Interview with Tulsi Gabbard

  • 0:02 - 0:04
the reason why we greet each other with
  • 0:04 - 0:07
Aloha is because of the real powerful
  • 0:07 - 0:09
meaning of this word that really
  • 0:09 - 0:13
expresses I come to you with respect and
  • 0:13 - 0:17
with an open heart and with love and a
  • 0:17 - 0:21
recognition that no matter where we come
  • 0:21 - 0:25
from or the color of our skin or you
  • 0:25 - 0:28
know how we work or if we worship or how
  • 0:28 - 0:31
we were all of these things it cuts
  • 0:31 - 0:34
right through and recognizes that we're
  • 0:34 - 0:35
all connected we're all brothers and
  • 0:35 - 0:37
sisters all children of God and
  • 0:37 - 0:40
therefore are inspired to treat each
  • 0:40 - 0:43
other with that most deep respect and
  • 0:43 - 0:47
care that inspires us to take action to
  • 0:47 - 0:50
take action to care for one another
  • 0:52 - 0:55
I get asked about the gray that I have
  • 0:55 - 0:58
in my hair here and it
  • 0:58 - 1:01
I started started to go gray during my
  • 1:01 - 1:04
my first deployment and just over the
  • 1:04 - 1:07
years have decided to keep that because
  • 1:07 - 1:11
of the reminder that it brings to me of
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    [Music]
  • 1:13 - 1:17
those who pay the price for war the cost
  • 1:17 - 1:21
    before you'll never forget
  • 1:22 - 1:27
I I think that I think that is most
  • 1:27 - 1:32
important to make sure that we have the
  • 1:32 - 1:34
right the right people with the right
  • 1:34 - 1:38
    qualifications motivated purely by that
  • 1:38 - 1:41
love and care and compassion for others
  • 1:41 - 1:44
in positions of power because ultimately
  • 1:44 - 1:47
when it comes down to it whether you
  • 1:47 - 1:50
have men or women in positions of great
  • 1:50 - 1:51
power and influence if they're driven by
  • 1:51 - 1:56
that hunger for power and desire to hold
  • 1:56 - 1:58
on to it that's where we end up in a
  • 1:58 - 2:03
    very very bad place
  • 2:05 - 2:08
the VA is an organization that has a
  • 2:08 - 2:11
mission to protect and to serve the
  • 2:11 - 2:14
needs of our veterans those who go and
  • 2:14 - 2:16
are willing to sacrifice all for our
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    country and unfortunately what we're
  • 2:18 - 2:20
seeing is that even after all of these
  • 2:20 - 2:24
years both in the post 9/11 era of
  • 2:24 - 2:27
veterans but also with Vietnam veterans
  • 2:27 - 2:29
Korean War veterans those who have come
  • 2:29 - 2:31
before us the the services are still
  • 2:31 - 2:34
falling short and this area of
  • 2:34 - 2:35
post-traumatic stress I think is one of
  • 2:35 - 2:38
the main areas where that's true there
  • 2:38 - 2:41
continues to be a stigma around this
  • 2:41 - 2:43
whether people are willing to admit it
  • 2:43 - 2:45
or not both within the military and also
  • 2:45 - 2:48
as people of transition back to their
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    civilian lives I've experienced it
  • 2:50 - 2:53
through some of my friends who I've
  • 2:53 - 2:54
served with who've come home really
  • 2:54 - 2:58
really struggling and having a hard time
  • 2:58 - 3:01
finding the best place that can that can
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    really help them
  • 3:06 - 3:08
this is one of the drivers behind the
  • 3:08 - 3:11
the continued rate of veteran suicide
  • 3:11 - 3:14
that we're seeing in our country and
  • 3:14 - 3:17
shows that we have to take a more
  • 3:17 - 3:19
holistic approach and this is what I
  • 3:19 - 3:21
would lead as president where as a
  • 3:21 - 3:24
veteran I understand in a deeply
  • 3:24 - 3:26
personal way who pays the price for war
  • 3:26 - 3:29
and how heavy that price is and will
  • 3:29 - 3:32
ensure that our VA leaves no veteran
  • 3:32 - 3:34
behind that every single veteran gets
  • 3:34 - 3:36
the care that they need and as we look
  • 3:36 - 3:39
at post-traumatic stress there are many
  • 3:39 - 3:42
different levels of how it impacts
  • 3:42 - 3:45
people on a whole spectrum some very
  • 3:45 - 3:48
very extreme situation some may be less
  • 3:48 - 3:51
extreme but every person heals and finds
  • 3:51 - 3:55
their therapy and and their path forward
  • 3:55 - 3:58
in a different way and as a VA as a
  • 3:58 - 4:00
government as a society we need to be
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    able to help support that
  • 4:04 - 4:06
we're still working on putting together
  • 4:06 - 4:09
kind of on paper in each of these areas
  • 4:09 - 4:12
what my vision for the kinds of changes
  • 4:12 - 4:14
that we'd need to see as a presidential
  • 4:14 - 4:17
platform these are issues that I've been
  • 4:17 - 4:20
closely involved with and working on
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    with legislation in Congress both
  • 4:23 - 4:25
co-sponsoring bills like the aim high
  • 4:25 - 4:30
act and others and bringing voice to you
  • 4:30 - 4:32
know those who are my constituents and
  • 4:32 - 4:35
others in the country who are still not
  • 4:35 - 4:38
being represented you know at the table
  • 4:38 - 4:40
where a lot of these decisions are being
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    made
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    you
