20
and I've kind of just realised that 16 GB,
  • 2:20 - 2:22
even for the heavy stuff that I do,
  • 2:22 - 2:23
    is fine.
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    If it's fine for me,
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    with what I'm doing,
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    video editing, photo editing,
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    sort of heavy stuff,
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    then for everyone else
  • 2:28 - 2:30
who's doing a lot less intensive stuff,
  • 2:30 - 2:32
they are going to be completely fine.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
This is out of all of the MacBooks,
  • 2:35 - 2:36
I think, out of everything in the line-up,
  • 2:36 - 2:39
this is the best value MacBook
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    you can get right now.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    However,
  • 2:41 - 2:43
if you're not interested in a MacBook,
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    bit of a sidetrack here,
  • 2:45 - 2:46
if you're not intered in a MacBook,
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    and you have a monitor,
  • 2:47 - 2:48
you have a keyboard and mouse,
  • 2:48 - 2:50
this is actually the best value Mac.
  • 2:51 - 2:53
This is the Mac Mini with M4 chip.
  • 2:53 - 2:54
Yeah, if you don't need a MacBook,
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    and you're happy to have
    your computer on a desk
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    connected to an external monitor
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    or whatever else,
  • 2:58 - 3:00
then yeah, this is the best value.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
But considering that you're paying $1,000
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    and you're getting a display,
  • 3:05 - 3:05
    a keyboard, mouse,
  • 3:05 - 3:07
everything all in this one package
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    which you can carry around,
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    which is also incredibly thin,
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    blows me away every time,
  • 3:10 - 3:11
when I look at this thing,
  • 3:11 - 3:12
    how thin it is.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    It is so, so thin.
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    It's just insane.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    Yeah, this is by far
    the best value machine.
  • 3:17 - 3:18
With the base model M4 Air,
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    you get the 10-core CPU
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    and the 8-core GPU.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
But if you do upgrade to the 15 inch Air,
  • 3:24 - 3:25
    you get the 10-core CPU
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    and the 10-core GPU.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
So you get two extra GPU cores
    with the 15 inch Air.
  • 3:30 - 3:31
But with the 15 inch Air,
  • 3:31 - 3:34
the only reason you would choose this
  • 3:34 - 3:36
is for the larger screen size.
  • 3:36 - 3:38
I don't think there is anything else
    really going for it,
  • 3:38 - 3:40
because you are paying $200 extra
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    for the larger screen size.
  • 3:41 - 3:42
I think this actually makes it
  • 3:42 - 3:44
one of the worst value MacBooks
    in the line-up,
  • 3:44 - 3:46
but that doesn't mean it's bad.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    It's like saying
  • 3:48 - 3:49
    all of them are amazing
  • 3:49 - 3:51
and one is just less amazing
    than the other.
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    That's the way it is.
  • 3:52 - 3:55
So yeah, if you really want that 15 inch size,
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    and you don't want
    the 16 inch MacBook Pro,
  • 3:57 - 3:59
which is quite bulky and big and thick,
  • 4:00 - 4:01
then yeah, it probably makes sense.
  • 4:01 - 4:02
Maybe it might make sense for you
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    to spend that $200
  • 4:03 - 4:04
to go for the 15 inch Air.
  • 4:04 - 4:06
I think either of the MacBook Airs
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    are great for anyone
  • 4:07 - 4:09
who is just doing simple day-to-day stuff
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    like you're browsing the web,
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    you're maybe editing
the odd video here and there
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    doing some odd photo editing,
  • 4:16 - 4:17
    spreadsheets, documents,
  • 4:18 - 4:19
    anything like that.
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    This is going to be
    completely fine for you.
  • 4:21 - 4:23
Because I've been using it for the past week,
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    it has made me realise
  • 4:24 - 4:28
how this pretty much covers 80 to 90%
  • 4:28 - 4:30
of what I need it to do.
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    I'm only paying the extra
  • 4:31 - 4:34
with these sort of M4 Pro, M4 Pro Max,
  • 4:34 - 4:35
    the 14 inch MacBook Pro.
  • 4:35 - 4:38
Just so that the sort of
    10, 20% frustration
  • 4:38 - 4:39
    that I get from this
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    is handled by these machines.
  • 4:41 - 4:41
    That's really it.
