Input & output tables: finding the output | 4th grade math (TX TEKS) | Khan Academy

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    - [Instructor] We are told Maria is older
  • 0:02 - 0:03
    than her brother Manny.
  • 0:03 - 0:06
    The table shows Manny's
    age and Maria's age.
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    This table's right over here.
  • 0:07 - 0:11
How can we find Maria's age
when Manny is 12 years old?
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    So essentially, when Manny
is 12, how old is Maria?
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    So pause this video.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
Have a go at that before
    we do it together.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
    Okay, so we see that
    when Manny's 3 years old,
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    Maria is 8 years old,
  • 0:24 - 0:26
or another way to think about it is
  • 0:26 - 0:29
Maria is 5 years older than Manny.
  • 0:29 - 0:30
You take Manny's age as an input.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
Add 5 to it. You get Maria's age.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
Let's see if that holds up,
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    and it should because if
    someone's 5 years older,
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    people don't change.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    They're going to continue
    to be 5 years older
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    as they age together,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
and we see that 6 plus 5 is 11.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    9 plus 5 is 14,
  • 0:46 - 0:48
so Maria's age when Manny is 12.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
We're just going to add 5 to that.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
    12 plus 5 is 17 years old.