  • 4:41 - 4:43
The other limiting factor with these
  • 4:43 - 4:45
is that you do only have
    two Thunderbolt ports.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
They are Thunderbolt 4, which is good.
  • 4:47 - 4:48
    You have two Thunderbolt ports
  • 4:48 - 4:49
    and obviously you have
    the MagSafe charging,
  • 4:49 - 4:50
    which is nice.
  • 4:50 - 4:52
So you can still have the two ports free
  • 4:52 - 4:54
while you are charging the device.
  • 4:54 - 4:56
There is, of course, a headphone jack,
  • 4:56 - 4:57
but maybe it would have been nice
  • 4:57 - 4:59
to have maybe an extra Thunderbolt port.
  • 4:59 - 5:00
But I think a lot of people
  • 5:00 - 5:01
who are buying a machine like this
  • 5:01 - 5:03
probably aren't actually connecting it up
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    to many peripherals very often.
  • 5:05 - 5:08
So I can see why they have
    two Thunderbolt ports in here,
  • 5:08 - 5:10
it's probably enough for most people.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    Battery life on these machines
    is up to 18 hours
  • 5:12 - 5:13
    depending on your usage.
  • 5:13 - 5:15
    And yeah, you will have
    no issue whatsoever
  • 5:16 - 5:17
    going through a full day
  • 5:17 - 5:18
without having to connect it up to power.
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    Unless you're doing something
    like super heavy,
  • 5:20 - 5:22
like video editing or something like that.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    Most people are going
to be able to go a full day
  • 5:24 - 5:26
without having to connect to power.
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    And that's the experience
    that I've been having
  • 5:28 - 5:29
    with these two machines.
  • 5:29 - 5:30
If you do feel like you need
    to upgrade the storage
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    on either of the Airs,
  • 5:31 - 5:33
I would think very, very carefully,
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    I would think very hard
  • 5:35 - 5:36
    about how often
  • 5:36 - 5:38
and how much storage do you actually need
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    and is it worth instead
  • 5:40 - 5:43
buying an external SSD, an external drive.
  • 5:43 - 5:45
    Because you can get drives
  • 5:45 - 5:46
which are much thinner than this,
  • 5:46 - 5:47
    This is quite thick,
  • 5:47 - 5:48
    but you can get drives,
  • 5:48 - 5:48
    which are much thinner
  • 5:48 - 5:50
that can just fit in a bag or whatever,
  • 5:50 - 5:51
    fit in your pocket
  • 5:51 - 5:52
and you can have extra storage
  • 5:52 - 5:54
without having to pay the sort of
    premium Apple tax,
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    because they're charging $200
  • 5:56 - 5:58
each time you wanna upgrade the storage,
  • 5:58 - 5:59
which is a lot of money.
  • 5:59 - 6:00
    For $200,
  • 6:00 - 6:02
you can get a 2 TB
    external drive no issues,
  • 6:02 - 6:03
    and you'll be completely fine
    with these machines.
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    ---So think very, very hard
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    if you do actually need
    to upgrade the storage
  • 6:07 - 6:09
because I don't think it is worth it
  • 6:09 - 6:12
unless you have a very specific use case.
  • 6:12 - 6:14
Next up, bang in the middle of the line-up,
  • 6:14 - 6:17
is the MacBook Pro 14 inch
    with the M4 chip,
  • 6:17 - 6:19
not the M4 Pro chip but the M4 chip,
  • 6:19 - 6:21
the same chip that you get in the Airs.
  • 6:21 - 6:24
    That model goes for $1,599.
  • 6:24 - 6:27
You get 16 GB of unified memory
  • 6:27 - 6:29
and you get 512 GB of SSD storage.
  • 6:29 - 6:31
But there are some other benefits
    to that model.
  • 6:31 - 6:33
You get three Thunderbolt 4 ports,
  • 6:33 - 6:36
    so an extra port compared
    to the standard Airs,
  • 6:36 - 6:37
you get an SD card slot,
  • 6:37 - 6:39
and you get an HDMI port.
  • 6:39 - 6:40
So there's a lot more connectivity
  • 6:40 - 6:42
when it comes to the 14 inch.
  • 6:42 - 6:45
But the 14 inch is thicker and heavier.
  • 6:45 - 6:46
I have the 14 inch here.
  • 6:46 - 6:48
And yeah, it's such a big difference
  • 6:48 - 6:49
    compared to the 13 inch.
  • 6:50 - 6:52
The 13 inch is so light.
  • 6:53 - 6:54
    This is actually quite bulky,
  • 6:54 - 6:55
even though it's not even a 16 inch.
  • 6:55 - 6:56
    This is a 14 inch.
  • 6:57 - 6:59
    I don't have any issues
    carrying it with me,
  • 6:59 - 7:00
    when I'm travelling,
  • 7:00 - 7:01
    when I'm going on holiday,
  • 7:01 - 7:03
when I'm going for any work trips
    or anything like that.
  • 7:03 - 7:05
It's not an issue carrying it.
  • 7:05 - 7:07
And it's also my personal favourite,
  • 7:07 - 7:08
    the 14 inch size.
  • 7:08 - 7:09
For me it makes a lot more sense.
  • 7:09 - 7:12
I actually think the 16 inch
    is too big for me,
  • 7:13 - 7:15
especially because if I do need
    the extra screen estate,
  • 7:15 - 7:17
    I usually just connect it
    to an external monitor.
  • 7:17 - 7:19
    The other huge benefit
    of the 14 inch Pro
  • 7:19 - 7:20
    over the Air
  • 7:20 - 7:21
    is the better display.
  • 7:21 - 7:23
You get 120 Hz has ProMotion display,
  • 7:23 - 7:24
    which is also Mini LED.
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    It's big significant difference
  • 7:27 - 7:28
    compared to the Air.
  • 7:28 - 7:30
It also is double the brightness.
  • 7:30 - 7:32
The Air is a 500 nits in brightness,
  • 7:32 - 7:35
but the 14 inch Pro goes
to a 1,000 nits in brightness
  • 7:35 - 7:35
    and that's sustained.
  • 7:35 - 7:38
It can even go up to 1,600
  • 7:38 - 7:39
    when you're watching HDR content.
  • 7:39 - 7:42
So if you plan to use your laptop outside
  • 7:42 - 7:44
and maybe in brightly lit rooms
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    like cafes or whatever else,
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    yeah, that can actually make
    a big, big difference.
  • 7:47 - 7:49
    Just being able to see
    what you're working on.
  • 7:49 - 7:52
The battery life as well is 6 hours more
  • 7:52 - 7:53
    compared to the Airs.
  • 7:53 - 7:55
Naturally, because it's a thicker machine
  • 7:55 - 7:57
they can fit a thicker battery in it.
  • 7:57 - 8:00
    So if you are someone
    who wants better battery life,
  • 8:00 - 8:01
    who wants a better screen,
  • 8:01 - 8:03
who wants the ports and stuff like that,
  • 8:03 - 8:05
but you're happy with the performance
    of an M4 chip,
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    this is, I think, actually
    pretty worth the upgrade.
  • 8:08 - 8:10
I think $1,599 that it goes,
  • 8:10 - 8:12
    I think that is actually
    a good price for it.
  • 8:12 - 8:12
    In the past,
  • 8:12 - 8:14
I wouldn't have recommended the laptop
  • 8:14 - 8:15
in the middle of the line-up,
  • 8:15 - 8:16
    but right now,
  • 8:16 - 8:17
if you don't wanna spend $2,000
  • 8:17 - 8:20
going up to the M4 Pro machines,
  • 8:20 - 8:22
    yeah, $1,600 dollars,
  • 8:22 - 8:23
I think this is really good value.
  • 8:23 - 8:25
    You're getting a lot
  • 8:25 - 8:26
    more sort of Pro features
  • 8:26 - 8:27
    compared to the standard Air.
  • 8:27 - 8:29
And then the 14 inch Pro
  • 8:29 - 8:30
    with the M4 Pro chip,
  • 8:30 - 8:32
    it goes for $2,000.
  • 8:32 - 8:34
So you are spending $400 more
compared to the one below it,
  • 8:34 - 8:36
which just has the M4 chip.
  • 8:36 - 8:37
But you do get the M4 Pro chip
  • 8:37 - 8:38
    and as the name suggests,
  • 8:38 - 8:41
that's a Pro chip, Pro level chip,
  • 8:41 - 8:44
you also get 24 GB of unified memory.
  • 8:45 - 8:46
    So 16 GB,
  • 8:46 - 8:47
    16 GB, 16 GB,
  • 8:47 - 8:50
but 24 GB when you go up to this model.
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    So for the $400 extra,
  • 8:52 - 8:54
you're essentially getting the same design,
  • 8:54 - 8:55
    the same chassis,
  • 8:55 - 8:57
all the same ports and everything,
  • 8:57 - 8:58
but you're getting the M4 Pro chip
  • 8:58 - 9:01
    and you're getting 24 GB
    of unified memory.
  • 9:01 - 9:03
    Again, that's actually,
  • 9:03 - 9:04
    I think, worth the money.
  • 9:04 - 9:07
I think that's worth the price that it goes for.
  • 9:07 - 9:08
    For $2,000,
  • 9:08 - 9:09
    it's a Pro level machine,
  • 9:09 - 9:11
people who are buying this machine
  • 9:11 - 9:12
    are usually buying it
  • 9:12 - 9:14
    for specific use cases,
  • 9:14 - 9:15
which are probably tied to their job
  • 9:15 - 9:16
or tied to them making money
  • 9:16 - 9:17
    in some way or another.
  • 9:17 - 9:20
So it really is incredible value, I think.
  • 9:20 - 9:21
    I think
  • 9:21 - 9:22
    if you're someone
  • 9:22 - 9:23
who does sort of any video editing,
  • 9:23 - 9:24
    AI work,
  • 9:25 - 9:27
photo editing or anything like that,
  • 9:27 - 9:28
this is the best value machine
  • 9:28 - 9:30
this is what this machine is perfect for.
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    I think the only reason
  • 9:33 - 9:35
you'd be going up to the M4 Max chips
  • 9:35 - 9:36
is if you're looking for very heavy stuff.
  • 9:36 - 9:38
    But I think
  • 9:38 - 9:40
people who are interested in those chips
  • 9:40 - 9:41
    already know what they need
  • 9:41 - 9:41
    and what they want.
  • 9:41 - 9:42
They already have a good idea
  • 9:42 - 9:44
of how capable the machines are.
  • 9:44 - 9:46
    They're simply just adding
    incremental things
  • 9:46 - 9:47
    that will make a difference
    to their workflow.
  • 9:47 - 9:49
The base model, M4 Pro chip
  • 9:49 - 9:51
    has the 12 core CPU
  • 9:51 - 9:52
    and the 16 core GPU,
  • 9:52 - 9:53
so it is a big jump up
  • 9:53 - 9:55
    from the standard M4,
  • 9:55 - 9:57
    which has a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU.
  • 9:58 - 9:59
    Yeah, the GPU cores, especially,
  • 9:59 - 10:00
    will make a big difference
  • 10:00 - 10:03
for any sort of just art-related stuff
  • 10:03 - 10:04
    and video-related stuff,
  • 10:04 - 10:05
it just makes a big difference.
  • 10:05 - 10:07
You also have the Media Engine and stuff.
  • 10:07 - 10:08
But I think they all have Media Engines now,
  • 10:08 - 10:09
as far as I can remember,
  • 10:09 - 10:10
I don't have it written down here.
  • 10:11 - 10:13
    The battery life, though,
is less compared to the M4
  • 10:13 - 10:15
    because it's M4 Pro,
  • 10:15 - 10:17
    it obviously uses more power,
  • 10:17 - 10:19
but it's around 2 hours less,
  • 10:19 - 10:20
    so 22 hours,
  • 10:20 - 10:21
    24 hours, 22 hours.
  • 10:21 - 10:23
22 hours is still a lot.
  • 10:24 - 10:26
    You're going to be fine
    throughout the day.
  • 10:26 - 10:27
    I think, though,
  • 10:28 - 10:30
    if you're someone
    who does heavy video editing,
  • 10:30 - 10:31
    from my experience,
  • 10:31 - 10:33
when I've been video editing on this,
  • 10:34 - 10:35
    on the M4 Pro
  • 10:35 - 10:35
    or the M4 Max,
  • 10:35 - 10:36
    any of those chips,
  • 10:36 - 10:39
it lasts around 4 to 6 hours.
  • 10:39 - 10:41
That's all I'm doing for those hours.
  • 10:41 - 10:43
So that can kill battery life
    very, very quickly.
  • 10:43 - 10:44
    But with these machines,
  • 10:44 - 10:47
    you do get the upgraded
    power supply as well,
  • 10:47 - 10:48
    the charger,
  • 10:48 - 10:49
    which charges the machines quicker
  • 10:49 - 10:51
than it does the Air models.
  • 10:51 - 10:52
    I think the Air models,
  • 10:52 - 10:55
you can choose between 35 or 60 watt.
  • 10:55 - 10:58
    But with these,
    I think they're like 70 and 96,
  • 10:58 - 10:59
    and even 140 watts
  • 10:59 - 11:01
    for the 16 inch models.
  • 11:02 - 11:03
    So yeah, you do have
    the upgraded power supplies,
  • 11:04 - 11:07
    which makes it easier
    to keep them topped up.
  • 11:07 - 11:08
    This is my personal favourite,
  • 11:08 - 11:11
    so my machine actually has
    the M4 Max chip.
  • 11:11 - 11:13
It also has upgraded unified memory,
  • 11:13 - 11:16
and it has upgraded storage up to 4 TB.
  • 11:16 - 11:19
So I paid a big premium for that 4 TB,
  • 11:19 - 11:21
even though it starts at a 512.
  • 11:21 - 11:22
I have a very specific use case.
  • 11:22 - 11:24
For my work and for everything I do,
  • 11:25 - 11:26
    this is worth the upgrade
  • 11:26 - 11:28
    because, basically,
  • 11:28 - 11:31
my work easily pays for it.
  • 11:31 - 11:33
It just easily, easily pays for it.
  • 11:33 - 11:35
This is just actually quite a small expense
  • 11:35 - 11:37
    considering how much
  • 11:37 - 11:38
work I can get done on it
  • 11:38 - 11:40
and how much it helps my business.
  • 11:40 - 11:42
I also much prefer the 14 inch size
  • 11:42 - 11:43
    over the 16 inch size
  • 11:43 - 11:45
because I travel quite a lot for work
  • 11:45 - 11:47
and I'm moving around a lot.
  • 11:47 - 11:48
I just prefer the smaller form factor
  • 11:48 - 11:49
    over the 16 inch.
  • 11:50 - 11:51
It just makes more sense for me.
  • 11:51 - 11:53
And I think this design as well,
  • 11:53 - 11:55
    it's pretty much perfect.
  • 11:55 - 11:56
    Obviously would be nice
    if it was thinner,
  • 11:56 - 11:57
    like the Air,
  • 11:57 - 11:59
    but then you're obviously
    not gonna get the thermal
  • 11:59 - 12:01
    output sort of capacity
  • 12:01 - 12:03
    and the better sort of
    battery performance.
  • 12:03 - 12:05
But this is an incredible machine.
  • 12:05 - 12:06
---- This is so, so good.
  • 12:06 - 12:07
And I've been very, very happy
  • 12:07 - 12:11
since I bought it in October, November,
  • 12:11 - 12:13
whenever the M4 line of chips
  • 12:13 - 12:14
    came into the MacBook Pros.
  • 12:14 - 12:16
Next up is a 16 inch.
  • 12:16 - 12:17
    So I don't have a 16 inch here,
  • 12:17 - 12:21
but the 16 inch MacBook Pro
    starts at $2,499.
  • 12:21 - 12:22
It has the M4 Pro chip,
  • 12:22 - 12:24
but it's actually an upgraded version
  • 12:24 - 12:26
of the one that's in the 14 inch Pro.
  • 12:26 - 12:28
So instead of a 12-core CPU,
  • 12:28 - 12:30
    you get a 14-core CPU,
  • 12:30 - 12:32
    and instead of 16-core GPU,
  • 12:32 - 12:33
    you get a 20-core GPU,
  • 12:33 - 12:35
    everything else stays the same.
  • 12:35 - 12:37
So you still get the 24 GB
    of Unified Memory,
  • 12:37 - 12:40
the 512 GB of SSD storage,
  • 12:40 - 12:42
the screen and everything is all the same,
  • 12:42 - 12:43
    but obviously it's just bigger.
  • 12:43 - 12:45
You get the 16 inch size.
  • 12:45 - 12:46
And 16 inches is big, guys,
  • 12:46 - 12:49
I've used a 16 inch and it is massive.
  • 12:49 - 12:51
It's much bigger than you expect.
  • 12:51 - 12:53
This already looks quite big, the 15 inch,
  • 12:53 - 12:55
    and then the 16 inches
is obviously a whole inch bigger,
  • 12:55 - 12:57
so it definitely makes a big difference.
  • 12:58 - 12:59
If you're someone who does work
  • 12:59 - 13:00
    a lot on the go
  • 13:00 - 13:01
    and you don't have access
  • 13:01 - 13:02
    to an external display
  • 13:02 - 13:03
    on a regular basis,
  • 13:03 - 13:05
I do think the 16 inch
  • 13:05 - 13:06
    just makes the most sense.
  • 13:06 - 13:07
    Also, if you're someone
  • 13:07 - 13:09
who's doing a lot of heavy
  • 13:09 - 13:11
    sort of graphic intensive,
  • 13:11 - 13:12
    CPU intensive work,
  • 13:12 - 13:13
and you need to upgrade the chip
  • 13:13 - 13:16
to the M4 Max or whatever it might be,
  • 13:16 - 13:18
Yeah, it just makes a big difference.
  • 13:18 - 13:19
I think that machine is obviously
  • 13:19 - 13:20
the top dog for a reason,
  • 13:20 - 13:23
    but you are paying
top dollar for it as well.
  • 13:23 - 13:24
The other benefit of that machine
  • 13:24 - 13:25
    because it's bigger,
  • 13:25 - 13:26
you also have a bigger battery,
  • 13:26 - 13:28
so the battery does last longer
  • 13:28 - 13:30
and you also get the 140 watt charger,
  • 13:30 - 13:31
so you can charge it more quickly.
  • 13:31 - 13:33
The 16 inch is definitely much more
  • 13:33 - 13:34
    just targeted towards the pros.
  • 13:34 - 13:35
For the price that you're paying,
  • 13:35 - 13:37
    everything that you get
    with that machine,
  • 13:37 - 13:38
    I think most people
  • 13:38 - 13:39
who are probably interested in the 16 inch
  • 13:39 - 13:40
probably aren't even watching this video.
  • 13:40 - 13:41
    They know a lot more
  • 13:41 - 13:43
    the sort of technical output
    of that machine.
  • 13:43 - 13:44
    But I think for people
  • 13:44 - 13:45
    who are watching this video,
  • 13:45 - 13:46
    you're probably more interested
  • 13:46 - 13:48
in sort of the Airs and the Pros.
  • 13:48 - 13:49
The sort of base model Pros,
  • 13:49 - 13:50
    and comparing them
  • 13:50 - 13:52
and seeing what makes sense for you.
  • 13:52 - 13:54
By the way, for anyone interested
  • 13:54 - 13:55
in the difference between Space Black,
  • 13:55 - 13:57
    Space Gray, and Silver,
  • 13:57 - 13:58
I have all three colours here.
  • 13:58 - 14:01
    So we have Space Black,
    Space Gray, and Silver.
  • 14:02 - 14:05
I am, of course, biased towards Space Black.
  • 14:06 - 14:08
I just think it looks incredible.
  • 14:08 - 14:09
    But here,
  • 14:09 - 14:11
I feel like they almost look very similar,
  • 14:11 - 14:12
the Space Gray and the Space Black,
  • 14:12 - 14:13
    but in person,
  • 14:13 - 14:15
the Space Black is definitely darker.
  • 14:16 - 14:18
It's hard to show on camera really.
  • 14:19 - 14:21
Maybe at this angle you guys can see.
  • 14:21 - 14:23
Depending on the light on the machine,
  • 14:24 - 14:25
you can see how much it changes.
  • 14:25 - 14:27
    And then there's the Silver.
  • 14:27 - 14:28
    I actually like the Silver
    more than I expected.
  • 14:28 - 14:30
I think it looks really clean.
  • 14:30 - 14:31
    Like I said earlier,
  • 14:31 - 14:32
    if you're going to get
    any of these machines,
  • 14:32 - 14:34
    think very hard about
  • 14:34 - 14:35
    if you need to upgrade
    the Unified Memory
  • 14:35 - 14:36
    and the storage.
  • 14:37 - 14:38
I think the Unified Memory right now
  • 14:38 - 14:40
across all the machines is pretty good.
  • 14:40 - 14:41
    16 GB on the Airs
  • 14:41 - 14:44
is more than enough for most people.
  • 14:44 - 14:45
    I think, like I said,
  • 14:45 - 14:47
    for the edge cases,
  • 14:47 - 14:49
like the 10, 20% edge cases,
  • 14:49 - 14:50
    you might need to upgrade
  • 14:50 - 14:51
    to the other machines,
  • 14:51 - 14:53
but you've gotta really think about it.
  • 14:53 - 14:55
A lot of people who are
    also buying these machines
  • 14:55 - 14:57
want them to last a long time.
  • 14:57 - 14:59
So, say you want to buy a MacBook
  • 14:59 - 15:01
that lasts around five years or more.
  • 15:01 - 15:02
Let's just say five years or more.
  • 15:03 - 15:04
    I think all of them
  • 15:04 - 15:05
    are actually a good choice,
  • 15:05 - 15:06
    which is insane to say.
  • 15:06 - 15:09
Any MacBook that you choose in the line-up,
  • 15:09 - 15:09
    any of the base models,
  • 15:09 - 15:13
are all going to last five years or more.
  • 15:13 - 15:15
    I've had personal MacBook Airs,
    older ones,
  • 15:15 - 15:18
last ten years, which is just outrageous.
  • 15:18 - 15:19
I've had to change the battery
  • 15:19 - 15:21
because the batteries have sort of died,
  • 15:21 - 15:22
but it's easy to change the battery.
  • 15:22 - 15:25
MacBooks are designed to last a long time.
  • 15:25 - 15:27
So don't worry too much about, you know,
  • 15:27 - 15:29
is it gonna to feel old in a year or two?
  • 15:29 - 15:29
    It will not.
  • 15:29 - 15:31
    I think these machines
  • 15:31 - 15:32
    are going to last
  • 15:32 - 15:34
four, five, six years quite easily.
  • 15:34 - 15:35
I would also think about these machines
  • 15:35 - 15:36
    as an investment.
  • 15:36 - 15:38
So I've written down a few things here.
  • 15:38 - 15:40
How much time will it help you save.
  • 15:40 - 15:42
    Are there any current
    frustrations that you have
  • 15:42 - 15:43
    with your current laptop
  • 15:43 - 15:44
    that it might solve?
  • 15:45 - 15:46
Will it help you make money
  • 15:46 - 15:47
or get your job done quicker?
  • 15:47 - 15:49
I think that one is a very important one,
  • 15:49 - 15:51
    because if a machine
is gonna help you make money,
  • 15:51 - 15:52
or get your job done quicker,
  • 15:52 - 15:53
then surely it's worth the investment.
  • 15:53 - 15:55
How much will you use it every day
  • 15:55 - 15:57
and what are you going to use it for?
  • 15:57 - 15:57
    So very much,
  • 15:57 - 15:59
do think about these as investments.
  • 15:59 - 16:00
Don't think of them as toys.
  • 16:00 - 16:01
I think a lot of people think,
  • 16:01 - 16:03
"Oh, MacBook, it's just a fancy toy, whatever."
  • 16:03 - 16:03
    No, no, no, no.
  • 16:03 - 16:06
I think especially the Pro models,
  • 16:06 - 16:07
    think of them as investments.
  • 16:07 - 16:08
    Think of them as
  • 16:08 - 16:09
how are they gonna help you
    day-to-day,
  • 16:09 - 16:10
    how they're gonna help you
  • 16:10 - 16:11
with your work, with your job,
  • 16:11 - 16:13
with making money, all this sort of stuff.
  • 16:13 - 16:15
The reason why I'm happy to spend
  • 16:15 - 16:16
    $3,000, $4,000, $5,000
  • 16:16 - 16:17
    on a MacBook
  • 16:17 - 16:19
for myself is because I know for my work
  • 16:19 - 16:20
    and for what I do
  • 16:20 - 16:22
    that is well worth it.
  • 16:22 - 16:23
That's actually a very small cost
  • 16:23 - 16:24
in the grand scheme of things,
  • 16:24 - 16:25
    of how much I make.
  • 16:26 - 16:28
It's just a very small investment,
  • 16:28 - 16:29
but it's such a good investment.
  • 16:29 - 16:31
So very much do think of it like that.
  • 16:31 - 16:33
    Also, something
    I would highly recommend,
  • 16:33 - 16:35
    if you don't care about
    getting the latest or greatest,
  • 16:35 - 16:36
    look at the older models.
  • 16:36 - 16:39
Look at an M2 chip or an M3 chip,
  • 16:39 - 16:40
    especially the Pro machines
  • 16:40 - 16:42
    and the Max machines.
  • 16:42 - 16:44
Those machines are still amazing right now.
  • 16:44 - 16:47
    This machine in particular here
    is actually the M1 Max
  • 16:47 - 16:50
and it is still ridiculously powerful,
  • 16:50 - 16:53
    it still handles pretty much
    everything I throw at it.
  • 16:53 - 16:55
I've upgraded to the M4 Max specifically
  • 16:55 - 16:56
    just for like the storage,
  • 16:56 - 16:57
    the Unified Memory.
  • 16:57 - 17:00
But when you look at the older models,
  • 17:00 - 17:01
    with those chips in them,
  • 17:01 - 17:02
    they're also still gonna
  • 17:02 - 17:04
last three, four or five years.
  • 17:04 - 17:05
    They're so, so powerful.
  • 17:05 - 17:06
And you can save a lot of money
  • 17:06 - 17:08
by going for one of those models.
  • 17:08 - 17:10
Whether it be on Apple's refurbished section,
  • 17:10 - 17:11
they do have a refurbished section
  • 17:11 - 17:12
    on the website
  • 17:12 - 17:14
    which actually updates daily.
  • 17:14 - 17:15
So when you see products on there
  • 17:15 - 17:16
    you gotta be quick,
  • 17:16 - 17:17
    they go quite quickly,
  • 17:17 - 17:20
    But obviously you can look
    on Amazon, eBay,
  • 17:20 - 17:23
    for renewed or refurbished models,
    for older models
  • 17:23 - 17:24
    because they're usually going
  • 17:24 - 17:25
    for quite a heavy discount.
  • 17:25 - 17:27
And if you wanna save some money
  • 17:27 - 17:28
    and you don't care about
    getting the latest or greatest,
  • 17:29 - 17:31
that is such a good way
to save a lot of money.
  • 17:31 - 17:32
So just to quickly wrap up,
  • 17:32 - 17:34
    if you're someone
    who's doing standard work,
  • 17:34 - 17:37
    Word processing, Excel stuff,
  • 17:37 - 17:38
    and you just need maybe
    the odd sort of
  • 17:38 - 17:40
    video editing or photo editing,
  • 17:40 - 17:41
    the Airs are great value.
  • 17:41 - 17:43
    These machines are fantastic.
  • 17:43 - 17:46
    If you're someone who's looking
    for a Pro level machine,
  • 17:46 - 17:48
I think you already know the answer.
  • 17:48 - 17:50
    If you're someone
who's doing very heavy video editing,
  • 17:50 - 17:52
    AI work, photo editing,
  • 17:52 - 17:53
    whatever it might be,
  • 17:53 - 17:54
then yeah, the Pros obviously make sense.
  • 17:55 - 17:58
    Right now, I don't think
any of the machines are bad value.
  • 17:58 - 17:59
    They're all really good value.
  • 17:59 - 18:00
    And, you know,
  • 18:00 - 18:01
if you don't even need a MacBook,
  • 18:01 - 18:02
you still have the Mac Mini.
  • 18:02 - 18:03
And you can connect this up
  • 18:03 - 18:04
to like a display or whatever.
  • 18:04 - 18:05
And you still have great value here.
  • 18:06 - 18:08
It's just really impressive to me
  • 18:08 - 18:09
that Apple are now at the stage
  • 18:09 - 18:11
    where all of their machines
  • 18:11 - 18:12
    are pretty much good value.
  • 18:12 - 18:13
    Upgrading them,
  • 18:13 - 18:14
    maybe it's a great value,
  • 18:14 - 18:16
    but the machines themselves,
  • 18:16 - 18:17
    the base models,
  • 18:17 - 18:18
    they're all really great machines.
  • 18:18 - 18:20
    Make sure to check out
    one of my other videos.
  • 18:20 - 18:23
I've done videos on the best
Mac displays for Macs right now.
  • 18:23 - 18:25
    If you wanna connect it
    to an external display,
  • 18:25 - 18:26
I've also done a Mac accessories video.
  • 18:26 - 18:28
    Hopefully, you guys enjoyed it.
